Hill Country Galleria October Events & Happenings

(Continued on Page 4)

SATURDAY NIGHT CONCERT SERIESSaturdays, October 6, 13, 20, 27 starting at 7 p.m.

Hill Country Galleria is hosting their signature Saturday Night Concert Series every Saturday in October and continuing into November with music starting at 7 p.m. in the Central Plaza. Guests can sit back, relax and enjoy this free event with family and friends. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs to lounge on the grassy lawn during the show and arrive early to shop and dine at Hill Country Galleria retailers and even get their meal delivered straight to the Central Plaza. October LineupOctober 6 - Marshall Hood

Marshall Hood, the youngest in the Hood family of talented musicians, crafts charming songs with subtly catchy melodies.

October 13 - Edison ChairAustin born and raised, Edison Chair, combines ‘60’s

instrumentation with modern pop vocal sensibilities. This unique fusion of vintage warmth and cutting female-led edginess ensures killer lives shows and enthralling recorded tracks.

October 20 - Barbara NesbittBarbara Nesbitt, a Georgia native, has found her home in music.

Her life is reflected in the songs she writes which are about the ways, large and small, people abandon and seek that elusive safety of home.

October 27 - Charlie Faye and The FayettesCharlie Faye & The Fayettes are bringing back the 60s girl group.

Their well-crafted songs could easily be mistaken for those performed by the Ronettes, Shirelles, or Supremes -- but they've put a modern twist on that classic soul-pop sound. Their debut record, produced by Dave Way (Macy Gray, Fiona Apple, Ben Folds) is due out in early 2016. With their original, hooky songs, stylish retro vibe, and one hell of a backing band, the Fayettes are poised to rise to the top of the quickly-growing "retro" genre.

Public Library. With live music, restaurants, shops, and a multi-screen theater, it’s a day-long family event. To date, more than $54,000 has been raised for the library though sponsorships, registrations, and outright donations. All the money goes to the Friends of Bee Cave Public Library, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to supporting and promoting the Bee Cave library.

Each year, Highland Lakes SPCA works to find forever homes for hundreds of dogs abandoned to the streets or on “death row” at municipal county facilities in Burnet, Llano, Blanco and Travis counties. Since its founding in 1999 HLSPCA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has rescued, rehabilitated and found forever home for more than 1,700 dogs! And their work continues around the clock to staff and maintain their 24x7 kennel operation. HLSPCA relies 100% on the contributions of individual donors, small grants and business partners like you. This year their annual charity golf tournament fundraiser, Putts4Pups, will be held on Sunday, October 21st at Barton Creek Lakeside: shotgun start at 12:30pm, lunch, golf cart, dinner, raffles, prizes and live music included, all in the celebration of canine rescue. The proceeds from this wonderful event directly go to the expenses of caring for the dogs until they are matched with the right families. To join the fun and find more into on Putts4Pups, visit hlspca.org.

Ladies of Charity-Lake Travis Take First Step Towards Forever HomeThe Ladies of Charity-Lake Travis (“LOC-LT”) have taken the

first step towards building their “Forever Home” by purchasing property in the Lakeway Medical Village area. The property is on the corner of RR620 S. and Spillman Loop. Building plans have been submitted to the City of Lakeway Planning Committee for approval to start building, hopefully within the next couple of months.

The new location will feature a much larger sales and sorting space which translates to more great bargains. Our volunteers can’t wait for the extra work space. The best news is that our operating costs will be less, allowing us to support even more local charities.

LOC-LT is very appreciative of the community support they’ve been shown through this first step. Over this last year our donations have increased and we have gained new customers, many of whom donate to our building fund. Our volunteer staff is growing as well and we can always use more. We owe thanks to many of our volunteers for not only their time, but their financial support. Several community organizations have also generously supported our efforts. A special thank you to Austin Christian Fellowship, Emmaus Catholic Church, Lake Travis Rotary Club and Ladies of Charity-Austin. Watch for more updates!

District Earns an ‘A’ in 2018 State Accountability Rating System

(The following is on behalf of Dr. Brad Lancaster, LTISD Superintendent of Schools.)

Dear Lake Travis ISD Parents and Guardians,I hope that you and your family have had a great start to the new

school year. It is only the third day of the new year and I already have some exciting news to share. I am pleased to inform you that the Lake Travis Independent School District has earned an ‘A’ rating (94) under the state’s 2018 accountability system.

According to the Texas Education Agency, a district’s letter and numeric grade are based on performance in three areas:• Student Achievement - measures what students know and can do

by the end of the year. It includes results from state assessments across all subjects for all students, on both general and alternate assessments, College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) indicators, like AP and SAT/ACT results, and graduation rates.

• School Progress - measures how much better students are doing on the STAAR test this year versus last year, and how much better students are doing academically relative to schools with similar percentages of economically disadvantaged students.

• Closing the Gaps - looks at performance among student groups, including various racial/ethnic groups, socioeconomic backgrounds and other factors.

While district ratings are based on an A–F scale, the 2018 rating labels for individual campuses continued under the Met Standard, Met Alternative Standard or Improvement Required labels. I am also happy to report that each of our campuses ‘Met Standard’ under the 2018 accountability rating system. The A–F rating labels will be applied to all campuses with the 2019 accountability ratings. As your superintendent, I am very proud of our district’s ‘A’ rating. It is reflective of the dedication and hard work of our teachers and support staff. However, while I am in full support of accountability, the current rating system is limited in scope and is not a complete measure of our exceptionally high academic and extracurricular performance districtwide. There is a great deal more to our district than what can be encapsulated in a single letter grade that is to reflect an entire academic year. Regardless, you too should be proud of our district’s rating, and I ask that you help us share the good news throughout our exemplary community.

You are encouraged to visit TXschools.org to view online report cards designed to be useful tools in seeing how our schools or school district is performing in different areas. The report cards spotlight specific strengths, in addition to any challenges, that can assure the needs of all students are being met. You can search by district or school name and compare that district’s or school’s performance to others in their area.

On behalf of our school school, I wish you and your family a wonderful school year!

Sincerely,Brad Lancaster, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools

Mom, GMA Meteorologist and Dancing with the Star’s GINGER ZEE Takes the Stage for Hand to Hold’s Annual Baby Shower on Nov. 2

Honorary Chair C a m i l a A l v e s M c C o n a u g h e y to co -ho s t Fi f th Annual Baby Shower Luncheon, helping Hand to Hold care for families of premature and medically fragile infants

A beloved tradition for growing families, baby showers are c e l e b r a t i o n s t o welcome new life. Yet when one out of eight Austin babies arrive too soon, families’ dreams are replaced

with painful realities: life in the hospital, continual anxiety, debilitating fears of loss and death, and the stress of life-or-death medical decisions. That’s why Austin-born nonprofit Hand to Hold is leading the way to help families get the support and best care when their fragile babies are born too soon.

Hand to Hold welcomes GINGER ZEE, a writer, dancer and Good Morning America Chief Meteorologist, as she headlines its fifth annual Baby Shower – Seasons of Life: Gathering Strength from the Storm in the Grand Ballroom of the JW Marriott in downtown Austin on Friday, November 2, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Hand to Hold Baby Shower raises funds to provide support and programs for families in Central Texas and beyond. Hand to Hold’s resources and programs for families provide Peer Support, Psychological & Emotional Support, Whole Family Care and NICU & Beyond programs.

Two leading causes of disability or death among newborns are premature birth and birth defects. Premature birth – a baby born before 37 weeks of gestation -- affects 54 families each week in the Greater Austin Area - Travis, Williamson, Bastrop, Hays and Caldwell Counties (Texas Department of State Health Services, 2012.). Other babies may be referred to the NICU because of a defect or other health concern -- five percent (5%) of all Texas babies are born with one or more birth defects (Texas Birth Defects Registry, 2011).

ZEE will inspire guests with her message of resilience and self-care, leaving attendees feeling renewed, empowered, and intensely

moved by her raw, poignant chronicle of life as a Natural Disaster.

“When babies need intensive care and an extended hospital stay, we are right there with parents and families to make sure their emotional needs are met, too,” says Kelli Kelley, Austin resident and co-founder and executive director of Hand to Hold. “When hospital care centers on the whole family, their babies also do better. We help parents cope with in person support, podcasts and online information so that they have hope, courage and wisdom to parent their medically fragile child.”

Baby Shower guests represent many families who have experienced life with a baby in neonatal intensive care and also, infant loss. With luxury prizes from jewelry and spa treatments to fine dining, Hand to Hold’s fanciful Baby Shower games will delight and surprise guests – some of whom didn’t have their own baby showers due to premature birth or loss -- as they gather to raise support NICU families and also honor their own birth and parenting experiences.

Seasons of Life: Gathering Strength from the Storm is hosted by neonatal ICU Parent Graduates Heather Nichols and Beth Cohen, Co-Chairs with Honorary Chair Camila Alves McConaughey; Hand to Hold Founder and Executive Director Kelli Kelley; and a committee of 25 Central Texas volunteers.

Guest speaker GINGER ZEE is an Emmy Award-winning chief meteorologist at ABC News and the face of our nation’s weather headlines on Good Morning America and across all ABC News broadcasts and digital platforms. She is also the New York Times bestselling author of Natural Disaster: I Cover Them; I Am One. Since joining ABC News, Zee has covered almost every major weather event and dozens of historic storms. A mother of two, Zee lives in New York City with her husband.

Tickets for the Fifth Annual Baby Shower Luncheon are available at www.handtohold.org/babyshower.

Hand to Hold is a national nonprofit that helps families before, during, and after NICU stays and infant loss by providing powerful resources for the whole family, and most importantly, one-on-one mentoring from someone who has been there. Hand to Hold resources include in-hospital programs, articles and blogs, social networks, trained peer mentors, and its popular podcast, NICU Now. All were designed with the emotional, physical, and social needs of the whole NICU family. Hand to Hold was the 2012 recipient of the Becky Hatfield Family Support Award, given by the National Perinatal Association. In 2015, Hand to Hold was ranked as one of the top 10 resources for NICU parents by About.com. All services are offered without charge.

LTlov Prepares Students for Success! Having the required school supplies is critical to success for all

students, but not all families are able to afford this expense. For the eighth year running, LTlov communicated a call for help on behalf of these families and our community responded with generous donations of the materials necessary to the learning process.

Project Supply Pack, part of LTlov’s School Supplies Program, delivered prepackaged campus and grade specific school supplies directly to 275 LTISD students from 175 families, coded Economically Disadvantaged, on their desks at campus Back to School Night events. Following the application deadline for campus-assigned supply packs, LTlov’s School Supplies Program committee set to work with the goal of providing ALL financially limited students with the supplies needed including late applications, backpacks, basic supplies for Lake Travis High School students who do not participate in the pre-packaged ordering system, supplies for the Cav Lounge and supplies for teacher’s closets at HBMS and LTES. Community donations of requested school supplies, cash and gift cards made this goal attainable and all students who requested assistance received the help they needed.

LTlov is extremely grateful to the Schoen Foundation which provided a $15,000 grant to Project Supply Pack, as well as LTISD, the Lake Travis Crisis Ministries and PODER who promoted

awareness of the Project Supply Pack Application and deadline. The list of businesses, organizations and individuals who supported this year’s School Supplies Collection drive is extensive. The Pedernales Fire Department hosted 2 special events which resulted in many bags of school supplies and presented LTlov with a $400 cash donation, Coldwell Bankers United Realtors in Lakeway and the Sonesta Hotel each collected a large box of supplies, Austin Ridge Church provided 40 filled high school backpacks, HEB donated 40 backpacks and Tuscany Village provided 12 filled backpacks. Huge thanks go to the Lakeway Veterinary Clinic, Strandz Salon, the Lake Travis Community Library, Kuper Sotheby’s, Nitro Swimming, World of Tennis, Elite Wellness, Flipnastics, Champions TX and Hill Country Indoor who hosted collection bins. The consistent generosity of Lake Travis residents resulted in 17 bins full of supplies and just under $5,000 in cash donations. Special thanks go to the many volunteers who sorted, packed and distributed supplies including the Lake Travis Young Men’s Service League and the LTHS National Honor Society, the Lake Travis School District for providing a room at the LTHS Annex to receive, sort and distribute supplies, and to all the volunteers who dedicated over 150 hours to this much-needed program. In total, LTlov was honored to provide over 350 students from all LTISD campuses with the supplies required for success in the classroom.
