Executive Administrator’s Corner

The chips are down. Bad news just happened. Your life just took a turn for the worst. Despair

just waltzed in the door. You ask your bewildered self, “What am I going to do?”

Sink or swim moments are part of our lives. We despise them, yet none of us are immune from them. They come from any direction, always threatening things that are highly important to us including our life, relationships, possessions or even our faith. Some feel as if they are being tested by God.

There is no doubt sink or swim moments can test us to the core. Yet, no matter what you are faced with, there is something really special about you, about humans. We have an incredible capacity to bounce back! It’s a part of our DNA the Human Genome Project could not discover. It is your spirit.

There’s just something about the human spirit that pushes us to bounce back. No matter the problem or how dire the circumstance, we strive to thrive. If it is something requiring more than we have in us, we lean on faith and hope to survive.

When you have nothing left to give, it is faith and hope that gives you inner peace. If you have peace, nothing else matters. Peace gives you the resolve to know that no matter what happens, you are going to be okay.

There are other wonderful things stirred up in you when you are bouncing back. Grit shows up and allows you to muster up the courage to keep putting your best foot forward. Resilience and fortitude help you use every ounce of integrity you have without giving up any. Resolve is reflected in your eyes.

Sometimes getting through a difficult time means swallowing your pride. It tastes worse than castor oil but can have wonderful results. To be honest with yourself (about yourself) is like opening an invitation to wisdom. To admit you are not in control of the circumstances can be an initiation to healing.

Challenging times have a way of reshaping you, making you better. When you have done everything you can and all that is left is to stand tall and hope for a miracle, stand firm.

I have seen lots of courageous men and women face life’s difficulties with the boldest countenance. It is a life-changing moment to watch them be positive during even the darkest of moments. Through it all, they convey to us the message of an old hymn: It is well, it is well with my soul.

Keep bouncing back!Sincerely, Don

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Page 6: Volume No. 211 / May 2017 - Spanish Cove Retirement Village · When you have nothing left to give, it is faith and hope that gives you inner peace. If you have peace, nothing else

Welcome New ResidentsMARY FOURKILLER

Mary Fourkiller was born in Fairfax, Oregon. Her family moved to Oklahoma City where she attended grade school through high school.

She graduated from Central High. Mary worked mostly in the life insurance business and retired in 1996 from New York Life Insurance Company. She worked 29 years and was Assistant Office Manager for the last 20 years of that time.

Mary married her husband, Sam in 1958. He worked for AT&T and retired after 28 years. They lived in the Westbury Addition and both played lots of golf. Sam passed away in 2007. They have one daughter, Cindy

Higgins and her husband, James, who live in Cache, Oklahoma and have three sons, Jake, Josh and Sam. Larry is their son who is married to Brenda. They have two daughters, Shawnda and Alyssa, who, between the two of them have four children.

Mary is such a delight and we are looking forward to her becoming part of the Cove family. Welcome to Spanish Cove, Mary!

JOE AND PAT HAMMAN

Leland “Joe” Hamman was born in 1938 in Enid, Oklahoma, raised and graduated from high school in Pond Creek. He received a BA from Northwestern

Oklahoma State College and an MS in History from Fort Hays State in Hays, Kansas. Joe served in the Army from 1962 to 1965 and wrote for the battalion newspaper while stationed in Berlin, Germany. Shortly after returning home he met and married Patricia Baldwin, a nursing student at the time, from Fairview, Oklahoma.

Patricia Sue Baldwin was born in Enid, Oklahoma in 1942. As an only child, she grew up on a farm southwest of Fairview, graduated from Fairview HS, attended OSU, Phillips University, Northwestern OK State and graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing.

After Joe and Pat married they moved to Fowler, Kansas in 1966 where they raised their daughter Stephanie and son Colin. Stephanie is a preschool teacher and lives with her husband and four children in south Oklahoma City. Colin works for Sandia Labs and lives with his wife and seven children in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Joe taught social studies, history, speech & debate in Kansas and Oklahoma for many years. In 1990 they moved back to Oklahoma and have spent the last twenty-three years in Stillwater. Pat spent the last seventeen years of her forty-two year nursing career at Stillwater Medical Center.

Joe’s hobbies include reading and travel. Pat loves to travel, read and do needlework, but she dislikes cooking. The Hamman’s have been to all fifty states and to fifteen other countries. They are members of the Stillwater Catholic Community and have loved the college atmosphere but now feel the need to downsize, simplify and live closer to their daughter. They dislike the ‘big city” atmosphere and they feel Yukon will be a good choice. Welcome to Spanish Cove, Joe & Pat!

Life The Way You Want It

When you hear the words “high-intensity interval training” you may think that’s just for athletes, but many studies have shown that it’s for everyone – including older

adults. What is high-intensity interval training, or H.I.I.T.? H.I.I.T. is an exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less-intense recovery periods. This may sound intimidating, but remember that intensity is relative to the individual so what’s “high-intensity” for a young person might not be the same rigor for an older adult or for someone with any type of medical condition. In fact, several studies have shown that H.I.I.T. is even a great form of exercise for cardiac rehabilitation patients.

There are many benefits from doing high-intensity interval training including protecting your heart from diseases like coronary heart disease, improving your body’s insulin sensitivity, creating new mitochondria cells (the ones that turn the food you eat into usable energy), and improving endurance, balance and posture. You can also improve lung capacity and build muscle without any weights since H.I.I.T. can be done with just your body weight. If those aren’t good enough reasons, H.I.I.T. can cut your workout time in half so that you get the same, if not better, results doing 15 minutes of H.I.I.T. as you would working out half an hour in the gym. H.I.I.T. has been shown to burn more calories and increase your metabolism better than regular exercise 24-hours after a workout. But, what’s the best way to do high-intensity interval training? While there’s no right way to do it (you set the pace yourself), there are some standard ways that have been shown to be an effective workout. Typically 30 seconds of “all out” work followed by a minute of rest or slow-paced work for a total of 20 minutes is all it takes. Examples of a H.I.I.T. cardio workout might be 30 seconds of vigorous walking or walking at a steep incline, followed by 30 seconds to a minute of “normal-paced” walking or less incline. Another form might be to do 1 minute of body weight exercises, such as chair stands and push-ups against a wall, and rest for 30 seconds. Again, you can use just your body weight, but adding weights can help give you more variety. Prevent the body from plateauing and becoming “used to” your workout routine by adding variety and always utilizing both cardiovascular endurance and muscular fitness.

May 1st always brings back memories of the maypole. Although I have never seen a live maypole dance, I can envision it clearly just from the stories my mother shared with me about her childhood. As she

described the colors and sounds, I would listen intently, fascinated by her descriptions. There are many things I have never physically experienced but because of the stories shared with

me—by my parents, aunts, uncles and even you, the residents—I feel like I have been right there. Oral literature is quickly becoming a thing of the past. We no longer sit and just talk with our

families. If your family is like mine, the grandkids’ eyes never leave their screens, even when they come in for a hug. The TV has usurped family-time traditions of sitting around after dinner telling stories and recounting past events.

There is so much to be learned from our elders and their past. I encouraged my mother to fill out a legacy book in which she recounted those wonderful stories so I could pass them down to my children. I didn’t want to forget one single thing.

In Plaza Concourse, we have a world map titled, “Oh the Places You Have Been.” I love listening to your tales of trips to far-away locales. Each time I think, there is such a wonderful story there. I hope they have written it down for their grandchildren. Have you?

Start today by writing the stories you remember about your birth and childhood. They will become irreplaceable treasures to your grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren, and even more to come. And don’t worry, no one’s story is boring. If you don’t believe me, just sit outside the library in the afternoons and you will hear some of the most fascinating stories around.

My May Day story that I share with my own children is not as colorful as my mother’s, but I do tell them about how we would pick the neighbor’s flowers and make bouquets. Then, we would hang them on the other neighbors’ doors, ring the doorbell, and run. I wonder what my children will pass on to their children someday. I better start my own legacy book, so I can add my stories to the mix.

Happy May Day!Shelli Selby, LPC
