In Sweetwater, the city school board was named a “board of distinc tion.” A Monroe County Commission workshop reviewed the county’s 1,440 acres, where the parcels were, what they contained, and when they became taxpayers’ prop erty. Unemployment Nudging UpGreg Altum Ninety out of the 95counties in Tennessee hadan increase in unemploy-ment in November andMonroe County was oneof them, according to theTennessee Department ofLabor and Workforce De-velopment. The county’s rate wentfrom 3.2 percent in Octo-ber to 3.5 percent in No-vember. McMinn County’s job-less rate rose as well, goingfrom 3.6 percent to 4.0percent. Loudon County ‘s rateincreased from 3.0 per-cent to 3.3 percent. Blount County’s liftedfrom 2.7 percent to 3.1 per-

cent. The state’s overall rateclimbed from 3.0 percentto 3.3 percent. The national unem-ployment rate was stable,holding steady at 3.9 per-cent. Greene and Weakleycounties had decreases injoblessness and the ratesof three others remainedthe same. Williamson County(Franklin) and DavidsonCounty (Nashville) tiedfor the state’s lowest un-employment rate, eachwith 2.5 percent. The countyschool board changed itsmonthly meeting timefrom 7 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.,the Madisonville PlanningCommission approved asite plan for a proposedWaffle House off High-way 411, and a Maryvillemale, Ryan Allen, wascharged in the death of afemale whose body wasfound along Tellico Laketwo years earlier. In May, longtimeSweetwater educator Dr.Keith Hickey passed away. CASA Monroe celebratedits tenth anniversary. TheMonroe County Sheriff ’sDepartment seized$100,000 in drug funds,detaining two men in atractor-trailer rig stoppedon Interstate 75. On May17, police and law enforce-ment officers assembled indowntown Sweetwaterand honored fallen officersduring Peace Officers Me-morial Day. The annual MemorialDay observance tookplace at the county court-house on May 29. In early June, two menlost their lives in a vehicleaccident on Highway 129 –the “Dragon” – KeithOgle, a graduate of Se-quoyah High School, theother a Sevierville resi-dent. The MadisonvillePolice Department con-ducted a “drug roundup,”arresting eight suspects. Former SweetwaterCity Schools Director

Doctor Melanie Millerwas named Southeast Su-perintendent of the Year,the recognition coming inher second year as Athenscity director of schools. County officials brokeground for the new justicecenter on June 16, settingthe clock ticking for theplanned 26-month project. A Monroe Countysheriff ’s deputy wascharged in a double homi-cide in Loudon, ColbyCannon allegedly killinghis sister and fiancé.
