Bears Defeat CSASTulli Cole The District 3-A Tour-nament was playing outwithin the halls of TellicoPlains High School. TheBears, leaped headlonginto a heated, semifinalcontest with the Patriotsof Chattanooga School forthe Arts and Sciences. Itwas a thrilling duel, onewhich found the Bearsboth falling behind butthen boldly fighting backinto the mix. And thanksto this tenacity and excel-lent foul shooting in thefinal minutes, the Bearsclaimed victory—and aberth to the champi-onship game. The Patriots won thefirst points of the game. But the Bears were quickto respond. Dale Rinehartnailed a floater on theother end of the floor.Dakota Shaw then nettedthe lead for the Bears, when his foul shot made ita 2-3 game. CSAS retook the leadwith a basket. Cue DavidCrace and Jesse Lambert.D. Crace connected withthe open J. Lambert, andhe proceeded to nail ashot from beyond the arcto give the Bears the 4-6lead. The next five pointswent the way of CSAS.Bringing an end to thisbrief run was D. Crace.Following a brilliant hustlesave (and assist) from D.Shaw, D. Crace tallied thebasket to bring the Bearsto within one (9-8) of theirrivals. But with less than aminute remaining in thequarter, the Patriotsscored another bucket. Itwould be their last, how-ever, for the Bears’ de-fense held during the finalmoments. The score at the end ofthe first quarter was 11-8. The Bears opened thesecond quarter with pos-session, and D. Cracequickly drew first bloodfor the Bears. He bankedin the money shot tomake it an 11-10 game.Mere moments later, he

struck yet again by drivingin for the basket. D. Cracewas fouled during this at-tempt, and he sunk bothshots from the line to givethe Bears the 11-12 lead. It would not be theirlast points, either. Theywere the beginning of an8-0 run by the Bears. Thenext four points camecourtesy of D. Shaw and J.Lambert. D. Shaw tallied afoul shot. And when JacobBrinkley prolonged thepossession with an offen-sive rebound, J. Lamberthad all the time he neededto burn the net from be-yond the arc. The Bears now led 11-16 lead. CSAS scored to makeit a 13-16 game, only forthe Bears to answer thosepoints. J. Lambert savedthe possession, allowingD. Crace to snag the bas-ket and make it a 13-18game. But the final points ofthe half belonged toCSAS. The Patriotslocked up the scoreboardbefore time expired. The score at halftimewas 18-18. The Bears had the firstpossession of the secondhalf. J. Lambert quicklyconnected with the openPiper Carter, and P. Carterwasted little time in nail-ing a trey for the Bears togive them the 18-21 lead. However, the Bearsthen fell into some offen-sive woes. And while theysearched for a shot, thePatriots went on a 9-0 runto take the 27-21 lead. D. Shaw brought anend to the Bears’ dry spell. With 3:47 remaining inthe quarter, he punchedhis ticket for a trip to theline. He tallied the freethrow. The hometown heroeswould come still closer, too. Soon after D. Shaw’sfoul shot, D. Crace con-nected with J. Lambert-who promptly nailed ashot from beyond the arcfor a trio of points. D.Rinehart’s hustle defensethen put a stop to a

would-be possession forCSAS, paving the way to apossession which foundD. Crace taking a trip tothe foul line. He sunkboth shots while there, tying the game at 27-27 inthe process. And with lessthan a minute remainingin the quarter, D. Shaw re-turned the offensive re-bound for another duo ofpoints. Throughout it all, theBears’ defense did notallow another CSASbucket to cross theirsights. The score at the end ofthe third quarter was 27-29. The Patriots tied upthe game with 7:41 re-maining in the game.

But the Bears wereswift to make those pointsnull and void and thensome. D. Crace firstcaught D. Shaw down low,and D. Shaw whippedaround to score a basket.D. Rinehart then snaggeda pass out of midair, a stealwhich he turned into apair of points on the otherend of the floor. Not longafterward, D. Rinehartalso punched his ticket fora winning trip to the line. His foul shots gave theBears the 29-35 game. CSAS made it a 31-35game with a bucket. P.Carter (off the assist fromJ. Lambert) mirrored itwith one of his own. Andwhen the Patriots scoredanother basket, Evan Har-ris responded with an-other basket for TellicoPlains. E. Harris was also

fouled during his shot, andhe made it a three-pointplay in short order. J. Lam-bert then added to thesepoints with a successfulone-and-one opportunity. The Bears now led 33-42. The Patriots scored thenext six points to make ita 39-42 game. However, the Bears stepped up tomeet this challenge. Excel-lent foul shooting by J.Lambert, D. Crace, and D.Rinehart, coupled with ateam-up play by P. Carterand D. Shaw, allowed theBears to both defend theirlead and add to it. Victory was theirs. The final score was 43-52. It was now time forcommittee reports.Brenda Tipton announcedthere would be a soup sup-per on Thursday at theVonore Community Cen-ter. Following this reportcame still others, thesefrom the departmentheads. Alderman Swaffordrepresented the publicworks department. He re-ported he had spoken withMr. Williams. Both menhad taken a trip out to theball field to see theprogress of the project.Swafford noted that withthe recent rains, a greatdeal of this space was nowfilled with water. The public works de-partment had also beendoing brush work, saidSwafford. It had also maderepairs on the pump sta-tion near Vonore CityHall. Swafford then re-ported the departmenthad started on the recom-mendations made by theauditor, such as fencingand signage. New blindshad been placed in themuseum as well. As James Brown wasabsent due to illness, therewas no report for theVonore Fire Departmentat this time. Sparks updated theboard on the recent go-ings-on of the parks andrecreation department. She reported the depart-ment had dug footings atthe park. However, theheavy rains have made acanal in the same area. Sparks did have somegood news, however. She

announced the MonroeCounty Health Council isapplying for a grant. Thefunds from this grant willbe shared with the townsof Monroe County. If thegrant is won, Vonore couldreceive $12,000 to use onitems such as solar lighting(for the fishing pier), sig-nage, and equipment.Sparks concluded her re-port by saying she had an-other item to discuss, anitem she would bring up asan order of new business. The Vonore Police De-partment was representedby Hammontree. He re-ported matters were goingwell for the department.Several changes had beenmade at the Vonore PoliceDepartment in recentweeks as well. ness to come before theboard on February 13, soits members immediatelyturned to a few matters ofnew business. As promised, Sparksbrought forward an itemfor discussion. She wishedto appoint a parks andrecreation director. Underthe town’s Benchmarkplan, it must have an offi-cial director. It is also rec-ommended by TML.Sparks recommended andnominated Bob Starcherto the position. She statedStarcher had worked forseveral years in a role sim-ilar to that of a director. Itwould be for a two-yearterm. Hammontree secondedthe motion put forward bySparks. The measurepassed with all ayes. The Vonore TownBoard then welcomedRichard L. Russell ofBrown, Pearman, and Rus-sell, LLC. Together, theydiscussed the ten yearmaster plan for the parkssystem of Vonore. Russell stated he hadmet with the board at aprevious workshop. Dur-ing this workshop, theboard and Russell talkedabout the ten-year plan, concepts for the park, andthe recent survey. Theboard asked for somechanges to be made to theconcept plan. Russell hadbrought back these re-quested amendments. Healso wished for some inputfrom the board on a fewremaining issues.

Russell bore with himtwo concept plans: theoriginal and the new. Thenew concept plan in-cluded the original plansfor a quad-plex and fields. However, it included someadditions. A larger parkinglot was included, as werebasketball courts adjourn-ing the lot. The low-im-pact area, borderingresidences, now had thepossibility of a dog park.An ADA-compliant park-ing lot and playground hadbeen added, too, as was aplayground to be locatednear the ball fields at thequad-plex. Following this review ofthe additions, Russell andthe Vonore Town Boardspoke about what land wasowned by Vonore andwhat was part of the TVAeasement. Another ques-tion was what land was upfor future grants, andwhich areas were part ofthe 2012 grant. Russell alsobrought up the possibilityof limitation of use. Russell then high-lighted his firm’s recom-mendations to the masterplan. They included ideasfor physical improve-ments, long-term mainte-nance, operational andmanagement, and devel-opment strategies. Someparticular ideas men-tioned were to have ADA-compliant sites and toseek to put in the trail sys-tem. Russell also asked theboard to be aware thatmaintenance costs for thegrowing park system

would continue to go up.He then noted the townhad already taken a stepforward in strengtheningits management policiesby appointing a parks andrecreation director. Russell wished to speakin more detail about thenext five years. Would thetown continue to rely onthe RTP and LPRFgrants? This strategywould take some time. Healso suggested the possi-bility of getting a loan tofinish the quad-plex. Ei-ther way, Russell pointedout that Vonore must letthe state know what itsstrategy is. Lovingood noted thesurvey had revealed thatcitizens wished to makeuse of as many grants aspossible. He stated thiswas his preference as well, noting the other depart-ments also have needs. Hedid not wish to fall into asituation where the otherdepartments were beingstarved. Russell stated he wouldthus show this strategy tothe state—i.e. the plan ofgoing after future grants.Lovingood added thetown could do somethings, as long as it stayedwithin its means. Hespecifically mentionedworking on the bathroomfacility. Sparks also sug-gested the possibility ofdonations. Before ending the dis-cussion, Russell shared theTRDA’s annual reportwith the Vonore Town

Board. It mentioned howadventure tourism washelping the TRDA tobuild sites for ATVs andcampgrounds. He notedhow Vonore will needplaces for people to stay, especially since tourna-ments would be played onits fields. It was just athought, said Russell. A final decision on theten year master plan willbe made at the next meet-ing of the Vonore TownBoard. Danny Amschler thenposed a few questions. Heasked about the long-termplans for the low-impact

areas of the plan, and howlong it would take to meetthese goals, as he was stillfacing drainage issues onhis property. The VonoreTown Board as a wholeagreed this issue needed tobe addressed, and waslooking into doing so. With nothing more todiscuss, Sparks made amotion to adjourn for theevening. Swafford sec-onded the motion. Themeasure passed with allayes. The meeting came toan end at 8:09 p.m. *Thanks out to CityRecorder Courtney Dal-ton-Viar for all your help.

Lady Wildcats StageEpic District ComebackTulli Cole It was tournamenttime in Tennessee, and theLady Wildcats foundthemselves in the thick ofit on Thursday, February15. In their first duel of thedistrict tournament, theyfound themselves in a nail-biter against Polk County. The Lady Wildcats fell be-hind and rallied, clawingback into the mix andclaiming a victory. Polk County won theopening tip, but the LadyWildcats scored first.Mikalee Martin snaggedthe offensive rebound andscored. Polk County put afoul shot on the board, but M. Martin foundShelby Watson for a three. The next four pointsbelonged to Polk County, locking up the scoreboardat 5-5. Kassedy McCoolgrabbed a rebound andfound Mari Robbins for abasket. The lead returnedto the Lady Wildcats. But then Polk Countyscored the next fourpoints. M. Martin tied thegame at 9-9 with a bucket, only for Polk County toscore a three-pointer. Itwould be the last shot ofthe quarter. The Lady Wildcatsstruck back at the begin-ning of the second quar-ter. K. McCool burnt thenet with a trey, tying thegame. Polk County won athree-point play to takethe 15-12 lead. The LadyWildcats responded inkind. Taylor Hurst first re-turned an offensive re-bound for a basket. ThenM. Robbins connectedwith the open Abbey Barrwho snagged a bucket togive the Lady Wildcatsthe 15-16 lead. But then the LadyWildcats fell into foultrouble and Polk Countywent on a 9-0 run. It was M. Robbins whobrought an end to theLady Wildcats’ dry spell. With less than a minute

remaining in the half, shenetted a jumper to make ita 24-18 game. The secondquarter came to an endwith a Sweetwater re-bound. Polk County jumpedout to a 29-18 lead to openthe third quarter. Sweetwater fought tofind a basket until the 5:30marker, when M. Robbinspicked a pocket andscored. A. Barr’s defensethen forced anotherturnover out of PolkCounty, leading directly toa possession in which M.Martin found K. McCoolwho was fouled. She putaway both foul shots, making it a 29-22 game. Polk County scored acouple of foul shots on theother end of the floor. T.Hurst matched thosepoints with a basket of herown. At the 1:36 marker,Polk County added to itslead with another foulshot. But then the LadyWildcats brought forwarda sweltering, hounding de-fense. Their press ensuredthat not a single shotpassed their sights, even asM. Robbins and M. Mar-tin each scored. The scoreat the end of the thirdquarter was 32-27. The Lady Wildcatsopened up the fourth andfinal quarter with posses-sion, and they wasted littletime in landing a blow. S.Watson snagged an offen-sive rebound and returnedit for a duo of points. Andwhen Polk County won athree-point play, the LadyWildcats swiftly made itnull and void. S. Watsonput away another basket,

and A. Barr and K. Mc-Cool teamed up for a treyto bring the Lady Wildcatsto within one (35-34) oftheir opponents. A pair of foul shots byPolk County made it a 37-34 game. But it did not re-main that way for long. The Lady Wildcats hadclaimed momentum. K.McCool connected with S.Watson, who sank a shotto cut the lead back downto one. The Lady Wild-cats’ defense then forced aturnover out of PolkCounty, paving the way toa possession which foundS. Watson driving into thepaint for another bucket. Just like that, the LadyWildcats had rallied andtaken the lead. The scorewas 37-38. Three foul shots swungcommand of the score-board back to PolkCounty. However, theLady Wildcats respondedand then some. M. Robbins first pro-longed a possession bygrabbing the offensive re-bound. She was fouledwhile driving in for a shot, and proceeded to put awaya foul shot. And whenPolk County scored a bas-ket, S. Watson mirrored itby tearing up the middlefor another bucket. Less than a minute nowremained in the game. The score was 42-41. Atthe 42-second marker, K.McCool took a charge. The Lady Wildcats thusreclaimed possession, apossession S. Watson usedto score-and take the 42-43 lead. They would soon addto it, ensuring their victoryin the process. Following atimeout, the Lady Wild-cats beat Polk County’spress, and M. Robbinsscored on a last second

shot. The win went to therelentless Lady Wildcats. The final score was 42-45.
