The bigger picture

The Pembridge Hospice is a part of a big umbrella organisation called the Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust (CLCH). CLCH provides community health services to around a million people across London and Hertfordshire, including in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea where the Pembridge Hospice is based. CLCH provide high quality healthcare in people's homes or at convenient local clinics, helping them to stay well, manage their own health with the right support and avoid unnecessary trips to, or long stays in hospital.

Pembridge Hospice charity (part of CLCH Charity, registered charity no.1120231), supports the work of the hospice by funding services and equipment that go above and beyond the NHS. Thanks to the generous support of the people we help and the local community, the charity is able to fund all massage and art therapy, a rehabilitation assistant, improvements to the hospice environment (like the fish tank!), birthday presents for patients with no family and much more. Volunteer and fundraising support is also provided by the charity.

Pembridge Hospice – what we do

The Pembridge Hospice provides specialist care services for patients with life limiting illnesses and complex care needs. The Pembridge team all work together to help people face the challenges of living with a life-limiting illness.

The three main teams providing care at Pembridge:

In-patient unit: The inpatient unit has 13 beds and provides 24 hour care for patients with specialist palliative care needs. Patients can be admitted at any time during the day or night depending upon bed availability. Patients are admitted for symptom control, rehabilitation after treatment, respite care and end of life care.

Day hospice: The day hospice offers a range of services to help people adjust to the physical

limitations caused by their illness, along with the social and psychological implications. The day

hospice is open four days a week and provides a range of services including symptom control,

psychological support, complementary therapy and respite care for patients and their carers.

Community specialist palliative care team: The community team works with GPs, district

nurses and other services to support patients and families at home depending upon their needs

including symptom management, future care planning, emotional and psychological support and

support during last stages of illness.

We also offer a range of other specialist services within the hospice which includes:

Spiritual care: Spiritual care offers a holistic package around the religious and cultural

needs of patients, relatives and friends.

Social work team: The social work team offers counselling support, advice and guidance

around areas including coping with terminal illness, concerns with informing loved ones,

financial implications, etc.

Welcome to Pembridge

Volunteers: The hospice relies heavily on volunteers to support the staff team in providing

specialist care to our patients. Volunteers enhance the service and are always

encouraged to join our team.

Fundraisers: Without the generous donations of individuals, the charity would not be able

to offer some of its specialist services. We have a dedicated fundraising manager who

works tiresomely to raise funds and awareness for the hospice.

“Sometimes patients aren’t able to

communicate with you but you

know they appreciate what you are

doing and that you have time for

them.

I enjoy helping with mealtimes too

and I must say the food the

patients get looks really good!”

What type of support do you provide to your volunteers? At Pembridge Hospice we take pride in our volunteers and like to support them in the following ways:

Shadowing opportunities.

On the job training.

Access to CLCH training that is relevant to the post.

Support with day to day activity via a supervisor/ placement lead.

Monthly well-being check.

Dedicated Volunteer Manager to support with personal development.

Will I get paid expenses? Yes, we will reimburse reasonable travel expenses (up to the value of a travel card a day) and lunch expenses up to £3.50 if you work four hours a day. We have a canteen on site where you can purchase hot meals.

Why do I need a DBS before I can volunteer for Pembridge Hospice? It is standard practice for anyone working in the charity sector to have a DBS in place if they are working with vulnerable people. We understand that sometimes DBS checks takes weeks to clear therefore we can send you induction documents and training material to complete whilst you wait for your DBS to clear.

What if I have content on my DBS? Depending on the nature of your conviction, we can do a risk assessment and get you started providing you have declared your convictions on your application. We appreciate honesty.

How long am I expected to commit? We ask all our volunteers to commit for at least four hours a session for over a period of 6 months (but we understand if you cannot commit four hours every week). We understand during this duration you may find employment or chose to terminate the volunteering for other reasons. You are not obliged to stay with us but it makes it easier for us and our patients if we had an agreed commitment.

Will volunteering affect my benefits? Our advice will be to always speak to your personal adviser before you start volunteering with us. The general rules are that you can volunteer provided that: You are looking for paid work. You must be free to go to an interview on request of the Job Centre plus. You must be able to start work within one week of this notice.

Do I need to bring anything with me to an interview? Yes, in order to speed up the recruitment process, we ask you to bring your DBS documents with you to the interview. The volunteer manager will photocopy the documents and return the original back to you on the same day. If we decide to proceed with the recruitment then we shall process your documents otherwise we will confidentiality destroy it.

Can I volunteer if someone I know was/ is a patient at Pembridge? Yes, you can, however, we advise that you wait nine months after bereavement before you begin volunteering with Pembridge.
