Optimising Power Efficiency in Mobile Radio Networks (OPERA-Net)in EU CELTIC program

General targets for the CELTIC project: Radical improvement in energy efficiency at system level Develop metrics and key performance indicators for mobile network efficiency Enable leadership for EU industry in environmentally sustainable mobile networks

VTT’s goals: Development of a methodology for evaluating average power amplifier (PA) efficiency with various multi-antenna and power control techniques. In addition, bit error rate performance is provided. Different type of PAs can be used.

Exploitation potentiality: Using the average PA efficiency, a PA manufacturer can show the benefits of their PA design in a given system, or a system designer can select efficient communication techniques for a given PA.

Main result(s): The average PA efficiency has been analytically calculated for different power control rules and multi-antenna techniques. Results are available for both constant amplitude signal and OFDM signal approximation. The bit error rate as a function of transmitted signal-to-noise ratio has also been calculated. Channel models used so far include flat fading with Rayleigh and Rician distribution.

B. Peer-to-peer file-sharing with fully distributed (trackerless) algorithms•identification of the emergence of ‘rare chunk phenomenon’ when a simple greedy algorithm is used•new simple algorithms alleviating the rare chunk problem invented (paper accepted to Queueing Systems)•PlanetLab experiments on the own Chord-based PAN-NET client

C. Statistical methods for dependent heavy-tailed quantities•analysis of statistical dependence of file volumes and durations in TCP traffic captured from a mobile operator’s network•parametric model of the unobserved distribution of rates of largest flows given the observed joint distribution of flow sizes (bytes) and durations

Security Testing and Monitoring (TNT)

The main result was a generic framework/process for security testing and monitoring with guidelines to:

Integrate security testing to company’s/project’s other R&D activities,

Improve a security level of the product with systematic way,

Bring out critical parts of a system in the early phase of a product life cycle,

Increase test coverage from a security point of view.

• The ultimate goal of the TNT project was to build a uniform security testing and monitoring framework by applying testing and monitoring products, which are provided by Finnish manufacturers• The aim of the framework was to collect information about security level, observe security problems by testing and decrease effect of security vulnerabilities to critical parts of a system

Product testing over converging networks - CNL-Products

Project estimated the existing ICT product certification market size: US~1300M$ and EU~270M€(1)

Project designed a certification service consisting laboratory, live test network and production network testing for ICT products such as applications, network components and service systems.

During project a new certification service was planned that combined expertise, resources, and testing tools of participating organizations and companies.

Service focused beyond the current ICT certification programs that leave the most tests outside of their scope such as end-2-end performance, mobility, error resilience, privacy/security and interoperability of products.
