February is a busy month for all at Central as we start a new semester and
prepare for ACT and Work Keys testing at the end of the month To help
us prepare for the upcoming tests we held Test Fest 2017 on Tuesday
January 24 All students grades 9 - 11 took a practice ACT while seniors
could choose from a number of practice exams that will benefit them as
they move out of high school
Students were given the results of their practice exams I encourage you to
talk to your child about their test results taking a moment to celebrate what
went well and reflect on what could use some extra attention in the coming
weeks We want every student to feel like they are ready to come in for
ACT and Work Keys testing ready to do their best
Testing can cause a great deal of anxiety and stress The practice exam is
designed to take some of the mystery and stress out of these high stakes
tests because students will come in for exam day knowing exactly what to
expect To help parents and families know what to expect as well we will
be sending a variety of messages out between now and the testing days to
relay all of the important information for those days
Please keep in mind these important considerations for high-stakes testing
Get enough sleep in the days before
Eat well drink enough water
DO NOT bring electronic devices to the test including laptops
tablets phones watches or other devices
Amy VanDeuren Dr Amy Van Deuren Principal
On Tuesday December 20th the National Guard visited our physical education classes The students were able to get their heart rates up by participating in bubble
soccer climbing the obstacle course or trying their luck in the ring

ACADEMIC AND CAREER PLANS
ldquoWhy Do I Have To Learn This Stuffrdquo Without a doubt students have been asking this age-old question for many years School Counselors in our District have been able to help answer this question for students in a very meaningful way for several years now through the
implementation of our Comprehensive Student Services program which has included Individual Student Planning Conferences for all students in grades 5 8 9 and 11 As you may know these strength-based conferences have helped students to set realistic Academic Personal-Social and Career goals together with their parentsguardians and counselors This has provided students with more insight as to why they should take certain courses and how the courses are useful to them as they relate to possible career interests Beginning in the 2017-18 school year Wisconsin State Law (11528(59) ACADEMIC AND CAREER PLANNING) requires that school districts must provide these services to all students in grades 6-12 through the development of individualized Academic and Career Plans Our District along with 24 other districts across Wisconsin has been selected to participate in a pilot project to get started with the new requirement this school year Our School Counselors will begin this process by working with 9th grade students and their parentsguardians who donrsquot already have a good Academic and Career Plan in place Students and their parentsguardians will receive more detailed information about this from Ms Amber Hill School Counselor in the very near future In the meantime if you would like more information about this please feel free to contact Ms Hill at 604-

CENTRAL PARKING LOT INGRESS AND EGRESS
The following rules apply to the parking lot across the street
You may enter through the west gate There is no entry permitted at the east gate You may exit turning LEFT ONLY at the east gate You may exit turning RIGHT ONLY at the west gate
Put another way
If you must turn RIGHT out of the parking to go EAST please use the WEST GATE ONLY If you must turn LEFT out of the parking lot to go WEST please use the EAST GATE ONLY
This arrangement is a bit awkward because you will use the exit farthest from the direction you need to go However with the crosswalk located by the east gate the directions were placed to ensure that exiting cars do not cross over the crosswalk while turning and accelerating Thank you for your cooperation
Severe weather and school closings
One of the primary goals of West Allis-West Milwaukee school district personnel is to protect the safety and well-being of students If severe weather conditions develop a decision to close will only be made after carefully considering a number of factors The timing of the decision is influenced by the severity intensity and movement of the storm center A decision to close will be made as early as possible preferably by 6 am Area radio TV and cable television stations will be notified immediately after the decision is made so that students parents and staff members will be informed promptly Dismissing Classes Early An effort will be made to follow the regular end-of-the-day dismissal schedule since changing it can cause confusion and inconvenience for parents and students On those rare occasions when maintaining the regular schedule might result in large groups of students being unable to return home safely school will be dismissed early In such instances radio and television stations will be asked to provide advance warning of the closing time Bus Transportation and Early Dismissal Bus transportation not grade level is the main factor that determines dismissal times Bus scheduling is a complicated matter and route changes during an early dismissal have the potential for causing confusion and the later arrival home of students Bus schedules are rarely changed during an early dismissal Upon the end of a school day many middle school and high school students are responsible for caring for their elementary-age brothers and sisters The school district wants to avoid transporting elementary school students home prior to the arrival of their older brothers and sisters Factors that determine school closings and early dismissals
