From the Director

This fall marks 90 years of achievement for WSU athletics. A lot has happened in that nearly century of existence including a rich tradition of success both competitively…as well as after graduation. Fittingly as

we turn “90”, the athletic department has been recognized for their highest finish ever in the National Athletic Director’s Cup Standings (NACDA) ending last year as the number twenty four ranked program in the country.

When you consider points are only awarded for teams that advance to NCAA postseason play, and because of our opportunity to accumulate those points is limited with only seventeen WSU athletic teams, that final ranking is remarkable. With 294 institutions competing in the overall standings, our progress is measured by the fact that our all-time six best national finishes have all been achieved in the past six years. Special kudos goes to a dedicated group of coaches and talented student-athletes led by the following teams that all achieved points in that record breaking total: men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s fencing, softball, golf, men’s cross country, and men’s and women’s tennis.

When the legendary David L. Holmes was hired away from Cass Technical High School to start the insipid program back in the fall of 1917, few could have envisioned the WSU of today…or even Detroit for that matter. The entire school at that time numbered almost 150 while today there are over 400 student-athletes alone on campus. Looking back at notes from that period, that first group was confronted with a number of challenges not the least of which was a reluctance by “bigger schools” to compete against an upstart, fledgling program and the lack of adequate facilities. It’s ironic that some 90 years later we are still vexed by issues of facilities…and the “right” positioning of athletics.

However one certainty has evolved from those first programs that started with a basketball game in the winter of 1918 – the foundation of the program remains student-athletes who are committed to academic success, understanding the everyday lessons of teamwork and selflessness and the lasting friendships that have transcended the enrollment years at Woodward and Warren.

This coming year we will highlight that remarkable period of achievement with a number of initiatives. Many will be asked to pen short narratives of their own experiences as a coach, supporter or student-athlete – as much for history as to be a learning tool for present-day student-athletes. We will take time to showcase some of the great teams (and individuals) of the past including a recognition and depiction of the top ten all-time men and women basketball student-athletes and some coaches of the past. Our radio, website and new B2 network association will further illustrate that history. It is quite a story, some of which you may already know, and some of which will touch you from days long past.

We have already started the recognition as the front of the Matthaei is now depicted with a mural of present-day coaches and student athletes blended with those who have been the foundation of today’s successes. And finally, we will reveal our strategic plan for athletics for the 100-year celebration that will take place in 2018. We can only speculate on the next 10 years of achievement.

The list of standouts over the past 90 years on this campus reads like a Who’s Who of the University – Danosi, Adams, Mason, Holmes, Prew, Tolmich, Dues, Schileru, Sweeney, Gembis and Kline to name only a few. But in addition to those more renowned names, there are also literally thousands of “less celebrated” student-athletes that have benefited by their time at Wayne State. And just as importantly, many have gone on to positively impact others by their experiences, associations and examples natured and developed while on this campus. The simple benchmarks that are the everyday staple of athletics – hard work, perseverance, dedication and commitment become engrained in the fabric of the individual…and in turn those they later meet and encourage. Sometimes in life we learn “lessons” from the lives of others. The student-athletes of Wayne State have been great examples of that instructive discipline over the years. These lessons were the direct result of associations with people of different backgrounds, coaches who emphasized ideals of character in sometimes subtle (and in other times not so subtle ways) and the simple strength to learn to confront challenges that may impede you…but not stop you.

So after 90 years, we will tell that story again. Maybe with not quite the same dramatic originality, and maybe with not the same vigor as that moment in time, but nonetheless, with a pride that is distinctively, Wayne State.

WARRIOR WITHIN NACDA Finish / Comcast Games

The Wayne State University Department of Athletics placed 24th in the nation, the best finish in school history, in the final 2006-07 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Directors’ Cup Standings. The Warriors earned a school-record total of 430 points as nine of the 17 sports participated in their respective NCAA Championships.

WSU accumulated 163 points from four spring teams -- softball (tied-for-25th) and men’s tennis (tied-for-17th) earned 50 points each, while women’s tennis (tied-for-33rd) gained 25 points. Men’s golf recorded 28 points with its tied-for-41st finish.

From its four winter sports that qualified for the NCAA Championships, Wayne State received 211 points (60 from women’s swimming which placed 10th; 66 from men’s and women’s fencing which placed eighth; and 85 points from men’s swimming which placed third, the best finish in school history).

Men’s cross country garnered 66 points last fall after finishing eighth at the 2006 NCAA Championship.

The U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors

of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women’s and seven men’s.

WSU’s best national finish prior to this year came as the Warriors placed 25th in the nation in the final 2004-05 NACDA Directors’ Cup Standings.

The Warriors six best finishes ever in the NACDA Directors’ Cup standings, which measures the overall performance of athletic

programs around the country, have occurred in the last six years. WSU has jumped 100 places in the standings in the last six seasons.

In July 2006, Wayne State University Director of Athletics Rob Fournier announced that Wayne State University and Comcast Local entered into an agreement that will provide coverage of men’s and women’s athletic events to Comcast cable subscribers throughout Michigan.

Now, Comcast customers will be able to view in-depth, year-round coverage of Wayne State University athletics. A total of 30 events will be aired during the three years of the contract.

“Comcast Local is the area’s premier destination for college and high school sports programming,” said Steve Thomas, Vice President and General Manager of Comcast-Detroit. “We are excited to be able to work with Wayne State University to bring more attention to Warrior sports for fans throughout Michigan.”

“It is exciting to know that the quality of athletic competition at Wayne State that is witnessed by so many fans, will now be seen state-wide in Michigan,” noted Fournier. “Our 200,000 plus alums in this area will now have an opportunity to view live on Comcast some of the color, pageantry and tradition of WSU athletics across a range of sports.”

Warrior sports that may be aired on Comcast Local include men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s ice hockey, baseball and softball.

The 2006-07 season was another banner year for the Wayne State swimming and diving program. The men’s squad finished third at the NCAA Division II Championships while the women’s team placed 10th, both setting new standards at WSU as the best performances in school history. Wayne State also swept the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles for the second straight season to join Oakland University – which did it seven times from 1989-97 – as the only schools in GLIAC history to win both championships in consecutive seasons.

For the sixth straight year, head coach Sean Peters earned GLIAC Men’s Coach of the Year accolades, passing his former mentor, Oakland’s Pete Hovland, for most Coach of the Year awards in GLIAC history. Peters also garnered the Women’s Coach of the Year award, marking the

second year in a row he has earned both league distinctions, as well as the Men’s Coach of the Meet at nationals.

Many school and league records fell during a season in which 22 Warriors earned All-America honors and 13 were GLIAC All-Academic Team selections.

The men’s team, which won its fourth GLIAC title in the last five years, totaled 830 points at the meet,

second-most in history behind Oakland’s 952 points in 1987. Seniors Bruno Blanco (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Luiz Pacheco (Curitiba, Brazil), and Jared Troyer (Portage, Mich.), who combined for seven individual All-America awards at the NCAA Championships, led the way.

Blanco, completing his final semester of eligibility last winter, took six All-America honors at nationals. He finished third in the 100 butterfly, breaking his own school record (49.12), and was part of three WSU-record setting relays including the second-place 200 medley relay (1:30.21) which also came in under the previous national record (1:30.27) but was behind North Dakota’s first-place time of 1:29.86. Blanco successfully defended his conference title in the 100 fly (49.65), setting a GLIAC record, and swam the butterfly portion of the first-place 200 (1:32.00) and 400 medley relays (3:24.08), both of which set WSU and GLIAC records.

Pacheco earned five First Team All-America honors, including four relays. He finished sixth in the 100 backstroke (50.88) after setting a school record of 50.44 in the preliminary round. Pacheco also had three top-eight individual finishes at GLIACs, including a second-place showing in the 100 back (51.47), and led off the 200 and 400 medley relays.

Troyer won the 400 individual medley (4:03.94) at the GLIAC Championships and led off the school-record setting 800 free relay (6:50.82). He earned five All-America honors, four of which were in individual events. Troyer placed eighth in the 1000 free (9:32.10) and seventh in the 200 fly (1:52.63) at nationals.

Sophomore Guilherme Veiga (Vinton, Va.) followed up on a successful rookie campaign by winning three events at the GLIAC Championships and earning three First Team All-America honors. Veiga successfully defended his conference title in the 1650 free (15:49.99) and also won the

500 free (4:36.64) and 1000 free (9:27.34). He went on to finish third in the 1000 free (9:23.81) and fourth in the 1650 free (15:43.89) at nationals while placing sixth in the 500 free (4:34.65) after setting a WSU record of 4:33.24 in the preliminary round.

Wayne State also received significant contributions from its newcomers, particularly freshmen Christer Tour (Farsta, Sweden) and Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) as well as Delta State transfer Tiago Oliveira (Raul Soares, Brazil).

Tour made an impact on the record books in his rookie campaign and received four First Team All-America honors in the process. He won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke at GLIACs, setting a league record in the former, and broke his own school records while finishing second in both events at nationals. Tour was also on all four combinations to break Wayne State’s 200 medley relay record during the course of the year.

A five-time All-American and GLIAC champion in the 400 free relay, Bedran helped set five WSU records at the Eastern Michigan Invitational in December, including two as a relay leadoff man. He broke a 26-year old WSU record (Gary Bice, 1980, 21.31) in the opening 50 free (21.10) of the 200 free relay and led off the 400 free relay with a time of 45.93, besting the old standard of 46.66 set by David Lutz in 2005.

Oliveira was a member of four All-America relays, including three that set WSU records, and tied Bedran’s school record in the preliminary round of the 50 free. He also finished second in the 50 and 100 free at the GLIAC Championships.

The WSU men’s team had 14 All-Americans altogether including all three of its divers – freshman Cayce Bolt (Royal Oak, Mich.) and seniors Dan Fleming (Portage, Mich.) and Chris Totten (Garden City, Mich.).

The women’s squad, meanwhile, won its second consecutive GLIAC title, the first two league championships in the program’s history. A trio of rookies made a significant impression, including Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison) who was named Co-Freshman of the Year.

St. Andrew, a six-time All-American, broke the school record in the 1000 free three times and the 500 and 1650 freestyle events twice during the season. She won the 500 and 1000 free at the GLIAC Championships, setting a league record in the latter, and finished second in both events as well as the 1650 free at nationals. St. Andrew was also a part of three Honorable Mention relays.

Fellow freshman Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich.) led the team with seven All-America awards, including four Honorable Mention relays and a seventh-place finish in the 200 butterfly. Winner of the 200 individual medley and the 200 fly (setting a league record) at the

GLIAC Championships, Hogle helped set multiple school records during the season, including the 200 IM three times and the 400 IM twice.

Four-time All-American Laura Leix (Flint, Mich.) broke the school record in the 100 butterfly twice, most recently in the preliminary round at nationals (58.41). She took second in the 200 butterfly (2:09.52) and fourth in the 100 fly (59.00) at the conference meet.

Melissa Duff (Howell, Mich.), last year’s GLIAC Freshman of the Year, retained her conference title in the 1650 freestyle (17:31.19) while finishing second in the 1000 free (10:35.18) and fourth in the 500 free (5:11.04). She also claimed three Honorable Mention All-America accolades.

Eight members of the women’s team were All-Americans, including diver Erika Barczak (Williamston, Mich.), who was selected to the 2006-07 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-District IV College Division Women’s At-Large First Team in addition to winning both the GLIAC one-meter (377.10) and three-meter (447.75) diving competitions.

Peters and the Warriors will undoubtedly look forward to more success as they kick off the 2007-08 season Oct. 19 at Eastern Michigan.

In May 2007, Wayne State University and B2 Networks announced a partnership bringing Warrior athletics to the revolutionary broadband broadcasting network. The partnership began with Wayne State’s graduation ceremonies that month.

By teaming with B2 Networks, Wayne State athletics will be available for viewing by a world wide audience. Beginning this fall, GLIAC events such as football, men’s and women’s basketball along with Division I CHA hockey will be available through the school athletic website.

“This partnership extends our outreach network for our fans and over 250,000 alumni worldwide,” commented Wayne State University Athletics Director Rob Fournier. “This B2 association, combined with our Michigan-wide television package, extended radio agreement with WDTK (1400 AM) for football, basketball and hockey and live streaming of events provides professional, top-quality options for our growing fan base. After reviewing a number of opportunities, B2 provided the first-class affiliation our supporters have come to expect.”

Fans wanting to watch WSU events via B2 will need a high-speed Internet connection and Windows Media Player 9 or higher. Games will be sold on an individual basis with special viewing packages also available.

“B2 Networks is very happy to welcome Wayne State as a broadcast partner,” said Bruce LeVine, B2 Networks’ Senior Vice President of Sports. “By adding Wayne State we are now able to offer games from

four different GLIAC schools and a second member of College Hockey America, giving fans more choices than ever to follow their favorite sports and players.”

B2 Networks is a premier provider of reliable and secure international television and video broadcasting systems, pay per view and billing systems. B2’s network of arenas, stadiums, local venues, billing systems and data centers are currently in use to distribute live events to personal

The Wayne State fencing squads earned an eighth-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Championships on the strength of two individual national champions and a team score of 76 victories (43 by the women and 33 by the men).

Penn State (194) won the team title and was followed by St. John’s (176), Columbia (169), Notre Dame (160), Ohio State (144), Harvard (123), Pennsylvania (104) and the Warriors. WSU finished ahead of Stanford (67), Princeton (64), Northwestern (51) and Rutgers (46) as 28 schools were represented.

It was Wayne State’s fourth consecutive year in the top 10, while the eighth-place finish was the best for WSU since 1992.

Senior epeeist Anna Garina (Kiev, Ukraine) earned her third NCAA individual title with a 15-13 win over Notre Dame’s Kelley Hurley in the gold medal bout. She won the NCAA title 2004 and 2005, and finished second in 2006. Garina is WSU’s first female fencer to be a three-time NCAA Champion, and only the third in

school history (Greg Benko won three consecutive men’s foil titles in 1974-76; Ernest Simon won three men’s foil titles between 1978 and 1981).

Garina is also the first women epeeist in NCAA history to win three

national titles and just the third female in any weapon with three NCAA titles (Penn State’s Olga Kalinovskaya won four straight women’s foil 1993-96; Notre Dame’s Alicia Kryczalo won three straight women’s foil 2002-04).

Freshman Viacheslav Zingerman (Ashkelon, Israel) claimed the NCAA title in men’s epee. He prevailed 15-8 over Warrior senior Marek Petraszek (Gliwice, Poland)

in a semifinal bout, then defeated top-seeded Benjamin Bratton, a senior at St. John’s, 15-13 in the gold medal bout.

Zingerman became Wayne State’s first male fencer to become a national champion sine Thorstein Becker won the foil in 1996. He is also the first epee champion since Wayne State Hall of Fame inductee Harald Bauder took the title in 1992.

In addition to Garina and Zingerman earning First Team All-America honors, Petraszek was a First Team selection (top four in each weapon for each gender) and Justyna Konczalska (Innsbruck, Austria) was an honorable mention All-American after placing ninth in the epee. Both Katarzyna Kuzniak (Konin, Poland) and Ann Bartoszewicz (Macomb, Mich.) competed in the sabre.

WARRIOR WITHIN Mike Kowal

Wayne State alumnus Michael E. Kowal (ED ’70) will be generously supporting the Athletics Department’s tennis program with a percentage of his estate. “I have no heirs and I want to leave my money where it will do the most good,” Mike said.

Mike is among the first four-year lettered athletes at Wayne State. He lettered in tennis as a freshman the initial year that athletic prowess in first-year students was recognized with a letter. He went on to achieve a

letter in tennis in each of his undergraduate years.

“I majored in math and graduated with a bachelor of science degree from the College of Education,” Mike noted. “But I always balanced my studies with my love of tennis. I’m still

very proud of my best won/loss record of 9-4 in singles and 9-5 in doubles (on the 1970 squad). The game continues to be important to me. As a member of the Southeastern Michigan Tennis Association, I am ranked second in my age group. I’m also a gold medalist in badminton singles and doubles in the Michigan Senior Olympics and I participated in the national senior games in Louisville, Kentucky this past June.”

“The game of tennis has always been an important part of my life and being able to play it at Wayne State while I was earning my degree meant a great deal to me,” he said. “I hope my support of the tennis program will help future student athletes continue their love of the sport.”

With his planned gift, Mike has become a member of the university’s Old Main Society, which was established to recognize and thank those who have included Wayne State in their estate plans. All members are invited to attend an annual Donor Appreciation Luncheon as well as other university events.

Gifts by alumni and friends can make a positive impact in many ways on Wayne State University. Carefully planning your investment in the Athletics Department can stretch the value of your gift, enabling you to do much more for our athletics programs than you may think possible. You can give generously through a bequest in a will or trust, a charitable gift annuity or remaining assets in your retirement fund

Development

Hello Warrior Fans! My name is Angela Ruth and I am the new Director of Development for Wayne State University Athletics as of October 2006. I am responsible for developing, organizing, and implementing the fund-raising plan for future renovations.

Previously I spent three and a half years at Lawrence Technological University in Alumni Relations and Annual Giving. I was ready for a change when the opportunity here presented itself and cannot believe that I’ve been here for nine months already.

As usual, we are busy in Warrior Athletics. It’s so exciting to be a part of all of the many accomplishments. I just love speaking to alumni and parents and hearing them praise the work of all of

the coaches, students, and staff. Recently, I had a conversation with Ann Marie Knuth, mother of Dale Knuth who plays the position of tight end on the Warrior football team. She called this a “diamond in the rough” program and called the people at Wayne State “stellar” and “people of character.”

“If anyone appreciates the football facilities, it’s the players who started there in the old facilities and have now had the chance to experience the news ones,” she said.

There are many ways you can support Warrior Athletics this year. Your gifts will help support

renovation of our facilities; provide needed funding for an Endowed Scholarship; or purchase new equipment. Here are a few of the many ways you can support WSU Athletics:

I look forward to meeting those of you whom I have not met yet and to seeing all of you at upcoming games and athletic events. Please come and find me and introduce yourself. If you haven’t been back to campus in a while, call me and set up a time to come and visit. You’ll be blown away when you see all of the improvements that have been made.

WARRIOR WITHIN Golf and Softball Recaps

The Wayne State men’s golf team was rewarded for its successful 2006-07 campaign with a berth in the NCAA Super Regional, its third appearance in the last four years.

The team finished ninth at the Great Lakes Regional at HawksHead back in September, the first of three NCAA Regional events, and eighth

at the GLIAC Championship in October. The Warriors played especially well in the spring, however, starting with the Regional at Perry Park where WSU came back from 15th to finish sixth.

After placing fourth at Ashland and second at Findlay, the Warriors won the Regional at Lockhaven, solidifying their place at the Super Regional where they finished fifth.

Individual honors went to junior Ryan Johnson (New Boston, Mich.), who was named the 2007 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Athlete of the Year in addition to earning a PING/Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Division II All-America Second Team selection.

Johnson’s season average of 72.931 is the best known and recorded average in Wayne State history, topping his previous high mark of 74.100 from two years ago. He competed in all 15 events, finishing eighth or better in 12 including two victories and six second-place showings.

Johnson was the runner-up at the GLIAC Championship (72-73-70--215), finishing just two strokes shy of the WSU 54-hole record (213) and totaling nine birdies and 38 pars in the tournament. He played strong golf during the spring season also, as his second-place finish at Lockhaven helped WSU win the event overall and propel the squad into the Super Regional, where Johnson tied for 20th (77-72-74--223).

Head coach Mike Horn was also rewarded for his efforts, as he was given GLIAC Coach of the Year accolades for the second time in his six-year career at Wayne State.

The Wayne State softball squad won the GLIAC regular-season title and conference championship (50% regular season + 50% conference tournament) plus finished in the top four at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional tournament for a very successful 2007 campaign.

The GLIAC title, which was the 13th during head coach Gary Bryce’s tenure and 14th overall for WSU, helped secure Bryce’s ninth GLIAC Coach of the Year award, and Wayne State’s 13th NCAA tournament appearance.

The Warriors compiled a 41-17 overall mark including a 15-5 GLIAC regular-season record.

Junior pitcher Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) earned All-America accolades from both the NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) and Daktronics. In addition to pitching the first perfect game in school history, Yetman recorded a 24-5 mark with a 0.65 earned-run average. She struck out a school record 300 batters in 195 innings while earning the GLIAC Player of the Year and the Daktronics Region Pitcher of the Year awards.

Joining Yetman on the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II All-Great Lakes Region First Team were first baseman Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) and outfielder Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.), while catcher Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont.) was a second team selection.

Kish was named to the CoSIDA 2007 Softball Academic All-District IV College Division First Team. She was the only GLIAC player in District 4 to earn First Team honors. A nutrition and food sciences major, Kish was voted to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) All-League First Team for the second consecutive year.

After starting the season at 6-6, the Warriors won 11 of their next 12 contests including the WSU Invitational with a 5-4 win over Ferris State in eight innings in the championship game. Following a home doubleheader split with Grand Valley that left WSU with a 7-5 conference mark, the Warriors won their final eight league games to win the regular-season title. In addition, Wayne State had a 13-game winning streak from April 21-May 4.

Behind first-year head coach Dennis Royal, the Wayne State Men’s Tennis team qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in two years and made the most of the opportunity by reaching the second round of the tournament.

The Warriors defeated conference foe Mercyhurst, 5-4, in the NCAA first round before falling, 5-0, to No. 2 ranked Drury in the second round. The Warriors finished the season ranked fifth in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional rankings with a 11-10 overall mark and 3-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) record.

The future looks bright as the Warriors were able to accomplish their high season goals with a young team led by GLIAC Freshman of the Year Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France) who was also named to the All-GLIAC First Team and finished the year ranked No. 15 in the final ITA Great Lakes Regional rankings. Marenaud complied a 9-10 overall singles mark at the No. 1 spot and paired with junior Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich.) at No. 1 doubles to record a 9-10 overall record. Mitchell was also was named to the GLIAC Second Team with an 11-8 singles mark at the No. 2 slot.

At No. 3 singles, junior Alejandro Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico) was voted to the All-GLIAC Second Team notching a team-best 16-3 record and was unbeaten in the last nine of 12 matches played with his bouts against Northwood in the GLIAC Tournament and Drury in the NCAA second round left unfinished. Gomez teamed with senior Arthur Carrilho (Joao Pessoa, Brazil) to compile an overall 8-4 record at No. 2 doubles. Carrilho also tallied a 10-10 record at the No. 4 singles spot.

Senior Ryan Buck (Shelby Twp., Mich.) was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention at the No. 5 singles slot with a 12-8 overall record. Buck, a finance major, was named to the GLIAC All-Academic team and finished his career as a three-time GLIAC All-Academic team honoree.

Football Preview

Wayne State football had its first winning season on the field since 1993 last year despite having a true freshman start all 11 games at quarterback.

This year with 38 returning letterwinners the bar has been raised even higher for the WSU football squad.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence therefore is not an act but a habit,” said head coach Paul Winters, the 2006 GLIAC Coach of the Year.

WSU compiled a 3-2 mark at both home and on the road in league play a year ago which indicates a maturing football team.

In addition, last year under the tutelage of Winters, Wayne State had three All-Americans in running back Joique Bell, cornerback Derrion Fuqua and kicker David Chudzinski.

OffenseThe Warriors, after coming five points shy of tying the

single-season school mark, should be strong offensively and experienced in every position but wide receiver.

Bell rushed behind an offensive line that consisted of just senior (Grant Fodor).

QuarTerbacks“We have three quarterbacks returning that have started

games.” “We have great expectations for the position,” said

Winters. “We feel that a year of experience will really help both Trent (Pohl) and Zack (George). They should both have a better understanding of the offense.

“We are excited about Josh Rouhan. He had a good off-season and is getting physically stronger and bigger. Mickey Berce has continued to improve while Nolan Martin has the most experience (17 career starts).”

running backs“This is our strongest position. Joique had a breakout

season and we expect him to continue to improve. Daryl Graham has done a really nice job in the off-season.”

Bell broke the NCAA Division II freshman rushing record by gaining 2,065 yards. He set WSU single-season records for rushing yards, rushing touchdowns (22), all-purpose yards (2,462), touchdowns (23) and points (138).

Graham, who had to sit out the 2006 season due to GLIAC transfer rules, gives WSU a solid 1-2 tandem in the backfield.

wide receiVersLast year’s top two in receptions have graduated creating

an opening for immediate playing time.“This is an exciting position. We have some good young

quality players. Chris Alsina was injured much last year but when he played did give us some big plays.

“Aaron Higginbottom is getting better and we are very excited about Adrian Dawkins’ big play potential.

“Ed Sanders has matured both on and off the field, while Travis Campbell is getting stronger and we expect him to compete for a position.”

TigHT ends“Tight end is another very strong position. We have three

fifth-year seniors. Two of our seniors, John Rehberg and Kenny Schmidt, started nearly every game last year. They compete everyday and should have great senior years.

“Michael Finch has bounced back and forth from tight end and offensive tackle and has done a nice job. Dale Knuth is bouncing back from his previous injuries and is running very well.”

OffensiVe lineMuhammad Abdullah returns for the 2007 campaign

after missing the previous year. “Frank Lietke has been a leader of the group for a long

time and had a good off-season as did Merrick Steele. Ryan Cue is a returning all-conference performer while returning starters Chris Ostosh and Ray Rocheleau have made great strides in the weight room.

“They are going to get a lot of competition from Ryan Jonik, David Dunomes and Marc Cuddeback. We have competition at every position which we haven’t had in the past.”

defenseAll four starters in the defensive backfield graduated plus

all four defensive line starters.WSU’s linebacking corps of Alan Guy, Tristan Black and

Prosper Iwu will have to step forward. Andrew Bates, a junior college transfer from Grand Rapids C.C., sat out last year but is slated to start at defensive tackle. Juniors Dante Dunn and Jonathan Klyce have played corner and have also been key contributors on special teams.

linebackers“Tristan Black and Alan Guy both had good off-seasons

in the weight room. They have really gotten stronger and are the added strength will definitely help.

“Prosper Iwu had an outstanding off-season and is making good strides in his conditioning and speed. Adam Nuckols and Matt Shango, who are two big parts of our special teams, will get a chance to compete for a position.Matt Faulkner redshirted last fall and is a middle linebacker who should provide competition.

“I expect really good years out of Tristan, Alan and Prosper.”

defensiVe backs“We have more experience than people understand

because Klyce and Dunn have played a lot of football at corner. They are good players.

“Stan Thornton and Kenny Watson had excellent off-seasons and have given us a lot of confidence they can help us immediately.

“Cornelius Dillard, who was at Illinois, will be expected to compete and help us on special teams.

“We don’t have a lot of experience at safety. Steve Wisniewski was alternating at times. Tigina Mukuna, Brent Wisniewski and Wendell Thompson are all in a position to learn and show what they have.”

defensiVe line“We are thin but we like our players. Andrew Bates was

redshirted in 2006, but gave our offense fits.“Athan Anagonye played as a true freshman. He has

tremendous ability and we expect Athan to step up.“Josh McLean has shown great leadership in the off-

season. Jason Thomas and Nick Grundy have each gotten bigger and stronger, while Alex Jachym has really started to mature into a good football player. Mike Regester is an active defensive lineman from California. We hope he will learn the system quickly and be an impact player.”

special TeaMsChudzinski was selected to numerous All-America

teams and was the first WSU kicker in school history to be All-GLIAC First Team.

“Dave Chudzinski is ‘Mr. Consistency.’ We hope he continues his accuracy as a kicker and to develop as a punter.”

“We only allowed 1.7 yards per punt return last year despite nine GLIAC teams averaging over 10 yards per return. Klyce and Dunn were just awesome as bullets. We should be really good at that again.

“WSU ranked second in the GLIAC in kickoff coverage because Shango, Steve Wisniewski, Nuckols and Shkreli.”

The 2007 edition of Wayne State football could be the most high octane offense in school history with the chance for a big play on every snap.

The Warrior defense will be inexperienced at every position but linebacker but should be improved over the 2006 contingent, while WSU special teams should continue to rank near the top of the conference.

scHeduleThe September 1 conference and season-opener is the

earliest home league opener since 1990.Following the Michigan Tech contest, Wayne State plays

back-to-back road games before returning to Adams Field for a September 22 date with Findlay.

The next week WSU plays in the Fall Classic at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park.

The Warriors begin October with the annual Homecoming match on October 6. Gannon will be making its third trip to Detroit and first as WSU’s Homecoming opposition.

Wayne State again plays back-to-back road contests. The Warriors return home to host Northwood on October 27 before its final regular-season road trip to Ashland for a November 3 match. WSU concludes the regular-season slate at home versus Ferris State on November 10.

Last year Wayne State was ranked ninth in the Northwest Region by the NCAA Division II Football Committee heading into the season finale at Ferris State. The top six in the region qualify for post-season play.

The Wayne State University football team was ranked 21st nationally in the pre-season Division II rankings by Street and Smith.

The Warriors are the third ranked GLIAC school with Grand Valley picked No. 1 and Northwood ranked 14th.

Joique Bell and David Chudzinski were also tabbed to the Street and Smith’s Division II All-America team.
