1 Waterside Retirement Community thewaterside.ca 613.253 .2010 THE  WAVE Y our V! .V A Communit y Newsletter We have a WINNER… 2 nd Annual Apple Bake-off There were a total of 9 entries in this year’s Apple Bake-Off, hosted at the Waterside. This year’s judges included Town Councilor Wendy LeBlanc, EMC reporter Tera Gesner, last year’s winner Faye Smith and two of our Community Members John Lamb and Lillian Robinson. The judges marked the apple desserts based on eye appeal (how good does it look), apple essence (how much apple flavour) and overall taste. After an hour of tasting all the variety of desserts, the votes were tallied by volunteer Donald MacPhail and Lifestyles Coordinator Alison. Community Members joined the taste testing just in time to hear the announcement of the this year’s winner. 1 st place - Apple Crisp by Doreen Harris, 2 nd place - Apple Pie with Caramel Drizzle by Bonnie Adams and 3 rd prize - Apple Dabble Cake by Paula Sanderson. An honorable mention to Jessica Bourgeouis (culinary server) and her apple sauce loaf with apple butter! Other submiss ions included apple fritters, apple turn-overs, German apple cake, and French apple pie. Thank you to all of our apple dessert submitters, we look forward to seeing you next year! Community Placement Students from Notre Dame High School

The kids are back in school and the local high schools are placing co-op students in various business in theCarleton Place area. This year we are delighted to have 3 co-op students complete their 240+ hours here atthe Waterside.

Vicky Cram - Grade 10; will be volunteering in the Culinary department assisting in the dining room.

Brad Santos - Grade 10; will be volunteering with the Environmental Team and getting to know more about themaintenance operations of a retirement community.

Kelsey Ryan - grade 12+; Kelsey has returned to Notre Dame this year to complete the co-op course prior tochoosing her college path. Kelsey will be assisting in the Lifestyles department and focussing on fitness and activities.

Fire Prevention Week October 3rd to October 9th 

During National Fire Prevention week, the Team Members at the Waterside will be practicing fire drills, fire evacuatioand fire extinguisher training provided by our Carleton Place Fire Department.

On Tuesday, October 5th the Team Members will be practicing a fire evacuation drill on the 2nd floor. The fire evacuatiwill involve the Community Members from the 2nd floor at which time they will be asked to be escorted by one of ourTeam Members to a “safe location”.

Please be aware that this is a drill only but is a very important practice for staff in event of a true emergency.We appreciate your cooperation.

Activities For Everyone!The Waterside has many great activities for Community Members to participate in on a daily basis. Last month

was an exceptionally busy month with many events and activities for all to enjoy. Community Members had theopportunity to climb aboard the 1000 Island Boat Cruise in Gananoque. We welcomed the first days of autumnwith a scenic bus trip to Mountain Orchard to go apple picking to prepare for the apple bake-off .

One of our most popular events was the presentation provided by Frank Hitchens “Fly Me to the Moon, theApollo Theory”.

Community Members also participated in National Active Aging Week by being active in our V!VA fit gym.

Pastoral Care WeekOctober 24th to October 30th 

The Waterside Worship service is held everyWednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the V!VAplex  movie theatre. In order to have the serviceprovided to our Members there are a numberof dedicated volunteers. These volunteersinclude our ministers, piano players, cello andviolin players and the vocal accompaniment.

We would like to recognize all our volunteerswho visit us weekly so we can take part in andenjoy a spiritual program provided right herewithin our own community.

On Wednesday, October 27th Waterside willbe hosting our weekly worship volunteers forlunch in the Shores dining room.
