you can imagine what it was like. It runs from about 4pm to 8pm and if you can even give us one hour of your time it would be greatly appreciated. As you all know we lost a great friend and a superlative UNICAN with the passing this past week of Ben DeAngelis. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the wake to take part in our memorial ceremony. It was a great tribute to someone who spent a lifetime giving back to the community through UNICO and many other venues. Thank you all so much. I know the family was deeply touched. I hope to see you all on the 24th.
~ Frank
Happy New Year! Our next Dinner Meeting will be on Tuesday the 24th. Please attend and have a good time. Hopefully the weather will continue to stay unseasonably warm so we will have a good turnout. We will not have a guest speaker that night but our speaking program will resume in February. At our Board Meeting this past Tuesday there was much discussion about our upcoming events, namely the Corned Beef Dinner on March 7, the Scholarship Dinner/Meeting on May 22, the Golf Tournament on June 11th and our 9 0 t h B i r t h d a y Celebration on October 21. We have already started working on all these
events and we will keep you informed on their progress both at our meetings and in this Newsletter. Right now I would especially like to call your attention to the Corned Beef Dinner in March. The tickets will be ready next month and you all will be getting two in the mail. Please make a special effort to sell them or if you would l i k e b u y t h e m yourselves. This is one of our most important fundraisers. Teresa La Barbera, Traffic Reporter for Channel 8 News, has graciously agreed to help us on this occasion. At the risk of sounding like a b r o k e n r e c o r d (me?..... .. ..a broken record?) we need as many "hands" helping at this dinner as we can get. Last year we served around 500 people so

Sad Farewell Benjamin Manfredo DeAngelis, 91, formerly of 655 Wilson Street, passed away peace-
fully on Friday, January 6, 2012 at The Village at East Farms in Waterbury. He was the
beloved husband of Angeline (Spino) DeAngelis, with whom he celebrated a 63rd wed-
ding anniversary in October. Ben was born on October 28, 1920 in Sassinoro, Benevento,
Italy, son of the late Americo and Modestina (Massarelli) DeAngelis. In 1928, Ben trav-
eled to America with his mother and his youngest sister, Mary, to join his father, who
was employed as a cabinetmaker at Scigliano Lumber. Though he spoke no English when
he arrived, Ben was an excellent student and soon distinguished himself academically.
He graduated from Slocum Grammar School at the head of his class in 1935 and from
Crosby High School in 1939, where he was also editor of the school newspaper, "The
Argus". In the fall of 1939, he matriculated at New York University, where he served as
Cadet Captain of the ROTC and graduated with a BS in accounting in 1943. At NYU, he
was awarded the Sherborne Vernon Damerel Memorial Prize for scholarship and interest
in the welfare of his class. After graduation, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant
in the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines during World War II. He was promoted to First Lieutenant during the war and co ntin-
ued to serve in the Army Reserves until 1953. After the war, Ben began a long and distinguished career as an accountant, Busi ness-
man, and teacher. In 1945, he went to work for the accounting firm of Haskins and Sells in New York. He returned to Waterbury in
1947 to take up a teaching position at Post Junior College, where he taught accounting and business courses. From 1967 to 1971, he
served as the Chairman of the Business division at Post, and joined the Post College Board of trustees in 1980. When the Post Col-
lege Foundation was formed, he served as the Chairman of the Investment Committee, and eventually became president of the
Foundation. Post honored his service by dedicating the Benjamin DeAngelis Conference Room in 1990. In 1947, concurrent with h is
duties at Post, Ben started an accounting office with Dr. L. Amidon. Two years later, Benjamin and Guy Nardelli bought out Dr . Ami-
don and founded the firm that eventually was known as DeAngelis, Lombardi, & Kelly, L.L.C. Ben loved his work and was an active
member of several professional organizations, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Connec ticut
Society of CPA's, serving as president of the Waterbury chapter. In 1990, he received a Public Service Award from the AICPA i n
recognition of his dedication. In addition to his professional distinctions, Ben was an energetic participant in numerous civ ic organi-
zations. He was proud to have been president of the Waterbury Chapter of UNICO National, having served on the Board of Direct ors
for years. In October of 1990, UNICO honored Ben's service by making him Waterbury's "Mayor for the Day." Ben was also past
president of the Mt. Carmel Home School Administration, former Treasurer of the Republican Town Committee, former commissioner
of the Waterbury Parking Authority, former Treasurer and President of the University Club of Waterbury, and Treasurer of the
Greater Waterbury Columbus Quincentennial Committee. Late in life, Ben discovered a passion for musical theater. During the
1990s, he appeared in several productions at the Thomaston Opera House, including "The Mikado, Passion, My Fair Lady, H.M.S.
Pinafore, and 1776."
As of January 1st, we had 95 members
in the Waterbury
Chapter. We would
like to increase that
number to at least
100. As we get
ready to celebrate
our 90th Birthday, this is the time to
ask people [friends, family, co workers,
etc.] to join us. If we each bring in at
least one member…...imagine the impact
that would make!
Initiation fee is $120 and an
application can be obtained on our
website at www.waterburyunico.com.
