1890's. In fact, one of Thomas Edison's first short film's was a story that featured an Italian immigrant pickpocket who was called "The Dago." So it started right away and in some manner continues to this day. One of the duties of UNICO is to help educate Americans on the true story of our people and to promote the tremendous contributions Italians have made to this country and the world. Anything we can do to get the word out we should do. The Gathering gives us the opportunity to promote this positive image. While it is a lot of work (especially for the organizers and participants) is my hope we can continue to be part of The Gathering in the future. Yours in UNICO, Frank Travisano First of all I would like to thank all the members (and others) who baked cookies for The GATHERING and also those who traveled to my house on Friday night to package the cookies for sale. It was much hard work but turned into a fun time on Friday and the camaraderie was great. It made for a successful event on Saturday and we made well over $200.00 which was far and away more than we made last year. We also garnered much good will and gained a couple of potential new members. Thank you again bakers of UNICO! I'd like to put a last minute pitch in for the Scholarship Dinner. If any of you late deciders now want to attend please call our Chairman Bob Gerace at 203-592-8785 and he will fit you in. We also elect officers for the coming year at this event which replaces our regular dinner meeting. If you've never been to this event you should attend. It is the highlight of our year and it is always a wonderful time. To get back to The Gathering, I think it is an important event for any Italian organization to participate in. When I joined UNICO in 2000 one of the reasons was to help promote a positive image of Italian Americans. During the 1990's I became increasingly aware that many Americans had a very limited understanding of whom we are as a people. Their views were shaped by old prejudices and stereotypes without any knowledge of our culture and history. All they knew was what they saw and heard in movies, on television and in popular culture. These stereotypes and the prejudice started as soon as Italians started immigrating to this country in large numbers in the Waterbury UNICO PO Box 933, Waterbury, CT 06721 http://www.WaterburyUNICO.com [email protected] Piazza UNICO http://www.piazzaunico.us May 2015 WATERBURY CHAPTER UNICO NATIONAL MONTHLY NEWSLETTER Information for newsletter can be sent to [email protected]!
