October 7th: “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day”

Starring: Frances McDormand, Amy Adams, Shirley Henderson

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Art/Foreign Running Time: 93 min.

MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for some partial nudity and innuendo)

This 1930’s period piece is an excellent romantic comedy. Amy Adamsis a chanteuse in London right before World War II who is playing threesuitors off one another to further her ambition to star in a West Endmusical. Enter Miss Pettigrew, a governess who has been fired from onetoo many jobs and who is happy to serve as the singer’s social secretary, even if she doesn’t know what that entails.

October 14th: “Young @ Heart”

Director: Stephen Walker

Genre: Documentary Running Time: 107 min.

MPAA Rating: PG (for some mild language and thematic elements)

The movie’s subject—a chorus of old people who sing rock classics—might make for a ghastly "celebration of life," but this nicely-donedocumentary probes deeper. It’s uplifting, but doesn’t try to hide thefrailties and fears of singers whose average age is around 80. DirectorStephen Walker isn’t trying to kid anybody that the autumn of life ishappy-go-lucky. Still, it’s both exhilarating and moving to hear 92-year oldEileen Hall belt out the Clash’s "Should I Stay or Should I Go."

October 21st: “The Life Before Her Eyes”

Starring: Uma Thurman, Evan Rachel Wood, Gabrielle Brennan

Genre: Drama, Thriller Running Time: 90 min.

MPAA Rating: R (for violent and disturbing content, language & drug use)

Tuesday at the Movies Most movies contract uponreflection. This movie expands.Uma Thurman plays a collegeteacher, a wife, and a motherhaunted by a school shooting shewitnessed 15 years before. EvanRachel Wood, who is nothingshort of extraordinary, plays thesame character as a teenage girlat the time of the tragedy.Thoroughly thought through andphotographed with imaginationand psychological insight, this is afilm of emotional sophisticationand humanity, something to seeand discuss and ponder for daysto come.

October 28th: “Forgetting Sarah

Marshall”

Starring: Jason SegelKristen BellMila KunisRussell Brand

Genre: Comedy

Running Time: 112 min.

MPAA Rating: R (for sexualcontent, language, and somegraphic nudity)

Jason Segel did himself aremarkable favor when he wrotethis film for himself about a guyrecovering (very, very slowly) fromlosing the best girl he ever had.The movie comes to an idealmoment, when male-orientatedromantic comedies are big, andthis one is lots of fun, with lots oflaughs and good observationsabout relationships and theirfracture points.

"The Clay Bird (Matir Moina)” (2002)Friday, October 24th,

7:30 p.m., Clipper Club

Country: East Pakistan/BangladeshLanguage: Bengali, with English Subtitles

Genre: Drama/Run Time: 98 min.Rating: NR (some violence)

This movie, directed by Tarenque Masud, portrays atime of great turmoil among Muslims. Although thetheme is familiar, this story of East Pakistan’s struggleto establish an independent identity actually takesplace thirty-five years ago, and the tension, confusion, and contradictions of that experience are shownthrough the life of one family. Instead of a broadcanvas, the director has created a small gem, a tableaufull of the understated details that build up a picture ofpersonal and village life under pressure. The title, "TheClay Bird," is a reference to the mystical singers whopop up at key moments in the film to deliver poetic linesof music.

E-Waste EventWe will be holding our annual E-Wastecollection event at Watergate inJanuary, so keep in mind that you can get rid ofold TVs, computers, or other electronicequipment then.

The company, ElectronicWaste Management, is alsonow accepting microwaves, andfor a small fee, florescent bulbs.

If you wish to get rid of any of this hazardouswaste sooner, there is a list of local recyclers onthe StopWaste.org website or in their RecyclingGuide.

Commonly-AskedRecycling Question

QUESTION: Emeryville only recycles narrow-neck plastic bottles numbered 1 and 2. Is there away I can recycle those numbered 3-7?

ANSWER: Probably not. It’s safe to say thatplastics with the resin code 3-7 are not recyclableand should be avoided by consumers, says MarkMurray, executive director of Californians AgainstWaste. No plastics are truly recyclable back intothe same type of container they were before, dueto the chemical properties of plastics. Plastics #1and some #2 are recyclable into second-orderproducts, like plastic for picnic tables and decks. With the exception of a few model programs likethat of Stonyfield Farms and Recycling "whichturns used #5 yogurt cups into recycledtoothbrushes and razors," there is almost nodomestic market for plastics #3-7. Whenmunicipalities do accept the higher numberedplastics, its often because they are underpressure from the public to take them. In mostcases, higher numbered plastics are bundledtogether and shipped overseas to developingcountries where they may be burned as boilerfuel (which generates toxic air pollution), orsimply dumped into unregulated landfills.

In memory of

Shirley Reaves Mother, Grandmother, Watergate Resident, Realtor, Friend

It is with unparalleled sadness and sense of loss that Watergate Sales Company joins with the

Watergate Community in grieving the passing of Shirley Reaves.

An avid swimmer most of her life, Shirley loved Watergate. She served the community in an

exemplary fashion, living here for over a third of her life. Shirley worked on committees and

contributed her focused, legally trained mind to solve problems, and produce solutions in

difficult situations. Her caring and attention to detail permeated every aspect of her life and are

wonderful examples for all of us.

In her son’s recent passing, Shirley showed one and all her supporting, generous, and caring

nature, especially to her surviving daughter and grandson. All of us at Watergate Sales bore

happy witness to her wonderful example as a gracious and adventurous grandmother – for

example, taking family and friends out to the ball game to see the A’s, one of her most beloved

pastimes.

As a real estate agent, Shirley set the high Water(gate) mark for service, fairness, and

professionalism. You could always believe in what Shirley said. She didn’t slow down in her

career even when she passed her eightieth birthday - on the contrary, she simply teamed up with

her fellow Watergate Sales agent, Vincent O’Connell, and thus worked her professional magic in

stride and with a great partner.

Outspoken, reasonable, understanding, professional. A fine lady who was an example to our

community, living at Watergate a full, rich, and well-vested life.

The staff and Agents of Watergate Sales and Watergate Property Management have been proud

to work and play with Shirley Reaves. Her colleagues, her friends, her Watergate community -

we all will miss her.
