Wauchope High School U15’s Girls
win State Final against Sarah
Redfern High
The Wauchope U15’s girl’s rugby team defeated Sarah Redfern High School 30-12 on Wednesday August 28 at Forshaw
Rugby Park in Sydney to become NSW Combined High Schools state champions. Led brilliantly by Captain Taylor Long the
Wauchope girls gave their absolute all to win the state title. Runners up last year the girls were keen to go one better and
played their absolute hearts out in a very physical encounter.
Wauchope opened the scoring through a brilliant 70m individual effort from Chloe Houseman. Chloe playing at fly half went
the blind from a scrum, beat two and then set sail for the line. She was unstoppable. WHS 5 Sarah Redfern 0. Wauchope’s
second try was a superb team try. The ball was passed from the scrum by Sheridan Ratko to Chloe Houseman to Taylor
Long who straightened the attack and took the ball to the line. Taylor put the ball in space and Georgia Williams hit the ball at
pace and went straight through. Georgia stepped the fullback and was over for a try that any rugby team in the world would
be happy to score.
Sarah Redfern came back at the girls and scored two late first half tries. The score at half time was 10-12 to Sarah Redfern.
Sarah Redfern was a much bigger team and had a lot of the ball. The Wauchope girls just kept knocking them over again
and again and again. All the girls tackled their hearts out. A special mention to Georgia Williams, Sheridan Ratko, Kitiara
Porter and Georgia Malcolm who saved Wauchope on numerous times with a never say die attitude.
With 15 minutes to go and with Captain Taylor Long, Maree Tout and Chloe Houseman off the field due to injury Wauchope
were still down 10-12. Georgia Malcolm made a break down the left hand side of the field and the ball somehow made its
way to Daina Hilan. Daina beat one and then skirted the sideline with millimetres to spare. She swerved past the fullback and
was over for a game changing try.
Rugby is very much a team sport and it requires everyone to do their job. Jess Cochrane, Ocean Lee Cole, Breanna Allan,
Kitiara Porter, Samantha Porter, Samantha Mead, Evanee Unwin, Maree Tout, Sara Lucas and German exchange student
Sophie Sohns did a lot of tough stuff at the tackle area. They cleaned out the bigger defence and drove Wauchope forward at
every opportunity. They tackled, tackled, tackled and then tackled some more and just kept on charging into the huge de-
fence. The intensity they played with was at times frightening.
With Wauchope up 15-12 Georgia Malcolm took matters into her own hands and burst through the tiring Sarah Redfern de-
fence and outsprinted the defence for another try. Sarah Redfern to their credit kept coming at us. They were about 40m’s
from our line when Georgia Williams picked up a loose ball. She ran straight through a couple of defenders and had the full-
back to beat. Georgia zigged when the girl thought she was going to zag. She zagged when the girl thought that she was
going to zig. It was awesome. The poor fullback didn’t know what to do. Georgia wrong footed her and set sail for the line.
Try time. We were up 25-12 and the game was ours.It didn’t stop Wauchope though, they were hungry for more. Georjean
Davison took the ball in her own 22 and brushed off about 5 defenders. She passed the ball onto the ever present Sophie
Sohns who put her head down and her bum up and charged forward. Sophie passed the ball onto Sheridan Ratko who
stepped and swerved past a couple. She had one player to beat. She tried to go around her and then threw the biggest dum-
my in the history of rugby to absolutely no one. The poor Sarah Redfern girl looked as to who the ball was going to, slowed
down a bit, realised no one was there and by that time Sheridan was gone. Try time and Wauchope were home 30-12.
Even though Wauchope had the game and state title firmly in their hands it was still all go. Samantha Porter the youngest
player in the team was keen for some action. She beat four in a strong run up the middle of the field. One of the last plays of
the day saw Ocean (Pebbles) Lee Cole tackle an opposition player and drive her about 7 metres backwards.Best for Wau-
chope were Georgia Williams, Sheridan Ratko, Georgia Malcolm, Chloe Houseman, Georjean Davison, Taylor Long and
Jessica Cochrane. All players contributed to a gutsy team performance.
The Wauchope U15’s girls have had a wonderful season. They defeated Macksville High School 32-5, Port Macquarie High
School 37-0, Casino High School 46-15, Wagga High School 27-15 and Sarah Redfern High School in the final 30-12.The
team was open to all who wanted to play but most importantly trained. 24 girls played for the team during the year and each
contributed to its success. A huge thank you to our Captains Zoe Blair and Taylor Long, our managers Teresa Cochrane and
Shai Bower, our ball boys Jacob McGrath and Bailey Farr, our ever present bus driver Shayne Bromfield, our defence coach
and gear steward Greg Healy and our assistant gear stewards Matt Goddard and Jake Bell.
Special mention to Nicole Gough our Deputy Principal who attended our semi-final and final both in Sydney and Graham
Sonter from the Australian Rugby Union who ran a number of training sessions for the girls. Also a huge thanks to all our
supporters who travelled to places such as Coffs Harbour, Penrith and Sylvania Waters. We couldn’t have done it without
you.

The second Excellence Assembly for 2013 was held last
week. The presentation of awards to 120 students for their
academic excellence was interspersed with some entertain-
ment from the dance and drama faculties of the school.
Year 11 students Teresa Cochrane and Sharee Patrick per-
formed a powerful dance, named NAIDOC, which combined
elements from traditional dance and modern styles. Year 11
drama performed an absurd theatre piece, Life in a Box,
Year 8 students Samantha Alford- Wood and Brianna Harris
performed Catch Me and Stephanie Hallam performed one
of her imaginative solos.
Willis Thompson provided reflections from his recent tour of
significant historic sites of conflict in SE Asia (including Sin-
gapore and Vietnam ). The scholarship was awarded to Wil-
lis by the Dept of Education and Communities (linked to the
RSL) as a result of his excellent entry into an ANZAC Day
competition for school students.
Congratulations to all students
and staff who helped make this
assembly a huge success and
to the students who earned
their awards.
