Welcome to the rst issue o We Do. We hope youenjoy the articles and photography.ve already been asked why? As in why another wedding

magazine, the market must be saturated. Maybe it is, likelyt is not.

Te premise o most magazines o this nature is to

spouse inormation rom the editors point o view or

n some cases sta writers. Our premise, let the vendors,

dvertisers and even the brides write the articles and tips.

Mostly these stories or how tos will be based on their

xperiences and knowledge. Where this is not possible our

writers and experts will step in to ll the pages. Either way,

ou, the reader will benet.Te second premise or our magazine is to showcase local

rea vendors. Each issue will contain at least one eatured

endor. We Do will not review or make recommendations

o any vendor. In our experience this only evolves to a

unch o reviews that are meaningless and o no real use

o you. Te reason, we dont know the vendors like you do.

No, we will instead, aer the rst issue, oer our readers

he opportunity to oer their positive experiences with the

    endors they use.

We will be oering our readers a showcase o images,

ach submitted by local photographers, o their avourite

hots. Tese will be their avourites rom the month, year

r just simply their best liked. Aer all, your photographs

re the only memories rom your ceremony that will

withstand all other memories. Tey are the only keepsake,

ther than your spouse or children, that you will be able

    o hold.

We Do Magazine welcomes your eedback. We take

ll our eedback, good or constructive, seriously. Anyecommendations you oer that will help us improve your

xperience will be initiated, well, within reason.

As time permits, we will have a website and a blog, or

ow we are busy working on the next issue and nishing

ther commitments. Our nal commitment is to you, our

eaders. We Do wants to be the go to inormation source

    or all your wedding needs.

Enjoy our rst issue, we hope it helps you with your

    wedding plans. Let us know.D

    CHOOSE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

    WISELY

Aer the whirlwind is over, your wedding photos are the ultimate souvenirrom your wedding day. Beautiul photos will last a lietime, making alittle bit o research and preparation a key part o your wedding planning.

Its all about looking abulous in print, having un with your photo shootsand above all, making sure you choose the right photographer or you.

Te First 80%: Whats important to you? Te rst thing that you have to do is decidehow important your wedding pictures are to you. For me, the images will be with youorever, and nding someone whos style you truly love is an incredibly important thing.Find someone that you LOVE not just someone that you like. I you do this you will be80% o the way to being elated with the results.

Will they deliver? Once youve decided whose work you love (and there is sure tobe more than one) go through their portolios and look or consistency in the work. rueproessionals deliver on their style over and over without ail. Every set looks like theybelong to same artist. I a photographer is constantly changing their style or the way theirimages look, youll never know what youre images will look like until youve receivedthem.

Te First meeting. Te rst time you and your uture husband or wie to be met upyou were checking them out and looking at the details. Do they t my style and personality?

Are they un, serious, or a perect blend o the two? Do I eel comortable or nervous? All othese thoughts are things that should be considered when meeting potential photographers. You will spend more time with this person than any other vendor that you choose or yourday, so you want to mesh well.

Te Contract. Although most o us loath dealing with contracts and the legal stu, this is a big investment and you need to know that youre going to be taken care o. ake thetime to go through the photographers contract, and ask questions i anything is unclear.

Tere should be items that cover you i something happens to go wrong, and also pointsthat are there to ensure that the photographer will be able to do their best work also. Makesure that the deliverables are clearly called out. I they dont have a contract or you to gothrough then my advice is to walk away or be very honest with yoursel about the potentialrisks.

Te Gear and equipment are important to understand rom a back-up point o view. What they use is important but will not tell you i they will do a good job. Great photosare a result o the photographernot the camera. ALL proessionals have at least two oeverything, and sometimes, three or our. Tis includes the basic gear that is required.Anything less will mean that any gear ailure will certainly impact your day and yourphotos. Its also important to touch on the digital les and how they are backed up aerthe day is done. Make sure that there are multiple backups and at least one system that isnot at the photographers studio... just in case.

    JUST SAYIN!

Grooms, what exactly arethey doing? Everyone has arole in the wedding, except

he groom. You are just expected tohow up and say the proper wordsikely written or dictated by your

ride-to-be) and not be yoursel. When did the grooms onlyesponsibility become to moan abouthe cost o everything and not havenput in planning? At the risk ocking o every groom and everyride out there, Id say orever!

I you as a groom dont want to havehe suckiest band/dj, transportationr meal, speak up! Again, probably

cking o every bride going, neverhe less, onward we orge.Have you heard the average band

ut there? Have you seen youreransportation? Do you know whatoure going to be eating? I you arehe average groom, you might be able

to answer yes to only one o thesequestions. Most grooms t in thebelow average category.

I know, planning a wedding isgenerally le up to the bride, hermother, her riends and the myriad o

people she will seek advice rom overa very long period o time. From aguys perspective it gets a little tedious, not to mention what your riends willsay i they ever ound out you werehelping plan your own wedding.WH!

So, are you a groom or a man? Areyou getting involved or not?

Heres what can happen. For all the

brides out there that will read this,no oence intended. You could endup with a DJ that only plays 80s lovesongs, ok i youre a Bee Gees an. Youcould be travelling the day in a bigstretch limo owned by a puritan whodoesnt believe in music or drinking.

You might be eating chicken divanwith cress salad. Are these things thatyou really want?

Unortunately, etiquette dictatesthat you dont have much to say onany issues, I say, to hell with etiquette

unless youre meeting the Queen.GE INVOLVED!

Planning a wedding is very stressuland your bride-to-be shouldnt bearthe entire burden. Te start o yourmarried lie should be as you plan togo on, together.

Te only bad side to getting certainthings you might want, well, you willhave to sit through paper choices,

invitation mock-ups, seating lists andall sorts o other not so manly stuthat generally only the brides-maidswould get to enjoy. Just sayin SUCKI UP! Have un with this, it onlyhappens once!

Have you heard the old axiom less, is more.

We hear it all the time, we see it all the time.

Having been to hundreds o events and receptionsover the past ew years, the old truths become even

    more relevant.

The most obvious place where this applies is to

decorating or staging your event. Youve all been

there, the anticipation when you walk into the

venue, thoughts o a beautiully decorated hall or

a wedding reception or anniversary. You enter and

your eyes dont know where to look. There is so

much that even the largest o details alls to the

sheer volume o items in the room. The impact you

expect is lost. The ooohs and ahhs turn to question

marks as your guests lter the multitude beore

them. Now, Im not saying this is wrong, just maybe

    over the top a bit.

Great designers and decorators dont always

agree on the themes you should use, but they do

agree that more oten than not, a bold statement

can be made simply and elegantly with very ew

embellishments to a room.Where do you start when the eect you want is

difcult to create in this day o saturating a room

with stu. You should be hiring a proessional. There

are several outstanding rms in the St. Johns area

that can create exactly the type o impact you want.

Most decorators/designers will oer a ree

consultation and We Do suggests you take

advantage o these sessions. They will be short and

will not likely result in an overall plan, but you will

get to know the people behind the scenes and canbetter decide on a good t or your ideas.

Will a decorator/designer stop you rom using

some o your most cherished items, not likely.

They will help integrate the items into the overall

design so they can be viewed properly. This is what

proessionals do, this is where their experience

    benets you.

Several decorating rms rom St. Johns have

submitted photos as examples o how elegance

does not have to be garish and overdone, scroll

over their logos, click and visit the sites or more

beautiul designs. Over the coming issues, each will

    be eatured.

Watch or eatures on individual rms in upcoming

issues o We Do, You wont want to miss them.

    W H O S C H I L D I S T H I S ?

Children, a hit and miss when it comes to weddings. We all love children, we are all notused to the little ones being around or long stretches o time. Te question is then, do youwant children at your reception? Tere are a ew dynamics that will aect your decision, all

reasonable and none to easy to get around should you decide on an adult day.Do you have a lot o guests travelling to help you celebrate? Do you have guests that have newborns

and cant leave them behind? What is the age cuto or adulthood in your amily, legal, ourteenor twelve?

I you decide that children are not allowed, be rm, but respectul. Explain to your guestspersonally. Be consistent though, you do not want to insult anyone by having some children there

and not others.I you have decided that children are to attend, be considerate o others in your celebration. Hirean attendant to look afer the children, yes, they actually have services or that. Provide a goodie bagor special table with coloring books, paper, crayons and maybe some quiet toys.

Children, most anyway, preer simple meals. I have not met a child yet that knows what to do withBee Wellington or Chicken Cordon Suisse. Provide kid riendly meals like Mac & Cheese, ChickenFingers and so on. ry to ensure that the children are served rst, their parents will appreciate thehot meal.

I you are guest bringing your children be considerate o your hosts and other guests. Feed your

children beore hand, make sure they are rested and more than anything else coach them on theirbehavior.

O BLOG...n this age o technology, more and more bridese choosing to use a blog or everything rom

nnouncements and invitations to thank youotes. We Do has some thoughts.

How many o you have used this particularedium, has it worked or you? Weve seen it both

ays, worked and not so much.Tere are certain considerations

you need to take into account beoreyou embark on this journey. Terst, probably the most important, istime. Ensure you will have enough.

Te biggest downall to most blog brides is thathey are inconsistent. Blog posts do not need to berequent, just consistent. I you set out to updateour blog once a week, do it once a week. Peoplere conditioned very quickly to expect a posting.

People are also prone to orget quickly when theydo not see a regular post. Consistency is the key.

Te second, consider your expected guest list.re the majority o your guests expected to traveleat distances to your ceremony? What is the ageoup? Are you in an area where communication

y internet is consistent and reliable. I your guestse mostly out o town, blogging is a great way tommunicate. Quick, efcient and you can saveortune on mail and long-distance charges. Youill have to keep track o all your announcements, ere will be guests who are either not computervvy or do not have access to internet, yep still

appens. Tese you will have tontact by more conventional means.

o, now that we have the answers toe above questions we can start.

You should start your blog at theeginning. I realize that sounds a little strange. Bye beginning I mean when you become engaged.

rogress through your steps in an orderly ashionnd as much as you would like to try not to gethead o yoursel. Announce events as you doem. Te next logical progression aer the

ngagement announcement would be the date oe wedding. Save the Date announcements are

ecoming increasingly popular. I think you get theea her.

Once you have established all your bookingsnd everything is conrmed, by all means, make

that most special announcement. Your DAY, yourEVEN, your EXRAVAGANZA or however youwish to portray the type o day you wish or yourwedding.

At this point you will have completed severalactivities. You may have an engagement session

with the photographer, discuss posting a ew(not all) o your photos. You may be deciding ona menu and havent quite got it pegged. Ask yourreaders to help by providing menu choices theycan vote on. Ask your readers to comment on yourblog with ideas or music selection, kissing games or even decor ideas. Some readers may know where to getsomething you have looking or and

would be more than happy to have alittle input. Keep your readers engaged.

Now youve announced everything, includedas many people as you possibly could and yourmarried. Should you stop there? Hmmmmm?

Why not keep this going a little longer. Areyou honeymooning? Post a ew times to let yourreaders know you are enjoying yourselves.

Planning a amily? A blog ts right in withamilies. Posts o the expectant couple, children, pets and amily lie.

No one has ever said that a wedding should stopaer the wedding, dont be shy, your readers (amilyand riends) will continue to ollow everything youdecide is important.

Tere are a ew things you should keep in mindwhile blogging. Security is always an important

issue and as such there are things you should neverpublish. Never publish addresses (yours or guests).Never publish phone numbers, i theyare needed send private messages.Never publish your guest list. Ensurethat your privacy settings are secureand set to only approved guests/readers.Tere are several great blog sites out there,

Wordpress and Blogger, just to name two. Facebookcan also be used or events.

    Happy writing everyone!

THE OUT OF THE BOX BRIDE

    R

emember when you were small; you dreamed

o a big white wedding, hundreds o people

celebrating that one true love you spent youre... till now, searching or. Tere was a church lined

ith stain glass windows, and the wedding march

ayed as you walk down the aisle. Your dress is owing

nd white, while your best riends in the whole world

and next to you in dresses that match perectly. Tis

what I call the traditional bride. Te Bride who will

an their wedding with rules in mind, ollowing the

aditions we grew up thinking to be the only way to

an a wedding.oday, not every bride-to-be dreams o walking down

e aisle in a uy white dress. Te Web has opened our

es to limitless possibilities on how you can celebrate

e big day with the people you cherish. We see all

ese wedding articles and blogs lled with stunningly

nique ideas, held in exotic locations, and decorated

ith props you couldnt even athom nding here on

ur little island. Your heart utters at the thought oepping outside the box; but the question remains,

uld this be done in Newoundland?

y answer to you is yes. Te weather is questionable

ut the tools are here! And breaking tradition is

    othing to be araid o.

    Te Gown:

ck the style that says something about you and that

so compliments the overall look o the wedding you

ave envisioned. I you have a vintage eel, say yes toe dress you all in love with and make additions

erward. Tis way you can use them during certain

arts o the day and excluded them in others. For

ample a piece o lace used in just a ew o your

hotography ops artistically and then put it away.

    ridesmaids:

Tere are no rules! In most cases your bridesmaids

ill not be identical twins, and the hardest part oopping or their dresses is nding the one that makes

em all eel comortable, and look great in ront o

your guests. Suggestions are... choose dierent

lors and/or styles or each o them, such as primary

lors with a rainbow theme, or a slightly dierent

shade in the same color that can

    create contrast in your photos

and depth at alter. Or choosematching dresses or them all,

but the maid o honour can

    have a slightly dierent version.

    Photo ime:

    One o the most important

parts o your big day is the

    time aer the ceremony and

beore the reception, which I aectionately reer to

as photo time! Where will you go to do your photos, and what can you do to make them dierent? Your

photographer is usually a wealth o knowledge on this

topic. Tere are the common locations and then there

are the diamonds in the ru. Te locations you never

would have thought in a million years would even be

in the running. Sometimes a simple clearing with a

tree line can be amazing with the right props. All you

need is a truck to get it there.Te Details:

A huge portion o many couples budgets are spent on

center pieces, guestbooks, table displays and o course

with all the details a wedding requires the list can go

on! And the sad part is, that once your wedding is

done you have all this stu bought and paid or with

no where to put it. Te simplest objects can make

the most eye catching details! I you decorate your

wedding in your personal style, those items will serveyou much longer than one day!

And so... with all that said, and so much more to cover

I will or now leave you with this Your wedding is

the one day and event you will take months and

even sometimes years to plan. But even more, it is a

gathering o everyone you hold dear brought together

in celebrating your true ound happiness with your

one true love. Tis Special day is a statement o youboth collectively as people. Your personal style and the

style to hope to urther develop in the years to come

should be displayed. So do it the way you dream it!
