By CHRISTY LYNN

ADDISON COUNTY — Beth Marr has been planning weddings and events for more than 25 years.

Now the owner of Almost Home Market in Bristol, Marr got her start by working in the restaurant business, then moved on to become an event planner for some of the regions’ most popular wedding sites.

A native of Louisiana, Marr fell in love with New England following a trip to Cape Cod with a former partner and was determined to move north. After a brief time on the Cape, Marr moved to Vermont, where she has lived ever since.

She worked as an event planner at Bolton Valley Resort for eight years and then moved on to spend 14 years as Basin Harbor Club’s event planner.

In 2011 Marr and her partner, Gary Smith, started Almost Home Market, bringing to it more than 40 years of collective experience in the catering and hospitality industry as well as a love for cooking and baking.

In addition to preparing daily deli items, baked goods and specialty foods, the market on North Street in Bristol offers gourmet catering for large functions like weddings.

Marr continues to work as a wedding and

events planner in addition to managing the market. She works both as an independent consultant as well as part-time as a planning consultant for the Middlebury Inn, whose wedding packages include planning services.

In Marr’s opinion, bringing a consultant into the wedding planning process is really about hiring someone to take care of the small details.

“It’s like having an insurance policy for your wedding day,” she says. “It offers you a piece of mind and opportunity to stop thinking about the details and make sure you can enjoy the day.”

As most people know who have either planned a wedding or have been closely connected to someone planning a wedding, there are many large and small details and a lot of balls in the air at once.

“For most people, getting married is a really big deal. People want it to be this, that and the other thing, but mostly they want it to be theirs and they want it to be great,” Marr says.

Envisioning everything all at once is overwhelming for most people because they haven’t done it before. For Marr, with hundreds of weddings under her belt, she knows what pieces might be easily forgotten and where most people get into trouble. Partly because of

her experience and partly just by nature, she’s not easily rattled and can roll with the punches.

“A wedding planner has to be level-headed and have a calm-as-a-cucumber disposition,” she says. “Over the years I’ve learned what kinds of mishaps to expect. At this point, I don’t JHWÁXVWHUHGZKHQDELUGJRHVWRWKHEDWKURRPon the tablecloth, I just swap it out.”:KHQVKHÀUVWPHHWVZLWKDZHGGLQJSDUW\

Marr says she starts by determining the key players.

“A good wedding planner should be able to ascertain who’s making the decisions and ZKR·V DORQJ IRU WKH ULGHZLWKLQ WKHÀUVW KRXUof meeting,” she says. From there, it’s about exposing the most important elements for each of those parties.

“Sometimes it’s the bride, sometimes it’s the groom, sometimes it’s the parents, or grandparents, or sometimes someone else, but it’s important to expose the most meaningful details to each of those key players to make everyone understands their value and part in the event,” Marr says.

Another early factor Marr ascertains is to what extent her services as a planner are needed in each event. Sometimes she is hired just for the day of the wedding, for the wedding couple that wants to plan most of the details themselves and only is looking for help with the details on the day of the event.

“It’s great when people want to take care

ADDISON COUNTYSummer Weddings GETTING TO THE DETAILS

(BPT) — What does the concept of a

wedding theme mean to you? Do you think

it’s just about the colors you choose for your

bouquet and bridesmaid gowns? Or do you

think of it as something grander — your

personalized stamp that should shine through

every aspect of your big day?

“Even the most romantic, unique theme

can fail to live up to its potential if you only

incorporate it into one or two aspects of your

wedding,” says Robin Brockelsby, founder

of Creative Coverings, one of the largest

nationwide linen rental and sales companies.

“Truly successful themes grace everything

your guests do, see and touch throughout your

wedding and reception.”

As you’re planning your wedding, keep

these theme-building tips in mind:

&KRRVHDWKHPHDQGFRORUVWKDW\RXORYHenough to invest some creativity in. While

each season, certain colors emerge as “hot”

choices for weddings, avoid picking a color or

theme just because it’s trendy. Instead, focus

on ideas that truly speak to your personality.

3LFNLQJDZHGGLQJFRORUGRHVQ·WPHDQ\RXhave to be limited to just one shade. For example,

Brocklesby points out, purple is a trending color

for weddings this year, and you can incorporate

variances of it throughout your wedding.

“Lighter shades like lavender and lilac are

more feminine and sensitive, creating a mood

of romance,” she says. “They’re a great choice

for bridesmaids’ gowns.”

Add interest to the color theme by using

darker shades like plum or deep purples for table

linens and even lighting elements. “Using these

darker shades can create an impression of magic,

fantasy or extravagance,” Brocklesby says.

,I\RXGRFKRRVHDWUHQGLQJFRORUFRQVLGHUrenting accessories such as linens, chair covers

and decorations. Rental stores keep track of

what’s trendy, too, and are more likely to have

items in the season’s hottest colors. Often,

it’s easier to rent what you need than to hunt

through multiple stores trying to purchase

items.

:KHQFKRRVLQJDWKHPHEHVXUHWRFRQVLGHUif it really works with that gown you fell in

love with and simply must have. For example,

a vintage theme cries out for a vintage gown

and a dress that is too contemporary will clash

with the theme. Tuxedoes for groomsmen and

stiletto heels for bridesmaids aren’t likely to

work well with a beach theme.

sophisticated, elegant wedding as you walk

down the aisle, but you might want to leave

the hip-hop for the reception. For a holiday
