Pastor’s Poetry Post-Its

Today’s poem by Natasha Trethewey is entitled “The Serving Girl at Emmas” or “La Mulata” and is based on the painting adorning our bulletin cover this week. Another copy hangs in our Dominican dining room or refectory at Holy Innocents. Today’s Gospel of the encounter on the road to Emmaus focuses our attention in this Easter season on the Eucharist — our Paschal Sacrament. We are told in the Gospel that the eyes of the apostles who didn’t recognize Jesus on the road, were opened in amazement at the breaking of the bread at the supper table. The 17th century painting by Diego Velàsquez acknowledges that someone had to bake that bread and prepare the meal, during which the apostles realized that their guest was the Risen Jesus Himself. The Emmaus story reminds us to pray at Mass that we too would recognize Jesus as we break bread in the Eucharist each week. Velàquez and Ms. Trethewey challenge us to acknowledge those who bake our bread, prepare and produce our food which become the Body and Blood of the Risen Christ. Every Sunday is an Easter Sunday. The Real Presence is a real and powerful Emmaus encounter.

Kitchen Maid with Supper at Emmaus, or The Mulata

—after the painting by Diego Velàquez

She is the vessels on the table before her: the copper pot tipped toward us, the white pitcher clutched in her hand, the black one edged in red and upside down. Bent over, she is the mortar and the pestle at rest in the mortar—still angled in its posture of use. She is the stick of bowls and the bulb of garlic beside it, the basket hung by a nail on the wall and the white cloth bundled in it, the rag in the foreground recalling her hand. She’s the stain on the wall the size of her shadow— the color of blood, the shape of a thumb. She is echo of Jesus at table, framed in the scene behind her: his white corona, her white cap. Listening, she leans into what she knows. Light falls on half her face.

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER April 15, 2018

First Reading: Acts 3:13-15, 17-19

Peter reminds the people that they allowed Jesus to be killed, and preferred to allow a murderer to be released. But God raised him from the dead as had been prophesied. Therefore, all people should believe and turn to God, that their sins might be forgiven. Second Reading: I John 2:1-5a

Jesus was offered up for the sins of the world. The only way to prove true faith in Him, is to honor his commandments; anyone who claims to believe, yet does not keep his word, does not truly believe. Gospel: Luke 24:35-48

Jesus appeared to two disciples, though at first they feared he was a ghost. Jesus ate with them to prove he was not a ghost. He explained that he had fulfilled the prophet’s words about him. He also explained that in his name they must preach doing penance for the

forgiveness of sins.

For the Easter 2018 liturgies, we introduced a new hymn, New Creation, by Jackie Francois. We are including it in this week’s music program as our Offertory hymn since its theme of Resurrection is so appropriate during the Easter season. Jackie Francois is an American Christian musician, singer, songwriter, guitarist, speaker and youth minister. Jackie was born and raised in Orange County, California, and was a regular attendee at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Placentia, California. Her family is musically talented, and she began singing when she was very young. She learned how to play violin and then guitar. During her Freshman year of high school, Jackie was introduced to Life Teen which is a Catholic youth ministry organization. Life Teen believes that “Eucharist-based ministry has the power to transform teens, transform parishes, and transform culture.” Inspired by Pope John Paul II’s call for a new evangelization, Life Teen believes that youth are the key to this new springtime in the church. In June 2003, fellow composer, Tom Booth heard Jackie’s CD and instantly recognized her talent. The Booth family mentored her both spiritually and musically and invited Jackie to sing at major faith events. Jackie’s music and speaking ministry has taken her around the globe showing young men and women of Christ what it is to truly love and be loved by our God. She has a special calling to youth and women’s ministry events. Her message of faith is to be “someone who reminds people of Heaven in the busyness of everyday life” through humor, prayerfulness and song. In Jackie’s blog she states “Christ can and does make all things new. We just need the humility to know that, despite the mistakes we've made, He is still calling us to redemption. We have been created for real love and for real greatness.” Currently Jackie lives in Southern California with her husband and two daughters. She serves the local parish of Santa Clara de Asis in Yorba Linda. “from death to life, I no longer live, but Christ now lives

in me. Clothed in righteousness and crowned with holiness, we are new!”
