Approximate distance: 8 milesGrab a pint at Nye Bevan’s favourite watering hole before moving on to explore the dark tunnels of the Chartist’s cave.

1. The Top house pub (start & end)This is where the walk started and you’ll find it at the top of the village hence the name.

Nye Bevan enjoyed a pint here and his picture takes pride of place above the bar.

4. Garn Fawr CairnThis Bronze Age burial chamber is one of the biggest in Wales.

Climb up the sides carefully for a breath taking panoramic view of the mountains.

This cairn is very evocative and a great place to forget all about the 21st century.

2. The Duke’s tableLocals believe that this circular green mound with an outer stone ring was once a picnic table for the Duke of Beaufort.

Next to the table is a clear spring that never runs dry, even in the harshest summer droughts.

5. The Chartist’s caveArguably one of Wales’ most historic monuments this cave is where workers hid, met in secret and plotted the Chartist’s Uprising.

Watch your step inside and explore the main chamber. Tunnels lead off from it but should be avoided at all costs. These are for professional cavers only!

3. Nye Bevan memorial stoneTake a right here and head for the mountains to do a shorter circular route or head for the trees as we did and follow the old Bryn Ore tram road.

Here you’ll find Nye Bevan’s favourite Welsh view.

6. Trefil quarryWander through Wales’ largest scheduled ancient monument, first opened in 1819 and soak up its Wild West atmosphere.

Keep an eye out for the old tram line sleeper marks in the path. Drop down to the main road and walk back to the Top House pub.
