Kindergarten News – 1/29/18 Letter and Sound of the Week: Dd – Dudley Duck Theme of the Week: Penguins Words of the Week: said, do, will Dear Kindergarten Families: We did some nice story comparisons with The Mitten last week, as well as learned how to read a mitten glyph (symbols) to learn information about someone. Thank you for the really cool endangered animals projects and information. We will be using those later to make a little information booklet. Also thank you for the soap donations. Language Arts: We are beginning a unit on penguins this week and learning how to find information in non-fiction books. This week we practice beginning /d/ sounds and the words said, do, will. Review the letters: S, M, R, T, B, N, H, V, A, C, P, G, F, L, K, I, Q, D Sight Words: I, see, am, a, the, by, my, like, to, can, go, an, and, we, look, no, not, love, at, here, on, this, is, it, you, are, for, have, said, do, will Making Meaning book: Brave Bear - “Juicy” vocabulary words: doubtful, confident, courageous, persistent **I’m sending home an updated sight word list showing the highlighted words your child could read last week. Using flashcards at home and timing how fast they can run through them might be a fun way to practice! Writing We will continue practicing sounding out words and writing our sight words as we make a pattern book about penguins. We took a Grosse Pointe writing test, and your children were able to sit quietly and try to get their thoughts on paper in detailed pictures and words! Math: We continue learning the numbers 11 through 20. Grouping in tens are helpful in adding on to tens to understand our base ten counting system. Try substituting a dime for 10 pennies to show “10 and more.” This week in Stations, the students will “Math the Room,” where they walk around the room with a clipboard, finding adding sentences to solve. Science: Last week your young scientists defied gravity and watched water travel UP. We will document our white carnations in red water, and we will find out what shape water is! Coin Collection – MORE coins needed! We are trying to collect $50 to adopt a penguin from the Detroit Zoo. Anyone have a bank that takes coins without rolling them? Upcoming Dates to Remember: - Fri., Feb. 2 – Send in your Beautiful Baby picture – instructions went home last week. - Mon., Feb. 5 - 100th Day project due - instructions went home last week. Our 100th day of school will be on Friday, Feb. 9th! To celebrate we would love to have the kids dress up like

they are 100 years old. We have included some ideas to help you get started planning what your child will wear.

It is completely optional to participate.

Girls: Printed skirt, pearls, eyeglasses, sweater, wig or curled hairstyle, gray wig, knee high stockings, scarf, etc.

Boys: Button down shirt, flannel shirt, suspenders, tie, eyeglasses, gray wig, etc.
