Dear Parents,We hope that you and your families are well.During this time of unprecedented and uncertain times, some of you may be at home and searching for useful work to keep your children on track. Others may be juggling childcare, work etc. We are very much aware of the pressures and demands of family life and that no two situations will be the same. Whether your time is limited or unlimited, whether you have access to tablet/laptop and wifi or not, please know that reading a little and talking to your children every day will be the single most beneficial thing to them. So whatever you use from the suggested list below, please read with your child (picture books, library books, graded readers if you have them) as often as possible.

Topic – Money
The following activities have been organised bearing in mind that some children and parents may not have access to wifi.
Activity 1 – sorting coins
Use a selection of 1c, 2c and 5c coins. Ask children to sort them according to their value so a bundle of 1c coins, a bundle of 2c coins etc results. Later add some 10c coins and 20c coins. Discuss the coins and monsy during activity.
Suggested questions – Which coin is the smallest/largest?
Which coins are the same colour?
Can you see the value written on the coin?
Which of these two coins is worth more?
How many 1c coins would you swap for 5c coin ? etc
Activity 2 – coin rubbings
Place a coin under a page and hold at each side of coin over the page. Rub over the coin with a crayon or colouring pencil. The imprint of the coin should transfer to the page.
Activity 3 – My Shop
Children to draw 5 or 6 items and label them with prices (try at the moment to keep it to full coin values (eg 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c). Play shop with the shopping list
Suggested questions – How much is the lollipop?
I have 5c. is this enough to buy the flower?
Which coin would you use to buy the pencil?
Activity 4 – Value of coins
Swap coins for coins of equivalent value.
Suggested questions – How many 1c coins can you swap for one 5c coin? etc
What other coins could you swap for 5c?
Activity 5 – Counting money
Count money, firstly with just 1c coins, then 1 and 2c coins and gradually add in the other coins. As your child progresses, it may be useful to point out the skill of beginning with the larger coin and then adding the smaller ones. (Some children will figure this out themselves, for others it is a learned skill).
Activity 6 – Draw money in your purse
7c
6c 6c6c
Draw boxes (similar to above) with a total written in it. Your child adds coins to the box to the value. You may need to remind your child what values coins have (some children may suggest a 3c coin)
Activity 7 – Adding money
Add two coins at a time- in written format this time. Where activity 5 used concrete materials ( the coins), now we are counting the values without the coins
2c + 2c =
5c +2c =
The above activities are based on pages 110 -112 of operation maths book. If you do have wifi access for your child, these pages may be useful as a visual as you go through the activities.
