Steve Jubb, PGADirector, PGA Charities100 Avenue of the ChampionsPalm Beach Gardens, FL 33418

Dear Mr. Jubb:

My name is Andy Betz and I am the Internship Coordinator for the PGA Golf Management Program at North Carolina State University. I am contacting you concerning a possible grant of $30,000 over the course of 3 years from the PGA Foundation to deliver the PGA initiative, Golf: For Business and Life to our juniors, seniors and graduate students. At this point, I have not seen a formal application process through the PGA Foundation. Please accept my proposal as formal application for possible grant monies.

Golf: For Business and Life was offered at North Carolina State University from 2004-2006 and the funds to deliver this beneficial program have been depleted. Our PGA Golf Management Program consists of three (3) full time faculty/staff positions and a student body of over 100 students that are looking for ways to give back to the university and the local community. The PGA Foundation and our PGA Golf Management program are the perfect fit to deliver Golf: For Business and Life to up and coming college graduates. Golf: For Business and Life will teach all participating students about how to utilize the game of golf as a successful business tool in these difficult economic times. North Carolina State University and our PGA Golf Management program have all of the necessary staff and facilities to deliver an educational and informative Golf: For Business and Life program.

Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future to further discuss the possibility of securing grant monies from the PGA Foundation. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,

Andy Betz, [email protected]

Grant for funding Golf: For Business and Life at North Carolina State University

Mission of the PGA FoundationThe PGA Foundation’s priority is to grow the game of golf while using the game to enhance the quality of life of all people, especially for those who are under-served by the game. Directly associated with golf programs are core values such as honesty, integrity, respect, self-assurance, courtesy, and perseverance. Regardless of gender, age, social and economic background, ability or disability, every golfer can experience these values through their involvement in the game (www.pgafoundation.com).

PGA Golf Management programsPGA Golf Management programs developed and operated by institutions of higher education in conjunction with the PGA of America are comprehensive degree programs. These programs provide future PGA members a respected academic major in a field applicable to the golf industry integrated with the specific knowledge and skills of the PGA’s Golf Management Program developed by the PGA. The PGA, based upon a desire to insure a consistent measure of quality in both the process and product, developed specific standards to define the basic criteria required for the organization and approval of all PGA Golf Management programs. Schools with PGA accredited programs accept these standards in concert with those of their other accrediting bodies to guide the organization and operation of the PGA Golf Management programs (PGA of America, 2011).

Golf: For Business and LifeGolf: For Business and Life is a PGA of America college initiative, designed to teach and improve the golf skill of college juniors, seniors and graduate students through instruction provided by PGA Professionals, and to suggest ways in which the students can use golf as a business tool as they enter the professional world. Proper golf instruction is the backbone to the PGA Professionals as education is to the universities. Combining these two institutions and their expertise in an effort to better prepare a student is vital, and has potentially tremendous positive impact to the students, the universities and the PGA of America (www.pgafoundation.com).

Statement of NeedGolf: For Business and Life was offered at North Carolina State University from 2004-2006, but the funding has expired. During the difficult economic times, our department, Parks, Recreation, Tourism Management and the PGA Golf Management budgets do not have the available funds to accommodate this beneficial program (Appendix A). When the program was

run in the past, the University did not have a golf course to call its home. A new golf course has been built on campus in the meantime, the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on the Centennial Campus. The golf course has all of the necessary amenities to accommodate this program. The program was also lacking a PGA Member to assist in the running of the program. At this time, there are five (5) PGA Members associated with the PGA Golf Management program and the Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The program was very well run and successful in the past, but having the PGA Golf Management faculty and students oversee the program will even take it to a higher level of expectations.

Golf: For Business and Life is a 16 week program that would be offered during the Fall Semester with a maximum of 20 students and is designed to teach upper level and graduate level students the game of golf. The class will be a 2 credit hour class and grading will be pass/fail taught through North Carolina State University. Class sessions will follow the 16 week layout created by the PGA of America. Class sessions will take place in the following areas throughout the course of the semester: Carmichael Gym Golf Room, Lonnie Poole Golf Course and Driving Range, University Club Short Course, University Club Short Game Area, University Club Indoor Hitting Area with Golf Achiever Simulator and Knight’s Play Golf Center.

Golf: For Business and Life will teach each student the following concepts: Learn and understand the history of golf and its origin Perform and understand all golf skills

o Full Swingo Chippingo Puttingo Pitching/Bunker Play

Understand golf’s contributions to personal exercise and well being Learn and apply the terminology, rules and etiquette of the game of golf Play a 9-hole round of golf Understand the value of the game of golf and the importance of using golf as a business

tool Final Exam—paper and pencil test and on course proficiency

Golf: For Business and Life will be a collaboration of the College of Natural Resources and the College of Management on the campus of North Carolina State University. The PGA Golf Management program is located within the College of Natural resources and will be responsible for all instruction to the students in the College of Management. Students will gain an understanding of how valuable the game of golf can be to their future business endeavors.

Executive Summary

The PGA Golf Management program is part of one of the leading land-grant institutions in the nation, on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. There are currently 20 programs that are accredited by the PGA of America across the country. The PGA Golf Management program at North Carolina State University lies in the College of Natural Resources under the Department of Parks, Recreation, Tourism Management. Our program helps to train young men and women towards their goal of becoming a member of the PGA of America through class work and community involvement.

The PGA of America, created a 501 (c) (3) public philanthropic foundation which later became the PGA Foundation. The PGA Foundation is dedicated to providing resources, professional expertise and programs to make golf accessible to all segments of the population. The PGA Foundation’s priority is to grow the game of golf while using the game to enhance the quality of life for all people, especially for those who are under-served by the game. The PGA of America is constantly coming up with growth of the game initiatives to get more individuals playing the great game of golf such as: Play Golf America, Patriot Golf Day, 1st Tee Chapters, Golf 2.0 and Golf: For Business and Life.

The PGA initiative, Golf: For Business and Life, strives to get upper level undergraduate and graduate level students involved in the game of golf. The game of golf is one that can be played for a lifetime and it can also be used a valuable tool in the business world of today.Golf: For Business and Life is a 16 week class that would be offered in the Fall Semester over the next three years. This beneficial program will not only affect the students that take the class, but it will assist the PGA Golf Management students that will assist in delivering the class as part of their major. Each of the students that participate in Golf: For Business and Life will gain an overview of the game of golf, from its history, rules and etiquette, full swing, chipping, putting and pitching. By the end of the semester, each student will have a sound understanding of all golf concepts and the conclusion of the class will be 9-hole on course playing session.

The following grant proposal from the PGA Golf Management on the campus of North Carolina State University requests $30,000 from the PGA Foundation to administer Golf: For Business and Life for 3 years to upper level undergraduate and graduate students, to utilize golf as an effective business tool.
