● Bake a white cake and add green food colouring as a snack

● Mix thawed icecream with lemonade. Scoop into cupcake liners, freeze overnight. Just before serving add teddy graham.

● Bring in “junk” - kleenex boxes, paper towel rolls, small containers/cartons. Design and build own

rocket ship

● Using Ritz crackers and cheesespread, bite and try to make different moonshapes

● Journals: “hide” a yellow moon in a creative drawing

● Glue the following poem onto black construction paper. Use aluminum foil to cut out different

moonshapes and glue onto black paper.

● Bulliten Board/journals:● Build rocket ship with paper square letters of names

(see illustration)

● Match pattern blocks to rocketship designs

Happy Birthday, Moon ● Discuss friendships, common interests. Encourage

children to talk about the things they have in common with their friends (shared interests, enjoying/ laughing/feeling sad about the same things)are

important parts of friendship.● When re-reading the story, have students pretend to

be the moon and echo bear’s words● Cut out skinny rectangle and fatter larger rectangle.

Glue onto construction paper to make a hat, and decorate.

● Build a telescope using paper towel rolls or Pringles containers, and decorate with glitter, stickers,

construction paper, tissue paper

● Any of the moon books lend themselves naturally to science lessons about the moon

Popcorn ● Journals - what could you do with a house (room) full

of popcorn?● Take popcorn and shake with dry tempera to color.

Glue onto black paper and make a collage● Estimate how much popcorn would fit in Bear’s house

(using a template of his house). Fill the template with real popcorn and count it to check estimates. Eat the

popcorn in Bear’s house. ● Pop and eat hot buttered popcorn while enjoying a

● Sensory Bin - use scoops, funnels and other containers to explore, measure and compare volumes

Sandcake ● Draw a simple outline of a cake. Paint on a thin layer of white glue and sprinkle sand overtop to create your own sand cake.

● Design a sandcastle. Use Elmer’s glue for outline. Sprinkle with sand and add details.

● Sensory Bin - use small beach animals, containers and

scoops to explore, compare and measure

Children's BooksFrank Asch is an American children's writer, best known for his

Moonbear picture books.

Asch published his first picture book, George's Store, in 1968. The

following year he graduated from Cooper Union with a BFA. Since

then he has taught at a public school in India, as well as at a

Montessori school in the United States, conducted numerous creative

workshops for children. He has written over 60 books, including

Turtle Tale, Mooncake, I Can Blink and Happy Birthday Moon. In

1989 he wrote Here Comes the Cat! in collaboration with Vladimir

Vagin. The book was awarded the Russian National Book Award and

was considered the first Russian-American collaboration on a

children's book.

Asch lived in Somerville, New Jersey where he and his wife home-

schooled their son Devin.

He currently lives in Vermont with his wife, Jan.
