There are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:1. JFK in Latin America------------(very compassionate!)2. Nixon in Chile--------------(not very compassionate and very anti- communist!!!!)3. Jimmy Carter and his Quest for Human Rights and the Panama Canal Treaty (very

compassionate!)

P.S. If u get an open-ended question on the Cold War in Latin America u can always write about Cuba. Also, DON’T 4GET that Reagan killed communists everywhere in Latin America (Iran-Contra)

JIMMY CARTER AND HIS QUEST FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

(PICTURE= A MIXTURE OF CINTRA AND SARAH)

Some people consider Jimmy Carter one of the best Presidents in history and some consider him one of the worst. Economically he was one of the worst: when my parents bought their first home in NY 1984 they got a 14% interest rate, which is very high. Today, interest rates for a house are closer to 4%. But don’t 4GET that it was Jimmy Carter that initiated Operation Cyclone, and that he was the only one who actually had the cahones to boycott the Olympics in Moscow in 1980.

The thing is, JIMBO was actually a Baptist Minister for a while, and his Christian faith was so straight and so strong that he genuinely wanted the world to be a better place. He wanted to stop killing communists and really wanted to focus on Human Rights in places like Panama, Africa, Asia, and even the Middle East with Israel with the Palestinians.

Jimmy Carter came from a family of peanut farmers in Georgia and then became Governor of Georgia in the 70’s. He then becomes the 39th President from 1976-1980 after Nixon and Ford left. I think that America was so tired of Richard Nixon, Watergate and the Vietnam War that they wanted the most pacifist and liberal President they could find.

Jimmy Carter (JIMBO) also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Actually, he and Bill Clinton are probably the most active and humanitarian Presidents after their presidencies. He left the family of Southern Baptist Ministers in the United States in 2012 when they wouldn’t allow gays and lesbians to join the Church.

Page 3: shtrakhmansworld.weebly.comshtrakhmansworld.weebly.com/.../0/1/4/10147534/ib_lati…  · Web viewThere are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:

Fun Facts: He started Habitat for Humanity, which builds houses for those less fortunate. I know a family in North Carolina that just got a house built for them last year; they have 2 small children and the mom survived Stage 4 Breast Cancer! Habitat has built over 2 million houses for deserving families. I tried volunteering but they said they needed money not helpers

Jimmy understood something that only Shtrakhman and a select few American citizens understand: poverty breeds instability. He wanted the United States to focus on being a humanitarian nation instead of just a militaristic one. He wanted to fight communism by addressing poverty, conflict and negativity. He legitimately thought this was the best strategy to combat evil. He was tired of killing anti-Communists and he was tired of Vietnam. After all, he was a Baptist Minister! And he started in Latin America.

Just to give you an idea of how poor Central America is even in 2016:1. Honduras has a 75% Poverty Rate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!2. Guatemala has the HIGHEST murder rate in the world.3. 100,000 kids from Central America snuck into Arizona and California in 20154. Another 30,000 kids tried to come to the US in 20165. What we should do about this will be a focus of our chapter on

IB: Hispanic American Civil Rights in the 3rd quarter.

Spain and Portugal colonization left them with:1. An illiterate population-----------------------Millions of ex-slaves

2. Massive poverty------------------------No Social Mobility (1%/99%)3. No industrialization (no manufacturing and no factories)

4. No gold or silver left (The Spanish took all they could)

CARTER AND THE PANAMA CANAL TREATYThe Panama Canal connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean through the country of…………….. Panama. It is 50 miles long and is used by 15,000 ships every year, paying $1,000,000,000 in tolls. B4 the Panama Canal u had to go ALL……. THE….. WAY AROUND the tip of South America. That’s 6000 miles math nerds!!

Page 4: shtrakhmansworld.weebly.comshtrakhmansworld.weebly.com/.../0/1/4/10147534/ib_lati…  · Web viewThere are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:

You see, after Spain and America fought each other in the Spanish-American War of 1898 we actually got control of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. Afterwards, we were like “we gotta control the Americas YO”. We helped Panama get its independence from Colombia and then we built the Canal. President Teddy Roosevelt (FDR’s uncle) started building the Panama Canal in the year in 1904 and it took about 10 years to complete. We spent about $375,000,000 on it so we felt that we owned it even though it was in Panama.

BUT………DON’T 4GET that every country in Latin America is broke, so Jimmy Carter will want to fix this.

JIMMY CARTER AND THE PANAMA CANAL TREATY (1977)(the year of my birth and start of new calendar)

Jimmy Carter will give the Panama Canal BACK to Panama. The Canal Treaty was signed in 1977 but was promised to Panama only in 1999. Everybody was waiting to see if we would actually do it in 1999, and of course we did! Bill “the last Clinton” was President. Why make them wait till 1999? Cuz we wanted to make sure they knew how to run it yo!!! ** We had to MAKE SURE the Panamanians knew the engineering, hydraulics, electrical etc.

The PANAMA CANAL……:1. It’s 50 miles long (here to Palm Beach)2. It’s 85 feet above sea level.3. 25,000 workers died building it. (On the bridge near my house a guy is buried in the cement)4. 15,000 ships go through every year5. The largest just paid $375,000 to go thru!!!!!6. $1.3 billion per year goes to Panama

TRICK OR TREAT: Oh, but the US reserves the RIGHT to defend it from any threat that might interfere with the Panama Canal. So Panama owns it, but if u #$%^ with it, President “the Don” will come get ya! There will be orange everywhere!!

Of course many Republicans like Ronald Reagan said "The canal is ours, we bought and we paid for it and so we should keep it".

Reagan, and many Congressional Republicans, saw this as a sign of weakness in an already weak president (even though Carter had the cahones to boycott Moscow). Reagan (who got

Page 5: shtrakhmansworld.weebly.comshtrakhmansworld.weebly.com/.../0/1/4/10147534/ib_lati…  · Web viewThere are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:

his start during McCarthyism) saw us as being in a WAR against Russia. And wars do not require giving away billion dollar infrastructure projects, even if they are located in a foreign country. Panama was just another pawn in the proxy wars with Russia and should be treated as such!

THE SENATE: Still Carter got a 68% vote in the Senate. A 2/3 vote in REQUIRED for a TREATY and now Panama owns it.

Fun Fact: They just spent $10,000,000,000 to expand it. Now it will be able to handle ship 1500 feet long and 200 feet wide….but the CHINESE are spending $30,000,000,000 to build one in Nicaragua. Why? I don’t know! It will be very interesting to see how President-Elect Donald Trump handles China.

MAIN IDEA: This was all part of Jimmy Carter’s WHOLE PLAN for Human Rights.

CARTER: ISRAEL VS. THE PALESTINIANSHumans have been fighting over Israel since the birth of Jesus. Today, it is the source of endless conflict in the Middle East. Carter tried to fix this. Did he succeed? Yes and No!

ALL 3 RELIGIONS THINK THEY OWN JERUSALEM:1. The Jews think they own Jerusalem cuz Abraham made a deal with God 5000 years ago!

(Called the Covenant with God)2. Christians think they own it cuz Jesus was born in Nazareth and taught in Bethlehem!3. Muslims think they won it cuz Muhhamad’s armies took it over in 650 CE.

Holy Religious Sites of JerusalemJudaism- The Temple Mount and the Western Wall

Christianity- The Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Islam- The Dome of the Rock and the al-Aqsa Mosque.

Judaism: The Wailing Wall for prayer (no women allowed!)

After the Holocaust ended the United Nations decided to create a Jewish state in what is now Israel (1948). The problem is that both Jews and Palestinians have been living there since Abraham. They have been fighting each other over who controls what ever since. The capital of Israel is Jerusalem. The other 2 biggest cities are Tel Aviv and Haifa (I have about 39 relatives in Israel and if ur Jewish you can fly there for free up until the age of 25 yrs.old)

Page 6: shtrakhmansworld.weebly.comshtrakhmansworld.weebly.com/.../0/1/4/10147534/ib_lati…  · Web viewThere are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:

AFTER THE HOLOCAUST THE STATE OF ISRAEL IS CREATED BY THE UNAdolf Hitler killed 6 million Jews during the Holocaust. My grandmother lost 4 sisters and my maternal grandfather lost a leg! After WWII, the United Nations, with full American support, agreed to create a Jewish State in the area known as Israel. Nobody else wanted them. During WWII, both America and Europe refused to take Jewish refugees. The United States even sent back a ship full of Jewish refuges after it made it all the way across the Atlantic. In fact, the only country willing to take Soviet Jews like my family were America, Israel and……Australia. Lucky 4 U my dad chose the US. So the United Nations was very eager to correct these mistakes after the Holocaust ended.

The problem is that Israel is surrounded by 7 Arab nations. In 1948, as soon as the Jewish state was created, they all attacked.

1. 1 st WAR: War of 1948: Israel was attacked by……. Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq. Israel won with American support!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. 2 ND WAR: War of 1967: Egypt, Jordan and Syria attacked again………………… Israel won again!!!!!!!!!!! (Also known as the 6-Day War cuz…….it lasted 6 days IB kids)

3 RD WAR: War of 1973: Egypt and Syria attack again………..Israel wins again! (Also known as the Yom-Kippur War. *Yom-Kippur is the holiest day in Judaism and is known as “the Day of Atonement” when they remember the dead. This is the ONLY day my parents ever visit a Synagogue.

ISRAEL WANTS PAYBACK!Now imagine if u lived in house on a block with 7 other houses. Then 6 of them attacked but YOU WON! Then they attacked two times more, and YOU WON AGAIN!. What would u do? You might just take the 2 houses next door to you to protect yourself against future attack, right?! This is called “LAND 4 SECURITY” and it’s exactly what Stalin did after WW2.

As a result, after 1948 Israel GREW…..AND GREW…….AND GREW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Israel took a piece of land from Lebanon and then a bunch of land from Egypt called the Sinai Peninsula (pronounced S-eye-nai Peninsula). And finally, they kept kicking Palestinians out of their homes and villages

Page 7: shtrakhmansworld.weebly.comshtrakhmansworld.weebly.com/.../0/1/4/10147534/ib_lati…  · Web viewThere are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:

They started taking more and more Palestinian villages kicking the people out of their homes. ARGUMENT: They argued that if one is attacked then one has the right to take the spoils of war. First of all, God promised them the WHOLE area of Israel in the Old Testament, and 2nd we were attacked and u lost! This is the EXACT same argument that Stalin used after the Second World War.

Israel TOOK: The West Bank from Palestine- The Gaza Strip from Palestine

The GREEN is the Palestinian land…which keeps getting smaller and smaller……..

THE CAMP DAVID ACCORDS:JIMMY CARTER TRIES TO MAKE PEACE BETWEEN THE ISRAELIS AND

PALESTINIANS. GOOD LUCK!

CAMP DAVID: Camp David is the forested Presidential Retreat 100 miles from Washington. It’s where the Presidents go to “CHILL”! They usually take a helicopter called Marine One instead of Air Force One.

Jimmy Carter meets with Israel, the Palestinians and Egypt at Camp David and gives the Palestinians 2 cities in Israel that they took after all the wars. These 2 areas are the West Bank and the Gaza Strip (see below)---but they did NOT give back the holy city of JERUSALEM!!! This upset the Palestinians to no end but there was nothing that they could do, they were negotiating from a point of relative weakness. In addition, the Palestinians wanted

Page 8: shtrakhmansworld.weebly.comshtrakhmansworld.weebly.com/.../0/1/4/10147534/ib_lati…  · Web viewThere are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:

every..single…one of the homes their relatives lived in after WW2, but this the Israelis would never agree to since, again, they used “LAND 4 SECURITY”.

The Israelis also promised the Palestinians that these 2 areas would be SELF-GOVERNING. That is, Israel will NOT be in charge. And that is the way it is today. Some people were happy---some were upset. That is called compromise.

So the Palestinians got:1. The West Bank2. The Gaza Strip

3. NOT JERUSALEM4. NONE OF THEIR HOMES BACK

5. Self-government in those 2 areas

The 1 st part of the treaty dealt with Palestinian land BUT…… The 2 ND part of the treaty made peace between ISRAEL AND EGYPT for the 1st time since 1948. This is really important because Egypt has 70 million people and is one of the largest economies in the Muslim world.

The CAMP-DAVID ACCORDS gave the Sinai Peninsula back to the Egyptians BUT………….Egypt had to PROMISE to secure the Gaza Strip. That is, they had to SWEAR to not let bombs, or guns, or grenades, get from Egypt to the Palestinians. This is still true today. Actually, the Palestinians feel they are being illegally and unfairly SQUEEZED by the Israelis from the North and East, and the Egyptians from the South and West.

Israel argues that the Palestinians engage in TOO MUCH terrorist activity to be trusted.

Page 9: shtrakhmansworld.weebly.comshtrakhmansworld.weebly.com/.../0/1/4/10147534/ib_lati…  · Web viewThere are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:

FAST FACTS ON CAMP DAVID ACCORDS- Signed after 12 days of SECRET meetings at Camp David (Y keep it secret? The American and

Israeli media would have….killed…..it!)

- Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin (pronounced Bay-gin) BOTH won the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize in Stockholm, Sweden. (Carter won his in 2002 for unrelated global humanitarian work. When will u win yours?!)

*Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin HATED each-other. Carter was the intermediary. Carter had to be like a friend to a boyfriend and girlfriend fighting with each-other but refusing to talk.

Of course the hardliners in Israel and Ronald Reagan in America HATED this idea. Israel needed “LAND 4 SECURITY” they argued. Still, Carter felt it was a new time and for the 1st time in history, Egypt, Israel and the Palestinians made nice and hugged it out! Hence the 1978 Noble Peace Prizes.

YOU GET $1.5 MILLION FOR A NOBEL PRIZE 1964: MLK

1979: Mother Theresa in India1986: Elie Wiesel who wrote ‘Night’ about the Holocaust

ISRAEL CONT.This was a short lived peace unfortunately. The Israelis and the Palestinians continue to fight every day. We will watch a great Vice DOCUMENTARY about this called “Intifadah”.

FIRST INTIFADAH: 1987-1993 2 ND INTIFADAH: THE YEAR 2000 179 Israelis killed 1000 Israelis killed1000 Palestinians killed 2000 Palestinians killed100,000 arrested250 deported1000 homes destroyed 4 being terrorist cells

MAIN IDEA:What Jimmy Carter wanted to do was turn America into a Human-Rights nation

instead of just an anti-Communist one.

Jimmy Carter HATED the Vietnam War He HATED Richard Nixon and bombing Cambodia He hated supporting anti-Communist dictators in Latin America and Africa like what Regan

will do later. He UNDERSTOOD that Communism comes out of suffering. He DID NOT want to violate what

he considered to be America’s strongest moral principles for the sake of National Security.

QUOTE: “I would hope that the nations of the world might say that we built an everlasting peace, based not on weapons of war, but on international policies of Human Rights.”- Jimmy Carter

Look at what he said about Vietnam:“For too many years, we’ve been willing to adopt the flawed and erroneous principles and

tactics of our adversaries, sometimes abandoning our own values for theirs. We’ve fought fire with fire, never thinking that fire is sometimes best quenched with water. This approach

failed, with Vietnam the best example of its intellectual and moral poverty.

CARTER’S QUEST FOR HUMAN RIGHTS1. SOUTH KOREA: Even though we were friends with them and needed their help against North

Korea, he told SOUTH KOREA to stop throwing communists and political opponents in jail without due process, a fair trial, and the rule of law. No more Singman Rhees or Ngo Dinh Diems under Carter. DON’t 4GET that Reagan completely REVERSES this and starts supporting ANY anti-communist killers in Latin America

2. 3 rd WORLD NATIONS: He told Congress to stop giving $$$$$ to naughty anti-communists in Uganda (Africa), and Latin America: Nicaragua, El Salvador and Chile.

Page 11: shtrakhmansworld.weebly.comshtrakhmansworld.weebly.com/.../0/1/4/10147534/ib_lati…  · Web viewThere are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:

3. RUSSIA: Tried to be friends with Russia (and pass SALT II with Leonid Brezhnev) but THAT ALL WENT OUT THE WINDOW WHEN RUSSA INVADED AFGHANISTAN IN 1979!!!

CARTER’S HUMAN RIGHTS LEGACY CONT….A. Because of JIMBO, Congress and the Department of State now have to issue a “a

full and complete report” on human rights practices around the world EVERY SINGLE YEAR!

B. In 1977, the year of my birth, it was only 300 pages (like your EE’s).C. Today, in 2016, its 6000 pages long (like your IA’s) and covers 195 different

countries! And 3 planets!

HOMEWORK QUESTIONS: ANALYZE THE FOLLOWING POINTS1. How would you describe Carter’s fundamental approach to Human Rights?2. What was his philosophy on Panama and WHY?3. Was his reaction to Afghanistan a reversal or implementation of his overriding philosophy?

ISRAEL VS THE PALESTINIANSA. What’s the BEEF between Israel and the Palestinians?

B. What did the Camp David Accords accomplish?

C. Why was it BOTH a win-win AND a lose-lose?

D. How did the State Department change because of him?

E. What in Carter’s early life would lead u to think he would be so good at Human Rights legislation?

HL/IB QUESTION #2: JFK’S ALLIANCE 4 PROGRESS

Page 12: shtrakhmansworld.weebly.comshtrakhmansworld.weebly.com/.../0/1/4/10147534/ib_lati…  · Web viewThere are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was really 2 presidents; the hard-liner in Cuba and the compassionate dude in the rest of Latin America. On the one hand, he truly tightened the grip of embargo around Cuba’s neck, and of course he almost caused WWII with the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Bay of Pigs, but in the rest of Latin America he donated billions of dollars to humanitarian organizations that had nothing to do with killing commies. This was called his ‘Alliance 4 Progress’.

JFK basically understood what Carter understood; to truly defeat communism, you must address poverty. Cuba represented a new Domino Theory in Latin America but that didn’t have to mean war or the assassination of communists. Reagan will take the opposite approach and fund anti-commie killers no matter how brutal.

ALLIANCE 4 PROGRESSIf U could do anything to get rid of Latin America, African or Asian poverty, what would it be?

- $$$ for schools------------$$$ for hospitals-----------Cell phones- Girls and education?- What (electricity, roads, sanitation and sewers)

JFK gave Latin America $20 billion to help with poverty to be spent how they see fit!!!

$20,000,000,000 (That’s 1000, 1000, 1000’s)1) The building of schools (literacy and education lead to progress, everywhere except America) *Fun Fact: Mexico is considered to have the WORST educational system in all of Latin America

2) Foreign exchange programs (Do any of you know someone who has lived with a family in another country?) Can U see the social and political benefit of having a robust foreign-exchange program? We once had an exchange student from Germany at Plantation High who literally wrote better than many of the IB Seniors born in America.

Page 13: shtrakhmansworld.weebly.comshtrakhmansworld.weebly.com/.../0/1/4/10147534/ib_lati…  · Web viewThere are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:

3) Technical assistance in building power lines, dams, levees etc. This includes electrical grids and lines like the ones that no longer work in Puerto Rico. No electricity==poverty!

4) We would buy their natural resources (oil, coal, sugar, bananas, COFFEE!!!!!!!!!!) Kennedy felt that the United States could afford to absorb all of their countries products.

*This is a very important point. A lot of these Central American nations only really have 1 or 2 natural resources, and they need CUSTOMERS for them. If America embargoes them like they did Cuba, they can’t survive. Or they turn to Russia. America saw this and decided to do business with these countries to help financially support them. Help financially support farmers, sailors, the airport, the ports, the small businesses, the factories etc.

KENNEDY ALSO STARTED THE PEACE CORPS The Peace Corps is an organization that sends college and graduate students to 3rd world countries (Africa, Asia, Latin America etc.) to help build schools, hospitals, help with medical clinics, farming etc.

When I was in college (In the 20th century), it was so hard to get into the Peace Corps that you had to major in either Environmental Science or Politics. My mommy wouldn’t let me go anyway! I wanted to go to El Salvador to photograph the rebels and she nearly laughed herself off the chair. She also told me that she would break my knees before letting me go into the communist jungle in El Salvador. I went to Paris instead and had croissants with raspberry jam. It’s the same thing, no?

- The Peace Corps have had 250,000 volunteers so far- Have helped out in 240 countries- 63% female (Who’s signing up now???!!)- 93% single (I’m goin!! Michael, ur in charge!)

Where Volunteers Serve Africa: 46%

Latin America: 20% Eastern Europe/Central Asia: 13%

Asia: 10%

Peace Corps Volunteers by Work Area Education: 40%

Health: 22% Environment: 12%

Community Economic Development: 11% Youth in Development: 7%

ASSIGNMENTS:1. Your essay question for this packet, and possibly on the IB Exam in May, will be

on Kennedy’s Alliance 4 Progress. Make any study notes you think will be valuable.

IB QUESTION #3: RICHARD “TRICKY DICK” NIXON IN CHILE

MAIN IDEA: IF JFK and CARTER were softies in Latin America…………NIXON WAS NOT!!!

DON’T 4GET that Richard Nixon was a ‘SUPER ANTI-COMMUNIST’. First, he was part of the “Red Scare” of McCarthyism as a Congressman from California …. And then he totally escalated the Vietnam War and then had the gall to lie about it. He even illegally bombed Cambodia in 1972 by attacking the guerrilla warfare tunnels of the Ho-Chi-Minh Trail. Nixon is the one who finally ended the Vietnam War and instituted the Nixon Doctrine (“Asia, Ur on ur own!), but not BEFORE KILLING ANOTHER 35,000 AMERICANS!!

And that doesn’t even get into Watergate and why Nixon was the 1st President EVER to quit. His Vice-President Gerald Ford pardoned him in 1973.

Chile was just another “proxy war” in the Cold War. Between the US and the USSR. Between capitalism and communism.

Chile was very poor: Their only export is copper (all the mines owned by foreigners)- The poverty rate was 45% in 1970!!!!!!!!!!!- They only had a 58 year old Life Expectancy in 1970- Average salary= $1.90 PER DAY

Page 15: shtrakhmansworld.weebly.comshtrakhmansworld.weebly.com/.../0/1/4/10147534/ib_lati…  · Web viewThere are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:

So it is NO SURPRISE that when Chile was in danger of becoming Communist, (as was much of Latin America as a reaction to poverty), Nixon jumped right in.

NIXON was kind of a reversal of JFK’s ALLIANCE FOR PROGRESS and more in line with how we viewed Cuba ($$$$). We didn’t care about all the poverty and corruption that existed in Latin American countries before they became communist, we just wanted to prevent change and keep American business friendly governments in place. Remember what President Woodrow Wilson said: “America’s business IS business!”

NIXON IN CHILE (NIXON WAS 1968-1972)Nixon was also Ike’s Vice President from 1952-1960

Nixon was President from 1968- 1972 (resigned). In 1970 Chile, a man named Salvador Allende (pronounced A-Yenday) won the Presidential election. We were afraid that Allende was a Communist and Nixon publicly called Chile “the next Cuba”. The CIA tried to stop him from getting elected but he won anyway (He got 40% of the vote and in Chile that’s A LOT.) *In South Vietnam, Ho-Chi-Minh would have gotten 80%!

Allende thought that Chile had the same problem as much of Latin America: key natural resources and the refineries and factories that processed them, were owned by foreigners. And any $$$ being generated was NOT trickling down to the average peasant. As a result, Allende wanted to NATIONALIZE US companies and the whole copper industry, Chile’s only real export. This is EXACTLY what Fidel Castro did in Cuba. Plus, Salvador Allende had actually flown to Havana and met with Fidel Castro. This is a no-no. We DID NOT want a new Cuba. The DOMINO THEORY applied to this hemisphere now.

PLEAZE DON’T 4GET: Cuba is so poor now because we have used her as a PAWN in the Cold War, and that’s what all of these countries are: PAWNS! Chile, Cuba, El Salvador. Only Jimbo went in a different direction with Panama and the Canal Treaty. Other than that, it’s either $$$ or communism, but America comes first!

Page 16: shtrakhmansworld.weebly.comshtrakhmansworld.weebly.com/.../0/1/4/10147534/ib_lati…  · Web viewThere are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:

Plus, Cuba became communist in 1959 and we embargoed in 1960. U think Vietnam in 1968 wasn’t related?! U have to see the BIG PICTURE!!!

Nixon told the CIA: start looking for Chilean military officers who would be willing to overthrow the government (coup d-etat: French for ‘taking of the state’.)

WE immediately:- Cut off all foreign aid to Chile (AW!!!)- Supported all of Allende’s opponents

- Were actively seeking either his defeat, resignation, or OVERTHROW B4 the next 1976 election.

** We also told the IMF (International Monetary Fund) and the World Bank NOT to lend them money-naughty** We told Americans NOT to invest there- naughty, naughty** We tried to disrupt the global COPPER market- naughty, naughty, naughty

As Nixon said “We want to make the Chilean economy SCREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

THE CIAWe gave the CIA $10 million to find a way to get rid of Allende. The year was 1973. Same time as Vietnam

(The CIA [Central Intelligence Agency] was formed by Eisenhower when Nixon was his V.P)

We found one General willing to kill Allende, but when he went back on his word we made him “commit suicide”.

(**In the movie “Analyze This” starring Robert De Niro, the guy asks “Where’s the witness?” De Niro says “he stabbed himself in the back!” “Oh, and then a truck ran him over. Twice!”)

The THING is: we had to do it using covert operations like the CIA. Nixon didn’t just want to invade. This is true for several possible reasons.

1) Maybe he didn’t want to further antagonize the Soviet Union as DÉTENTE was just heating up and he wanted to normalize relations with them and China

Page 17: shtrakhmansworld.weebly.comshtrakhmansworld.weebly.com/.../0/1/4/10147534/ib_lati…  · Web viewThere are 3 possible IB Questions in this packet and they are ALL about Latin America:

2) More likely: Vietnam was raging! Nixon didn’t want the American public to find out and increase their protests!

3) How would it look if America, the 1st democracy since ancient Greece, simply assassinated a democratically elected President?!!!!!!!!

By 1973 Allende had committed “suicide”. He shot himself on Sept. 11th, 1973 using an AK-47. This has been verified by autopsy and exhumation.

The COUP D’ETAT was led by Allende’s own Army Commander-in-Chief: Augusto Pinochet (a very bad dude). His last name is pronounced Peeno-shay)

LETS LOOK AT WHAT NAUGHTY OL’ PINOCHET DID WITH THE CIA’S HELP:30,000 tortured

3000 killed1500 ‘DISAPPEARED’ (The rumor is that he would fly them over the Pacific Ocean and drop

them in! Like kids who don’t do their IA’s)

Opened up 125 SECRET BANK ACCOUNTS IN America and Europe where he stole ALL OF CHILE’S RICHES

Of course the usual:- No Freedom of Speech

- No Freedom of the Press- No Right to Assemble Pinochet died in 2006

There were parades on the streets and people spit on his coffin Then he was cremated

QUESTIONS1. What is the relationship between poverty and communism?

2. How does Cuba fit into this whole thing?3. List these 4 Presidents in terms of compassion in Latin America (Reagan, JFK, Carter,
