NUS-Wuhan University Winter Programme 2012 What is this program about? The NUS-Wuhan University Winter Programme is a customized winter programme where NUS faculty members will travel with students and teach courses together with professors from Wuhan University. The programme carries 4 MC and is recognized by both the NUS Department of Chinese Studies and China Studies Minor Programme. Students will spend a week in Chengdu and 2 weeks in Wuhan. When does it take place? 9 - 29 December 2012 Where does it take place? Wuhan, PRC (with a week to be spent in Chengdu) Wuhan University is one of the top universities in China. Founded in 1893, it is one of the oldest Chinese universities and its campus is famous for its beautiful scenery and lake. It is located in Hubei Province's capital Wuhan. Important cities such as Beijing and Tianjin in the north, Guangzhou and Hong Kong in the south, Shanghai and Hangzhou in the east, and Chengdu and Xi’an in the west can be found within a 1,200km radius of Wuhan. It is known as “the thoroughfare to 9 provinces”. With the strategy of “the Rise of China” by the Chinese central government, Wuhan has become a promising city and an ideal land for business and investment.

In 2011, the NUS-Wuhan University Summer Programme was held from 22 May to 14 June 2011. This intensive 24-day programme provided a general understanding of China by focusing on topical aspects of both historical and contemporary issues. Topics that were discussed include Chinese cultural traditions, Chinese world order, Chinese economy, environmental issues and legal system in contemporary China.

What is the academic content? The programme aims to provide a general understanding of China by focusing on topical aspects of both historical and contemporary issues. Topics that will be discussed include Chinese cultural traditions, Chinese world order, Chinese economy, environmental issues and legal system in contemporary China. The winter programme is divided into 4 components and co-taught by professors from both NUS and Wuhan University: Part 1: Environmental Management and Change (Prof Victor Savage, NUS) Part 2: Historical and Cultural Traditions (Prof Lee Cheuk Yin, NUS) Part 3: Law and Order (Prof Kong Lingjie & TBC, WHU) Part 4: Economy and Enterprise (Prof Liu Xueyuan, WHU) Students will attend lectures and seminars at the Wuhan University together with students from Wuhan University. Besides visits to local historical sites and museums, study trips outside Wuhan will also be organized, including field trips to the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, the Earthquake Zone, the Giant Panda Breeding and Research Centre in Sichuan; and excursions to Suzhou to study Chinese gardens and folk culture.

Notes: All academic lectures and seminars will be conducted in English. Chinese language courses, which are optional, will be conducted in both Chinese and English. Chinese language courses will not be counted towards the CA.

Modular Credits The programme carries 4 MC and is recognized by both the Department of Chinese Studies and China Studies Minor Programme. The application for credit transfer is subject to the successful completion of the course and the approval of the home faculty. How much does it cost? Guidelines for the write-up:

1. How has the programme benefitted you personally and academically? 2. What lessons would you like to share with others going to the same host university /

organization or country? 3. Would you recommend your host university / organization to other NUS students? 4. Append 6 hi-res jpeg photographs. For each image, include captions and location details:

a. 2 images of the host university / organization b. 2 images of you with host university landmarks in the background c. 2 images of you interacting with local populations

What does it include? Programme fee includes the following:

• Return airfare to China • Travel insurance • Visa application • Transportation • Accommodation throughout the programme • Course fee • Fieldtrip expenses

What is the student accommodation?

Student will be provided with accommodation at the Wuhan University guesthouse. Each room is facilitated with two single beds, writing desk, TV, telephone, internet access and attached bathroom. Reasonable acommodation will be arranged for the Chengdu portion of the programme as well. Available for NASA Enhancement No, as we have incorporated all funding elements into the programme fee. Number of placements available? 30 What are the eligibility requirements?

• Students should not be in their graduating semester prior to participating in this programme • CAP of 3.5 and above • Students must not be a Chinese national • Priority will be given to Singaporean nationals and students seeking academic credit

Is visa required? Yes. IRO will assist in applying for the Chinese visa on behalf of students. How do I apply? Application Deadline is on Monday, 22 October 2012. The winter programme, jointly offered by NUS and the Wuhan University, is structured on an intensive basis that aims to provide a general understanding of China by focusing on topical aspects of both historical and contemporary issues. Topics that will be discussed include Chinese cultural traditions, Chinese world order, Chinese economy, environmental issues and legal system in contemporary China. The summer programme is divided into 4 parts and co-taught by professors from both NUS and Wuhan University:

The rest of the time will be in Wuhan to attend lectures and seminars at the Wuhan University together with students from Wuhan University. Pre-requisites The programme is intended for students who are interested in understanding more about China. To qualify for the programme, a minimum CAP of 3.5 is required. Maximum Class Size 30 Assessment
