Websites Must Be
Mobile-Friendly in 2015
Is Your Site Mobile Ready?
Why should you worry
about Mobile Compatibility?
•65% of search traffic in 2014 originated from a phone or tablet
•Effective 4/21/15, Mobile-Friendly factors are a ranking signal in Google
1
Will the new algorithm
affect your website?
Here is how you can judge the impact:
• Webmaster Tools
• Test Your Website on Your Phone
• Run a Test
• Google Analytics
Webmaster Tools
• Google sent notifications via Webmaster tools about possible mobile issues. If you have Webmaster Tools setup, you should be able to login and look at the Messages section to see if you received a notice from.
• Log in to see if you received a message:https://www.google.com/webmasters/
Test your website on your phone
• When you look at your website on a mobile
device, do you see the same website as on the
desktop computer, but just smaller? If so, you
are not mobile ready.
Run a test
• Google has provided a quick test to
run on your webpages. Keep in mind,
the new ranking factors are applied page-
by-page, not website wide, so when you
are testing, you need to test ALL pages of
your website, not just your homepage.
Google Analytics
• Log in and go to
Audience>Mobile>Overview
• This shows what % of traffic to your
website is from mobile users
• This gives you an idea of the impact on
your search traffic if you are not ready for
April 21st.
Not mobile friendly?
Here are your options for your website:
• Invest in a new website
• Add a plugin
• Get a new theme
• Offer a “Native” homepage
Invest in a new website
• If you were planning a website project this
year anyway, I would stick with that plan
and rebuild with Responsive code. If you
aren’t ready for a new site, check out the
options that follow.
Add a plugin
• For sites built with a Content Management System (example: WordPress or Joomla site), you might be able to add a plugin that will generate a mobile site based on your current theme.
• Pro: This is a quick and inexpensive way to go mobile-friendly
• Con: You may not be able to be 100% mobile and some themes don’t work with these plugins.
Get a new theme
• If your site is built on a purchased theme
or template (not a custom design),
implementing a new theme can be a
smaller project then reprogramming your
current website.
Offer a “Native Homepage”
• Build a mobile-version of your homepage.
• Does not require rework of your current
site.
• Size of the project is dependent on how
many pages you really need.
Con: You won’t have 100% of your site mobile compatible
and you now have a second website to update and maintain.
I’m mobile ready, BUT…
I still received a message from Google!

Google Error Message
When Mobile-Friendly
• Typically we have seen these notices for
sites with a Purchased Theme and they
just need a few tweaks and they will be
fine.
• If you did get one and are not sure what it
means, give us a call at 513-510-4962.
