Principal’s Pen Dear Parents and Caregivers, Welcome back to another term at Balaclava State School. I trust you all had an excellent holiday and you are ready for the next great push towards the end of the year. We extend a warm welcome to the new families have joined us this term. We hope your children settle in quickly and enjoy their new school. This term we have a number of exciting events to look forward to. Keep checking the ‘Mark Your Calendar’ section in the newsletter to see what it coming up. The first of these events is the ‘Welcome Back Big Breakfast’ and ‘Whole School Assembly’ that will be held this Friday, 12 th October, from 7:45am. I would like to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to all families to attend and celebrate the beginning of Term 4. In between all of events for Term 4, we have students starting new units of work and assessment with all of this leading into the semester two reporting period. As you know, this term flies by even faster than the others do. I am sure teachers will appreciate any support that you can offer with reading, group work and other classroom activities. With the weather warming up, the classrooms will once again be using the air conditioners. It is also imperative that students have hats and sunscreen to avoid Wednesday 10 th October 2018 Week 1, Term 4 (Issue No# 16) unnecessary sun damage. It is also recommended that students have water bottles which they can keep under their desks or in the class fridge to prevent endless interruptions to learn when students need a drink. I trust that everyone will have a great Term 4 and I am looking forward to lots of great results from all our wonderful students. DEPUTY’S PEN To the Families and Friends of Balaclava SS,

Welcome back to an action-packed Term 4!

I’d like to congratulate students, families and staff on such a smooth start to the term. Children returned happy, prepared and excited for the term ahead. It was also wonderful to see so many parents and children walking to school together. Well done to everyone!

Our Prep students had a particularly exciting start to their term, with an early move into the ‘big school’. Due to renovations to the existing Prep Block, our 2018 Prep classes have now relocated into classrooms in the Junior School, and have already settled in extremely well. In past years, our Prep students have spent some time in the Junior School during Term 4, to prepare for their transition into Year 1. With this classroom change occurring for our Preps now, we know that these children will have a very smooth start to Year 1 in 2019!

To ensure our newest Prep students will also have a smooth start to their schooling in 2019, we are hosting our Balaclava SS Prep Open Day on Monday the 22nd of October. More information about our Open Day will be communicated on our Facebook page, so if you are aware of friends or family members who would like to join the Balaclava SS family for Prep in 2019, please share the information with them. All families of Kindy aged children are warmly invited to attend!

In the meantime, I hope to see you at the Big Breakfast and Welcome Back Parade at 8:00am on Friday!

Yours in Education, Lisa O’Malley

Deputy Principal

GOOD START PROGRAM – TERM 4 The Good Start Nutrition and Physical Activity Program is back for Term 4, 2018. This is a free program for Maori and Pacific Islander students, where children learn

through fun games and activities. The program will be held every Monday afternoon from 2:30 – 3:30pm at our school basketball courts, starting next Monday 15th

October. For more information please contact the school office on 40815333. SWIMMING – TERM 4 As part of the school’s Physical Education Program, students will commence Swimming and Water Safety Lessons in Week 2, Term 4. Notes have been sent home with students from Year 1 to Year 6. Permission slips and money need to be returned to the office by this Friday, 12th October. If you would prefer to pay via Centre Pay, forms are available at the office.

NO WALKING BUS There will be no Walking Bus for Weeks 2 and 3 for Term 4. We do apologise for any inconvenience. The Walking Bus will recommence Week 3, Monday 29th October.

BIRTH CERTIFICATES A Birth Certificate is a key identity document that is a requirement for each student at time of enrolment. If you have not supplied a copy of your child/children’s birth cetificate and you have one at home can you please bring it into the school so we can keep a copy in your child’s records. If you do not have a birth certificate for your child/children, you will need to apply for one to Queensland Births, Deaths and Marriages. We will be making contact with the parents/carers of those students who do not have a birth certifcate this term. It is very important that all our Senior students have a birth certificate to aid in their application for High School. MOBILE PHONES AT SCHOOL It has come to our attention that a number of students are bringing mobile phones to school. Please remind your child of the school policy on mobile phones; all students who possess mobile phones are required to submit their device at 8.30am in the morning to their classroom teacher or the school office. They will be available for collection from 2.30pm. Students who do not follow this policy will have their phones confiscated until a parent or carer comes to collect it. Thank you for your support with this. DRESS CODE POLICY With the start of the new term, it is a good time to remind students about our Dress Code Policy. Our Dress Code clearly articulates the expectations of the Balaclava State School uniform. This includes appropriate hats, shoes, T-shirts, shorts. A reminder to the students that nail polish, jewellery and make up are not part of our uniform and should NOT be worn to school at any time. We urge all parents to support the school with this policy. The P&C are currently selling the school shirts at a discounted price.

PREP ENROLMENTS FOR 2019 Do you have a younger sibling due to enrol for Prep 2019? Children born between 1st July 2013 and 30th June 2014, are eligible to enrol for Prep 2019 at Balaclava State School. Birth certificates and Immunisation Records must be produced.

PREP ORIENTATION DAY – MONDAY 22nd OCTOBER Balaclava State School invites you and your child to attend a day of transition to school activities, with a focus on establishing routines and getting to know each other. Participants will also tour the school to see our Prep classrooms and school facilities. All parents and children who will be Prep age for 2019 are invited to attend regardless, of whether they have enrolled for 2019, or not.

Plans of the Prep Building upgrade will be available on the day. This upgrade will provide our students with some of the best facilities in the region! The project will commence over the holidays and be completed by the beginning of Term 1, 2019.

DAY FOR DANIEL The annual Day for Daniel 2018 will be held on Friday the 26th of October

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation held the first Day for Daniel in November 2005. The Day for Daniel is a ‘National Day of Action’ to raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention. It is about educating children and adults about keeping kids safe through child safety and protection initiatives. It aims to help empower our children to ‘Recognise, React and Report’ if they feel something is not right.

‘Wear Red’ and Educate is the theme of for Day for Daniel. The student council will be organising activities on the day.The objectives of Day for Daniel are: 1. To educate children regarding their personal safety (including abduction). 2. To assist victims of crime, particularly where crime involves children. 3. To remember Daniel with suitable child safety community awareness events. 4. To support the families of Missing Persons particularly where it involves children. Day for Daniel is also an opportunity for Australians to make a statement that crimes against children are not acceptable in modern Australia
