LDR 3215 Leadership and Change in London is designed to introduce students to individual and organizational strategies to create transformational change. From revolution and immigration to social and economic issues, this course will give students experiential opportunities to gain insight and opportunity to better understand the leaders, leadership, and social change movements within British and United States history. LDR 3215 is an interactive theory-to-practice course focused on leadership as a change process. LDR 3215 is a valuable stand-alone course and does not have any prerequisites. If interested however, LDR 3215 also counts as one of the courses in the Undergraduate Leadership Certificate, Global Pathways Certificate, and Garnet and Gold Scholars Society. GARNET AND GOLD SCHOLAR SOCIETY Does your student organization participate in service to the community or leadership building? If so, your members should consider pursing induction into the Garnet and Gold Scholar Society. This scholar society recognizes and rewards students for their efforts outside the classroom that contribute to their education at Florida State University. LEADERSHAPE INSTITUTE Go Beyond Impossible. LeaderShape is an intensive energizing six-day institute that exists to inspire, develop, and support students who have a commitment to lead with a high level of integrity. From May 5-10, 2014, participants will travel to Panama City Beach for a week of personal growth and leadership development. During LeaderShape, participants will meet and work with 60-70 students from diverse backgrounds, as well as create a person vision. There is no cost to attend the LeaderShape Institute. FAST CARS AND MASON JARS Fast Cars and Mason Jars is a benefit event to raise money for Tree House. The event will be held on February 22nd. They are in need of volunteers for February 21, 22, and 23 at the Farm for set-up and for shifts on the day/evening of the event. Volunteers would be helping Friday morning with laying carpet down, setting up silent auction tables, etc. On Saturday, the tasks include setting up tables and chairs, helping place decorations up in the barn area, etc. On Sunday, volunteers would help break down the event. SOCIAL JUSTICE SYMPOSIUM You are invited to share your experiences and knowledge at the first annual Act! symposium at First Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee from February 28th, 2014 through March 2nd, 2014. This event will bring together a diverse array of community members, professionals, activists, artists, and researchers who all work toward social justice goals. The symposium is bringing together diverse social justice advocates in order to bridge divides and facilitate future collaboration. NATIONAL SOCIETY OF LEADERSHIP AND SUCCESS The National Society of Leadership and Success is an organization that has breached over 300 chapters across the United States. Recently, this group has established itself at Florida State University, with a mission to promote professional development, leadership, peer-to-peer mentoring, and networking. With this as their driving passion, they are an organization in its own who does not hold anyone to a number, being their GPA. RAVENS TUTORING AND ATHLETIC MENTORING PROGRAM
The Ravens Tutoring and Athletic Mentoring Program (RTAM) would like to invite FSU students to serve as volunteer mentors, tutors or interns for youth ages 5-18 who are facing challenges and need of support to succeed. Mentors are asked to meet students for at least one hour per week at a supervised location, such as the Jack Mclean Community Center, a church, or a school. The Mentor’s job is to help the young person define individual goals and find ways to achieve these goals. Tutors, on the other hand, will meet with a student four to five days per week and some Saturdays as needed to provide academic assistance in all subject areas. Tutoring is conducted in the Homework Room of the Jack Mclean Community Center. Internships are also available with the RTAM Program. LULLABY BABY Volunteers are needed to assist with a research assignment about the effects of singing, storytelling, guitar, and silence on preschoolers sleep during naptime. Students will need a background check before entering into the Magnolia and Little Lambs Preschool. The hours I needed for volunteers will be Monday thru Friday’s from anywhere between 12:45 and 1:45, scheduling can be altered depending on volunteers schedule, therefore, any dates/times needed off by volunteers needs to be submitted before beginning your volunteer hours. As a volunteer you DO NOT have to work every day of the week any available time will be appreciated and helpful. This project will be taking place for approximately one and a half to two months. If you plan to be out of town during spring break be sure to include that in your scheduling so that plans for work can be made accordingly. OVERCOMING FRUSTRATIONS Interested in social issues? Eating disorders affect 20 million women and 10 million men a year. Come to the SLC on Thursday, February 27th at 8:00pm to enjoy “Body Talk: Self-Love and Overcoming Frustrations,” a night of song and spoken word in support of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. AMERICAN RED CROSS - AIRPORT EXERCISE Tallahassee Regional Airport will be the scene of a major disaster-exercise on February 20th, when airport officials, law enforcement agencies, Leon County Emergency Medical Services (LCEMS), VolunteerLEON, you Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross and community members will stage a mock landing accident to test their ability to respond. They are looking for volunteers to play disaster “victims.” This is a half day training exercise offering a bag lunch and certificate of participation for all volunteers. Officials use this exercise to focus on testing communications, aircraft and victim rescue, firefighting capability and aircraft operations during a disaster, as well as security assessment and how different agencies work together. The event is highly structured and will involve active rescue scenes and on-site fire suppression activities with a burning plane simulator. Leon County EMS will be involved with field triage and treatment and simulated transport to a receiving facility. LCEMS is responsible for patient tracking and will lend its assistance to the airlines and you Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross for patient and family reunification efforts. CAMP BOGGY CREEK FAMILY WEEKEND PROGRAM Camp Boggy Creek is a place where children, coping with chronic and life-threatening illnesses, can come to camp and just be a kid. The Family Weekend program provides an opportunity for the entire family to come for a long weekend of fun camping activities. Volunteers are utilized to assist families throughout the weekend's activities as a companion and a friend. Please consider joining for an amazing long weekend of serving these camper families during your 2014 Spring Break event! The CBC 2014 Asthma and Airway Family Weekend. March 12th – 16th ( 5 day ASB event) begins on Wed. the 12th, at 9 am and runs through Sunday the 16th at 1pm for a total of 5 days. A total of 50 volunteers are needed (both male and female, ages 19 and older) who participate as a Family Pal, Activity Pal or Certified Lifeguard. NOTE: CBC is a non-profit Medical Camping Center for children and their families who suffer with serious illness. All the families as well as volunteers attend the camp free of charge. All meals and linens are provided for the volunteers during their stay. The volunteer is only responsible for completing our application, phone interview, medical forms and background check as described on the website and provide their own transportation to camp. SUSTAINABLE BIG BEND
Sustainable Big Bend (sustainablebigbend.org) is a 501(C) 3 grassroots educational organization located in Wakulla County but serving the region. Workshops are put on throughout the year, and this year local feedback inspired Sustainable Big Bend to again organize a Green Living Expo and Green Flea market. To celebrate Earth Day, the Expo will be on Saturday April 26th 2014. Volunteers are needed either throughout the preparation process or solely on the day of the event. Service opportunities include fundraising, marketing, web page assistance, set up and clean up. Volunteers are encouraged to take the initiative to create and facilitate one’s own project for the Expo. Cherry Laurel Independent Retirement Living community is in need of volunteers. All hours will be documented and are flexible. Volunteers are needed on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00am until 12:00pm; Sundays and Saturdays anytime from 9:00am until 6:00pm; and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00pm until 4:00pm. REGIONAL SCIENCE FAIR VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY The regional science fair needs volunteers taking place on February 13-14. Volunteers are needed to help set up on Thursday and Friday morning to late afternoon, and volunteers are also encouraged to help staff the Science Fair Open House on Thursday evening from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. The science fair participants will be with their projects in the Tully Gym while their parents attend a presentation given by FSU admissions. Volunteers are needed to walk around, interact with middle/high school aged participants, and share some love of science! This is an easy way to get involved with the science fair and the perfect opportunity to encourage youth to become more involved in science. There will be refreshments for volunteers afterwards and a short debriefing to discuss how to get students to continue with science fair part the elementary/middle school level. PROVIDENCE COMMUNTIY SERVICE CENTER The Delta Kappa Omega / Providence Community Service Center is a little more than one year old. Through this inaugural year of service Delta Kappa Omega/Providence Community Service Center has identified opportunities for individuals / organizations interested in volunteering within our center. There are youth and adults in this community needing workshops/training on a wealth of topics. Some suggestions include: Basic Computer Skills, GED Preparation, Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy, Self-Esteem, Conflict Resolution, Healthy Living, Arts and Crafts, Black History, Etiquette, Career Exploration, Personal Development, Writing/Journaling, and Hygiene. These type sessions can be weekly, bi-weekly, semimonthly, or monthly. The workshops can be scheduled based upon availability during our normal center operating house. Please contact the service center at (850) 544-6922. Organizations and individuals are needed to help youth with homework on a regular basis as well. The goal is to pair people up with specific youth to see that their homework is completed regularly (i.e. twice weekly). Adults are needed to simply monitor youth in the computer lab and persons entering/exiting the building.
