Principal’s Report

Welcome to the 2020 school year. An especially warm welcome to our new students and families. We also welcome, four new staff: - Mr Paul Keyte will be enlightening our students in the fields of Physics and Mathematics. - Mrs Robyn Wilson will be improving students’ mastery of Chemistry, Lifeskills and Science. - Mrs Andrea Steiner will be teaching and inspiring students in Mathematics and giving direct support to smaller groups in literacy and numeracy. - Mr Keith Martin is our new Computer Technician. Our new staff, students and families are joining a wonderful college community and we are sure that they will enjoy their time here. 2019 was a very successful year when we reflect on our excellent results compared to the State with NAPLAN, Teacher Surveys, Parent Surveys and most importantly Student Surveys. Our Area Leader rang to congratulate us our fantastic 2019 and also informed us that we had the third best VCE results in our Area, which extends from Yarrawonga to Shepparton and down to Wallan. At our first College Assembly our students were encouraged to set new limits for themselves as our students prove time and time again that they are exceptionally capable. Congratulations to our “2020 Alice Sloan Girls”, who completed their 10-day outdoor program in the holidays in trying weather conditions, in our beautiful “backyard”. They impressed with how they pushed themselves physically and emotionally and how they worked together as a group to set new limits for themselves. Thanks to OEG for their highly professional work with the group, Sara Watts and Bron for their organisation and the wonderful John and Jenny Sloan for their continued investment in our students. In the unlikely event that we have any families who have visited the Hubei Province in China in the holidays, we ask that you contact the College and let us know. The Commonwealth and Victorian Chief Medical Officers have advised if you have, that you need to stay at home for 14 days of isolation. We have an Information Evening for families of Year 12 VCAL and VCE students next Wednesday 5th of February, in the College Senior Learning Area at 6pm. The Minister of Education has banned Mobile Phones in schools from the beginning of this year. For our students this means they must leave their mobile phones in their lockers from the time they arrive at school until they leave at the end of the day. All students have been provided with a lock that we encourage them to use. We remind families that schools are not insured for personal student items and that they are brought to school at students own risk. Teachers may give students permission to use phones where appropriate to the learning task. If a student is using a phone without permission, it will be confiscated for the day. We ask that if parents wish to contact their children that they do so by ringing the front office. We love working with our families; we want to know if you need help or you feel there is an issue. We welcome feedback on

what we can do differently or better. All teachers emails can be found through the College website http://asc.vic.edu.au.

Often the best person to contact, as a first port of call for parents, is your students “Year Level Coordinator”.

Year 7’s Camp

Dear Year 7 parents and guardians,

Welcome to a new school year at Alexandra Secondary College and your student’s first year in High School. As you may already know, our Year 7’s camp is held early in the year as an opportunity for students to mix and get to know each other whilst participating in activities such as kayaking and hiking.

The camp will be held in Week 6 starting on the 2nd of March and finishing on the 6th at the Rubicon Outdoor Centre. Students were given consent forms and medical forms on the first day of school. Extra copies of these forms are available at the front office and they can be downloaded at any time from the Rubicon Outdoor Centre website. It would be excellent if we could receive as many of these forms back by Thursday the 6th of February in order to confirm numbers and begin forming groups.

Please see the next page for a consent form if needed.

More information will be available at the Year 7 Parent Information Evening on the 17th of February and further details will be sent home. However, in the meantime, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to email me at: [email protected] Looking forward to hopefully meeting some of you soon,

Sarah Ough

Alexandra Secondary College

Year 9 SSL program Term 4

Applications for the 2020 School for Student Leadership program scheduled for Term 4 to China should be submitted personally to Mrs Tossol by 3:30pm on Friday March 6th. Application forms were sent by email to all current Year 9 students and also to their families at the end of 2019. Please refer to your mail box to access the application form.

Please note it is most unlikely that there will be continuing issues with the Coronavirus in Term 4. However, if this is the

case an alternative program in Australia will be offered. For this reason do ensure your child submits an application if

they are interested in the program as late applications may not be considered.

ASC ‘Certificate of Excellence’

At Alexandra Secondary College, we pride ourselves on the wide diversity of opportunities we offer our students. These include but are not limited to: an extensive music programme, a diverse range of sporting events, an annual musical production, subject-specific academic competitions where our students pit themselves against the most able minds in Australia, and national and international tours.

To acknowledge both the efforts of and levels of achievement attained by our students, we instituted a ‘Certificate of Excellence’ back in 2013.

Students gain points for participating in each of the five fields of College life. These fields are: Academia, Sport, The Arts, Leadership and Extra Curricula. Students are awarded 1, 2 or 3 points in each field depending on the level of their performance. For example, a student would attain 1 point for competing in the House swimming sports, 2 points for competing at Regional level and 3 points for competing at State level.

There is a Junior Award for students in Years 7-9, and a Senior Award for students in Years 10-12. At the end of the first year in the Junior or Senior cycle students are eligible for a Bronze Award, at the end of the second year a Silver award and at the end of the third year a Gold award. For a student to attain a Gold Award they must accrue a defined amount of points over the three years in at least four of the five fields. In addition, they must attain 2 pointers in at least two fields and at least one 3 pointer.

Lily Wilson received her Gold Certificate at our end-of-year Presentation Evening in December 2019. Joss Lopez was absent on the SSL program in China when applications were due, and so received his award belatedly at our general assembly on Wednesday. We congratulate both students on their achievements over the past three years at ASC.

We encourage all students to challenge themselves to embrace the myriad of opportunities the College offers.

Lily and Joss receiving their awards.
