Principal’s Message
WEEK 1 TERM 1
29 January 2020
Happy New Year
It was a welcomed sight last week to see rain, not just in our local area, but to many parts of the country that desperately needed it. The
end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 has been a tumultuous and testing time for even the most resilient amongst us. As our thoughts
and well wishes go to those affected by the recent bushfire crisis, I also thank the many in our community who led the way in supporting
the people directly impacted by this. We know our future is going to be positive when we see the way our children respond in times of
crisis, with many of them taking an active role in supporting those in need.
We start the year with record student enrolments for this millennium with just over 900 students attending the first two days. The first day
of school, like every other day of the year, should be filled with curiosity, excitement and laughter. It is not unusual for some students to
feel a bit anxious about moving into their new class, and if your child is experiencing this, I encourage you to make contact with your
child’s teacher so we can take action to address this sooner rather than later.
Our staff were at school last week, excited to get into the new year and learning about their new students. We
also welcome a few new staff members to our school. Please join me in welcoming: Inclusivity - Lyn Herrod
(Pierrehumbert); Prep D - Michelle Tooth; 2A - Kim Woods; 2B - Mel Kerr; 2C - Leyshani Naidu; 2D - Kristina
Craner; 3F - Eloise Hartung; 6A - Angela Diehm; 6D - Emma Madge and Kate Garcia.
Meet the Teacher
In Week 3 of this term we will again host the 2020 ‘Meet the Teacher’ evenings. This is a chance for parents and staff to get to know each
other to begin forging positive working partnerships. As we trialled last year, in between each session commencing, we will have group
sessions in the courtyard to introduce our new staff and to hear whole school messages. I would appreciate it if you were able to come
along to one of these sessions below that
commences just before your Meet the Teacher
session. There will also be food vans and stall
displays from our school community. The payment
window will also be open for payments/permission
forms.
As parents, you play an important role in the
education of your child and I hope that this will be the
beginning of a happy and rewarding relationship with
your child’s class teacher. Strong, committed
partnerships between our school and our parents
play a crucial role in our children’s development.

Welcome Back!
Welcome to our new families and welcome back to our experienced Samford State
School families. Wow 2020! Now this is the year that was always mentioned in movies
while I was growing up. Not to give away my age but I thought I would be getting to
work in a flying car in the Year 2020.
Just a few items this fortnight, I won’t bombard you while you are settling back into your
routines:
QKR
Did you know you can sign your permission forms on Qkr! - swimming
notes, SRS, RI and excursions are all uploaded to the app where you
can sign and pay (if required) all at once. This can be done anytime day
or night - now that’s handy! Email Tanya Buskens here or drop in to the
payment window if you would like further information on this app.
Instructions on how to download and use the app are included at the
end of this newsletter.
Assembly
Senior assembly (for Year 4-6 students) will commence in Week 3 on Monday
afternoon, from 2:00pm (due to Music Camp in Week 2). Senior assembly will then be
held every fortnight on even weeks (Week 4, 6, 8 and 10).
Junior assembly will be structured differently this year on Tuesdays. They will be split
across Prep - Year 3 to have two separate assemblies. On alternating weeks, we will
have Prep/Year 1 and on the other weeks, Year 2-3. The junior assemblies start from
2:00pm and run until approximately 2:20pm.
Therefore Junior assembly (for Year 2-3 students) will commence in Week 3 on
Tuesday afternoon, from 2:00pm. It will then be held every fortnight on odd weeks.
Junior assembly (for Prep/Year 1 will commence in Week 4 on Tuesday afternoon, from
2:00pm. It will then be held every fortnight on even weeks.

First Day of Prep!
What a wonderful first day of prep we had with children getting to know their teachers, meeting new friends and meeting up again with some they already knew!
There was plenty of activity on the first day and it was wonderful to see the children head home with smiling faces and great ideas about tomorrow. I’m sure they slept very well after a big first day!
It seems that ‘Roo’ was a big hit and the children were delighted that their ‘Roo’ had the same name as them! The plush kangaroos will stay with them this week and then will visit the school on special occasions throughout the year! Over the years we hope this will be a lovely memento of their time in Prep.
It was also wonderful to see the parents at the Tim Tams and Tea morning. Thank you so much to those parents who were able to come along. Don’t worry though, if you didn’t make it there will be plenty of chances to be involved throughout the year!

Support Your School...
Who and what is the P&C?
Samford’s P&C is a not-for-profit organisation working in partnership with our
Principal, Mr Clark, and the community to promote the interests of the school, facilitate its
development and further improvement, and to achieve the best possible outcomes for
students.
Run by an Executive Committee of volunteers, the P&C is responsible for OSHC, the
Uniform Shop, the Prep/Year 1 and Year 5/6 committees and Music working party. It is
also the fundraising body of the school, running events such as Mother’s Day and
Father’s Day stalls, Art Festival, Spring Festival, discos, bake sales, sausage sizzles etc.
You will no doubt see lots of updates from our new Business and Events Coordinator,
Jade. She joins us this term so please make her welcome!
Why is the P&C important?
There are plenty of things which we enjoy around our school which Education QLD
do not provide through their budgets for schools. This means that unless the P&C raises
funds to provide these things to the school, they would not be available for our children.
In the past 12 months, the P&C have contributed the following to the school:
Funds to create a nature space area, OSHC demountable,
soccer balls, worm farm, Makerspace roof, chilled bubblers,
sandstone blocks in the pick up zone, rubber soft-fall for the Prep
play area, shade sail over the senior playground, decodable texts for
Prep classes, library books, air-conditioning maintenance… the list
goes on. The year ahead will see the completion of our Makerspace
project - something very exciting for all children and teachers at the
school!
We can’t do it without YOU! How can you get involved?
P&C meetings occur twice a term and everyone is welcome to attend these
meetings. They are informal, friendly, a great way to find out what is going on around the
school and give us the opportunity to discuss the spending of hard-earned funds. Our
members will be notified of the agenda and reports prior to each meeting, so you can
keep up to date with what is happening.
Volunteers are crucial to the P&C’s success - without generous parents giving up
their time to help with events throughout the year, we wouldn’t be able to raise the funds
to improve the experience of every child at the school. You will see emails and
newsletter details about how you can help with our events and we would love for you to
get involved. There are various committees and working groups you can be involved in
too.
Don’t forget, volunteering is a great way to make new friends and feel great about
contributing to the amazing community that is Samford State School!
Our next meeting is on Monday 17 February at 6:30pm in the Seminar room (near the library). We would love to see you there!

The Three Little Pigs Catering
Hello!
Welcome to Samford State School 2020. At Samford State School, we are lucky enough to run a Chaplaincy Service 3 days a week.
Josslyn (Chappy Joss) will continue her role in 2020 at Samford State School on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Chaplain Joss
Chaplaincy
What is a Chaplain?
A School Chaplain is a safe person for young people to connect with at school and provide a listening ear,
caring presence and a message of hope. Chaplains run positive, fun activities for students and assist in
fostering supportive, caring school communities.
Working with other members of the school’s support team, the Chaplain cares for students struggling with
issues such as difficult relationships with other children or family members, poor self-esteem, family breakdown
and depression.
The partnership between the school and the Chaplaincy Service, supported by local churches, businesses and
community organisations, provides a network of local support and assistance. These positive relationships help
young people to face difficult issues and provide hope, connection, meaning, and purpose.
The Chaplaincy Service is available to everyone in the school community regardless of their religious beliefs.
What does Chaplaincy look like at Samford State School?
Chappy Joss runs regular lunch time activities for students that offer a safe space for them to feel included and
have fun. She also provides pastoral support for students who are facing a range of issues including grief,
loneliness, friendship issues and family breakdown.
Chappy Joss is involved in a range of school activities including education support, mentoring, staff wellbeing,
assisting with school performances/events and works alongside the Guidance Officer to provide support for both
students and staff. Students may request to see the Chaplain on an individual basis for support in personal
matters. Parents will be consulted if their child wishes to be involved in ongoing one-to-one meetings with the
Chaplain.
If you would like to know more about School Chaplaincy or connect with the Chaplain regarding pastoral care
referrals or what activities are on offer, please feel free to contact Josslyn through the school or email her here.
Welcome to a New Year here at OSHC
At the end of last year we recently increased to a license capacity of 150, we moved into our new demountable, we upgraded the old sandpit in the senior playground to a new learning space deck, opened up the nature space in the pine forest, added some chickens to our garden space and much, much more….let’s see what we can do in 2020.
Summer vacation care 2019/2020
What fun we had over our summer holidays…this is what we got up to.
We bounced around at revolution which was great fun and used up a lot of energy, the bus trip home was much quieter than the way there that’s for sure.
We had bricks for kids come out and hold a workshop with us in the library with four different stations for us to explore, create and play with. We had themed days as well at OSHC - one of these was our ‘job day’, in which we explored what it would be like to be a film director and create our own movies. We created our own props, popped up a green screen and used our stop motion app to create a movie for everyone to sit down to and watch at the end of the day. We also dabbled with other jobs as well and cooked pizzas and built a motorised car.
We had a couple of swim days which was well received with the hot, humid weather we have been having of late and incorporated some water slide fun with this as well. We ventured on an excursion to Laserzone where we were able to battle each other in the laser arena whilst the other children played to their hearts content in the games arcade with unlimited games.
Summer camp day was also a big hit with our final activity for the day being our watermelon eating competition which was a great laugh with everyone wanting to have a go at competing. We even had a staff competition which was a bit more competitive than the children’s competition!
We hope everyone had an amazing break whatever they got up to and we can’t wait to spend another year with everyone.

Samford Little Athletics The Little Athletics FAST 2 program will commence at Samford State School in Term 1, 2020. What is FAST? FAST is a condensed Little Athletics program. FAST or Fundamental Athletics Skills Training, is a program which runs for 1 hour each week and utilises games & skill development activities to teach the basic, fundamental movement patterns of the events experienced in a Little Athletics competition. Each 1 hour session will include one warm up activity, one running activity, one jumping activity and one throwing activity. Each of these activities are 10-15 minutes in duration, so children experience a lot of skill development in a short amount of time.
For those who participated in the FAST program earlier this year, it will follow a similar format with participants rotating through 4 activities, however this time they will do two game type activities (similar to last time), plus a rotation where they will be coached on a specific event/skill and lastly, a measured/timed activity. A modified competition will take place at the end of the 8 week period. Once again, parent involvement will be crucial in making this successful and parents are expected to stay and supervise their children at every session and help out where necessary. You are welcome to come along for a FREE trial in the first week, with payment due by the third week.
When: 5:00pm Tuesday 11 February 2020 (then every Tuesday for remainder of Term 1) Where: Samford State School oval Who: Primary aged children (4-12) Cost: $50 (8 week program)
