Week 5 - Monday 04.05.20

Hello Year 3 Children and Parents,

We hope you are all keeping well and safe and that you’ve had a good week of work, rest and play. We

have loved seeing all of your hard work so keep it up!

This week is a 4 day week because of the VE Day Bank Holiday on Friday 8th May, so you will have fewer

tasks, but you should try just as hard to make them just as good as you always do.

● Everyday:

o 30 minutes of Reading

o 15 minutes of handwriting practice: practise your handwriting by writing your spellings into

your purple handwriting book and then write a series of sentences including each of your

spelling words. Remember to use perfect punctuation! You could also try copying out a

poem or rhyme.

o 15 minutes of times tables practice: either play card games and/or play times table games

on Purple Mash.

Practise your 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 times table. When you are confident with these, move on to your

6s and 8s.

o 15 minutes of spelling practice for the weekly spelling test which is detailed below.

We expect you to practise your spellings as you normally would. Therefore the spelling

test will be open from Wednesday onwards. This will give you time to learn the words

before you take the test.

● Once a week:

o Reading Blog: A blog is a way of sharing information and opinions. When you log onto

Purple Mash, click on the ‘Sharing icon’ and then on ‘Shared Blogs’ there you will see

‘Redbridge Reading Blog’ or ‘London Bridge Reading Blog’ or ‘Putney Bridge Reading Blog’

click on your class to access it

This week please write a review of the book you are reading or one you have recently read.

The review should be at least a paragraph long. We have written a post on the blog

explaining what we expect. We will be checking the blog regularly in order to approve posts.

We will only approve posts that have been checked first for punctuation and spelling.

Some prompts to help you:

- Who is the author/ illustrator?

- Why you liked/ disliked about the book?

- Who was your favourite character? / What was your favourite part?

- Would you recommend it to a friend and why?

Please click the green add button in the top right corner to create your post.

We will be asking you to create a review of what you have read each week. Once you have

written your own review, you could have a go at writing some positive comments on other

people’s posts.

o Purple Mash reading activity: We will be continuing with our texts Beth on the Nile and Little Red. You

will find a 2do linking you to chapter 4 followed by some 2do activities based on that chapter. This

week, we have also attached a sequencing activity for Beth on the Nile that you can print off and answer

after reading the chapter online.

My Secret Code is a 2do linked to Beth on the Nile - In the story hieroglyphs have been used to create a

message. Use the template to create your own hieroglyphs or secret code. Write a message to us using

your code. Will we be able to crack your code?

Please make sure you have read the chapter twice over before attempting any 2do activities linked to it.

o Spelling: The spellings for this week are below. We have set a ‘Spelling Test 2do’ on Purple Mash. Please

make sure that you practise the spellings on paper each day, as instructed above. Please DO NOT take

the 2do test until you are confident with the spellings. The spelling test 2do will open on Thursday.

Please take the time to learn your spellings!

PLEASE NOTE – This week the spelling words will not flash up on the screen. Instead you will need to

press the sound button to hear the spelling word that you are being tested on. Make sure the sound on

your computer or tablet is turned up!

Week 5 spellings

medal, victory, Europe, celebrate, century, history, early,

earth, famous, imagine

Lauren’s Group Spellings:

make, came, snake, rain, train, snail, because, people, only, many

Maths: This week you have 2 MyMaths Tasks. Please make sure you go through the ‘Lesson’ activities

before doing the main task. This should preferably be done with an adult.

1. MyMaths - Introduction to perimeter

2. MyMaths - Using rounding

Writing Activity:

1) Below, you will see an image. You should recognise some of the things in the picture from our

topic. Start this activity by asking someone at home to close their eyes as you describe the image to

them (don’t let them see the picture!). When you think you’ve described it as best you can, ask

them to describe back to you what image they have in their mind. If this is a good match, let them

see the picture. If not, keep going until they can visualise exactly what you can see. Use the word

bank below to help you.

2) Next, use this along with the word bank and marking ladder (provided) to help you write a

descriptive paragraph based on this image on the lines below. Fill these lines and give as much

detail as possible. Don’t forget to check your punctuation also! You can fill in your marking ladder

when you have finished and check and edit anything that you have missed.

Word Bank Marking Ladder

VE Day Activity: Your task is to create a medal for British soldiers who served in the Second World War.

Be as symbolic and creative as you can be. You can use the template shown below or you can draw your own. Your

medal can be any shape or size. You can read the information text below to help you with you research on VE Day

and to help you plan what will be on your medal.

Consider including:

The years of the war (1939-1945)

The colours (you might want to do a bit of your own research to see what colours represented allies)

A symbol to signify the war and the soldier’s sacrifice and victory

Please either annotate or write a couple fo sentences at the bottom to explain what your medal represents and why

you chose to show it.

Please note that Reading, Spellings and Maths activities are all differentiated. Your child

has been set activities which are tailored to a level appropriate to them. These may differ

from the activities set for other pupils in the class.

We hope you have a great week. Keep working hard and trying your best. Have fun!

We’re thinking of you…
