What an amazing week we have had at wonderful Windsor High School. Wellbeing week was a huge success because of the very hard work of our Head Teacher Welfare- Ms Khalid and her team of Ms Oppy and the SWAT (Student Wellbeing Awareness Team). It was packed full of proactive pro-grams that help our students develop and mature with resilience and aware-ness that will hold them in good stead for the future.

At our Tuesday morning assembly, we congratulated Brayden and Renee on being our High Flyers of the

week receiving the most VIVO awards of all the students at the school.

We also congratulated Mr Sebastian for being drawn out of the hat for distributing all of his VIVO points for the

week.

Lachlan has accumulated enough VIVO awards to receive a Year Advisors award, receiving his certificate on

assembly.

Staff were asked to participate in ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ where each was allocated a secret buddy, who

they then provided small gifts or acts of kindness during the week. Students helped by delivering the act of

kindness. Ms Ruis actually was ‘serenaded’ by two students who performed a song written about her titled

‘Nice Nice Lady’ (to the music ‘Ice Ice Baby’) and below is a present being delivered to Ms Oppy whilst we

were on assembly.

Some of our Aboriginal students completed an incredible cultural journey when they attended a cultural leader-

ship camp to Brewongle Environmental Education Centre with other Aboriginal student leaders from Hawkes-

bury High School, Colo High School, Chifley College and Cherrybrook Technology High School. With the guid-

ance of experts Uncle Dean and John Kelly, they completed the making of a traditional canoe in two days.

This was part of a Leadership program - Warrawi Yana Nura (stand tall, walk tall on Country). The students

assisted in all parts of the process including weaving all the rope, preparing the bark and making the canoe

(nowey). We are grateful to the Uncles for sharing their amazing knowledge and spirits with us over the last

two days.

Year 8 participated in a Mindfulness Day - they chose 3 different activities to help reduce stress and anxiety. Year 7 participated in the Optus Digital Thumbprint and during Period 4 both Year 7 and 8 watched a drama production called Verbal Combat. Brainstorm Productions requested a photo of our students to promote RU-OK? Day in their promotion- al materials.

The SWAT team organized lolly bags to be distributed and made ‘frogs in a pond’ to hand out for free.

The annual handball competition was again very popular- big congratulations to Jacob for becoming the

Handball Comp Champion 2018 and well done to Patrick for outstanding sportsmanship.

Wellbeing Week - Day 3 was full of fun. We started off the day with breakfast supplied by Hawkesbury Helping

Hands. Year 7 participated in the High Resolves Program exploring the concept of collect identity.

For the first time we had a game of Bubble Soccer, where Year 12 students formed a team to play against the teachers. The staff took the game very seriously and won 11-5 against the students.

Year 12 Bubble Soccer Team The Teacher Bubble Soccer Team

The Year 10 Apprenticeship Group went to Nirimba TAFE and explored some of the courses available there.

Workers from Lendlease Community Service Program and NASCA worked at our school on Thursday to im-prove our facilities! Thank you so much. They installed external ping-pong tables, built a vertical garden for the support unit, painted furniture, built an archives storeroom in the library and poured concrete footings for

outdoor umbrellas!

Wellbeing Week Day 4, RUOK? Day, great games, karaoke in the quad, and a visit from many Hawkesbury

Youth Services.

Miss Talidu’s ‘Artist of the week’ is Shonelle in Year 8. Shonelle always does her best and demonstrates

strong design skills and a positive attitude. Well done Shonelle!

Mrs West’s student of the week is Ainsley. She performed for the first time at our recent music concert. Keep

up the good work Ainsley!

Delicious delights in HSIE!

This term has seen some very interesting and creative projects from students in both our History and Geogra-

phy classes. Year 7 Geography have been studying “Landscapes, Landforms and Disasters”. Students have

gone beyond the study of how volcanoes function in class by participating in our ‘edible models’ homework

task. They made some amazing (and delicious) cakes and food creations! Here you can see some incredible

‘Volcano cakes’. Some were vanilla or chocolate flavoured, others made from a range of lollies or marshmal-

lows covered in melted chocolate, one of which was even designed to explode with strawberry topping which

shoots out the top! We also had edible models of Ayers rock, and some great river and lake systems made

from jelly and edible sand made from biscuit crumbs! Well done to all our brilliant and very inventive “History

Chefs”! Keep your eye out in the newsletter and WHS Facebook page for more edible models from other HSIE

classes over the next 2 weeks!!

Year 8 classes have begun to bring in outstanding models and dioramas of Viking Artefacts. Some students

have made very authentic looking Viking shields with amazing decorative elements. We also have a few replicas

of the Viking god of Thunder’s weapon of choice - ‘Thor’s Hammer’! Other students have created amazing pro-

jects for a Viking Feast, complete with invitations, place settings, and Viking menus and recipes. And the final

option was designing a Viking Raid ‘Battle Plan’ against an English Settlement. Check out the great ‘edible mod-

el’ of a Viking Shield below, as well as 8A’s impressive paper replicas of ‘Viking Longships’.

We continued the themes of ‘food’ and eating in Year 11 Society & Culture class with

our regular video-conferences with students at Chungmu High School in South Korea.

Last week’s presentation focused on learning the favourite foods and traditional meals in

each culture. We taught the Koreans about ‘aussie staples’ such as vegemite, laming-

tons, Tim Tams, ANZAC biscuits and the tradition of the ‘great aussie bbq’. They taught

us about ‘imchee’ and ‘gimchi’ - a traditional Korean side dish made of vegetables and

seasonings served up on their trays in the school cafeteria each day (which you can see

in this photo) as well as ‘Ramen’ which is a traditional soup. Our students were shocked

at the popularity of ‘chicken feet’ in Korea, as well as a strange looking delicacy which

turned out to be ‘silkworm larvae’. We commented they looked a little like one of our in-

digenous bush tuckers - ‘witchity grubs’. We then learnt about ‘etiquette’ regarding how

you eat in both countries and we were surprised to find that in Korea most meals are eat-

en whilst sitting crossed-legged on the floor. Another difference is that in Korea you do not have to eat with your

mouth closed, but one similarity we all shared was that ‘burping’ at the table is definitely considered to be rude.

Over the next week we went out and found some of the foods they had shown us. Mi-

khaela found some of them at Coles! We then taste tested them in front of the Korean

students during this week’s video conference. Jessica and Mikhaela commented the

‘Shrimp Crackers” (a popular savoury snack) were OK, but a little too ‘fishy tasting’. But

the real shock came when we tasted what looked like the Korean version of ‘2 Minute

Noodles’ in a cup. They might look the same but poor Analyse was left coughing and splut-

tering as they are very, VERY HOT! The Korean students were very entertained at her reac-

tion – but Annabelle said she actually liked them as she enjoys spicy foods.

Stay posted for more entertaining news in next week’s newsletter about our HSIE “Yr 8 Vi-

king Challenge Day” which students are very excited about this Friday 21st September.

SRC News

As the term comes to a close, the SRC has been busy participating in a number of school

based events with the school and the wider community. Some of these activities have

included participating and assisting in the White Ribbon Cup. The message we aimed to

share, with the support of the student body and the wider community is that Windsor

High School says “NO” to violence and in particular, violence against women. The SRC

has also actively been involved in ‘Wellbeing Week’ which aims to focus on student’s

individual wellbeing, with a range of activities being conducted throughout the week.

A major event to look forward to is a 70s and 80s Themed Mufti Day which will be held on Monday the 24th of Sep-

tember. Students will have the opportunity to dress up in their favourite 70s and 80s inspired outfit in return for a gold

coin donation. We aim to fundraise money for an outdoor picnic table in the senior quad. For those who have forgotten

or who are too young to remember the 1970s and 1980s was a time when the biggest box office movies included Jaws,

Grease, E.T. and Dirty Dancing. In terms of fashion it was important to be diverse for people to express themselves

through their clothing. This was the era of retro, hippie and punk. The general style for both men and women were

‘Long and Lean’ accompanied with long hair and large earrings. Trends such as ripped tights, high top shoes, bleached

jeans and bright coloured shirts where the norm. Please note that students must be in fully covered shoes.
