Guns N' Roses ships near half -millionIt's taken over four years for Guns N' Roses tofollow up their multi -platinum debut AppetiteFor Destruction. But apparently the wait hasbeen worth it as G N'R have over 220,000orders each from retail outlets for their UseYour Illusion and Use Your Illusion II releases.
MCA's vice-president of marketing, SteveTennant, was understandably ecstatic about theretailer's enthusiasm and called the two albums
"equally amazing."Long known as the most volatile,
unpredictable group in rock, the Gunnersdecision to release two albums simultaneouslydefies conventional industry wisdom, but whocan argue with success? To further defy convention G N'R's Use YourIllusion I and Use Your Illusion II will beavailable in double album vinyl form along withsingle cassette and CD.
The first single off Illusion I is Don't Cry, apower ballad that will also be onIllusion II with
different lyrics.
Hoskins' Labelling Blueswins Bronze Media AwardLabelling Blues, a video by Gregory Hoskinsand the Stickpeople, has won the Bronze MediaAward, Entertainment/Television from theCanadian Association for Community Living(CACL).
Ronald E. Smith, President of CACL,explains that the annual Media Award honoursprograms, articles and personalities "who havemade outstanding efforts to promote theparticipation of people who have an intellectualdisability in their communities."
The song, from Moon Come Up, Hoskins'debut for the label, recounts the real lifeexperience of Pat Worth who was mistakenlylabelled retarded and spent nine years in aninstitution. The judges were impressed with the"good use pf poetry, rhythm and images" of theLabelling Blues video.
The video was directed by Ian French forNorthern Lights Productions.
The award will be presented at the closingbanquet of the annual national conference ofCACL which will be held at the Ottawa CongressCentre on Oct. 5.
Alias platinum to YTV's Rock 'N Talk (I to r)Capitol's Liz McElheran, Freddie Curchl, Rock 'NTalk host Laurie Hibberd, Steve DeMarchl andRock 'N Talk music coordinator Fran Walsh.
There is no intended difference in directionor approach between the two albums with onecover song on each album, McCartney's Liveand Let Die on Illusion I and Dylan's Knockin'on Heaven's Door on Illusion II.
In between all the drug rehabs, law suits, arrests, sacking and replacing their drummer, internal fights and chaos, it's a minor miraclethat G N'R is still intact. But intact they are andit will be interesting to see how the public andindustry responds to their unique approach torock and roll.
Hamilton area stationlaunches dance formatBurlington, Ontario's FM 108 (CING), is thefirst station in the much -watched and listened toGolden Horseshoe, to introduce a Monday toFriday 24 -hour dance music format.
With the CRTC easing rules regardingformat changes, it was expected that a majorToronto station would make the first move, which makes the FM 108 format changesomewhat ironic. The station's listening areadoes cover the Toronto and Hamilton marketadequately, not to mention Buffalo, and couldtake up the slack caused when Buffalo's MAGIC102 dropped its dance format.
It's expected that as well as dance, the newformat will also lend itself to R&B, hip -hop,funk, rap and reggae. Expanding the danceformat to weekends is in the works.

A view from the top
BMG batting 1000 on Cancon US releasesBMG Music Canada currently boasts a 100%release pattern in the US for their Canadianrecording acts. However, as Bob Jamieson, president of the Canadian operation points out, there was a heavy concentration on domesticproduct prior to his taking over.
"Projects were coming together at the timeof my arrival that we felt comfortable to release,"he explains. "We went back in to re -work someothers."
Cancon acts that have been released in the'US are Crash Test Dummies (Arista), The JeffHealey Band (a BMG/Arista split), CowboyJunkies (RCA), Prairie Oyster (RCA Nashville),Big House (RCA), Sheree Jeacocke (RCA). Thelatest signing, Love & Sas (formerly Oui 3), isexpected to be released on either RCA or Arista.
Some projects have been in the works forquite a while that have finally been completed.Jamieson points out that the company hasn'tincreased its signing levels, "there were projectsin the works and David (Bendeth) was holdingback because he wasn't confident that theyshould come out at the time, so he re -finishedthem . . . now they are ready to come out."
Some parent companies are hesitant torelease Cancon records, yet Jamieson feels veryencouraged by the interest from the US andother territories. "I think it's the quality of themusic," says Jamieson. "It's not a secret .. . thequality of the music is there. Because we've hadsuccess with Crash Test Dummies and positivemomentum. People in the US are starting torecognize this is the A&R source that it can beand has been over the years."
Jamieson's approach to his Americancounterparts and other territories borders on
"What we have to do is reallyzero in on trying to make as
much noise as we can about ourCanadian music overall. "
being somewhat heavy handed. "Well, youhave to shake these people up," he muses. TheAmericans have so much on their plate and theyhave so many things going on. Our music ismore important to us then it is to them, and we
BMG Music Canada President Bob Jamiesonflanked by Daryl Hall and John Oates.
have to be in their face... but that's the case withany country, it's not just the United States. You've got to be in the face of everyone of thesecountries in order to keep their eye on the ball. You just have to aggressively promote yourmusic."
Jamieson stresses however that gettingrecords established in Canada first is necessary,"Because there are very few records that haveever been successful in other markets withouthome market success." He goes on to stress,"What we have to do is really zero in on tryingto make as much noise as we can about ourCanadian music overall. It's not just BMG'smusic, it's everybody's music."
As far as building BMG's artist base,Jamieson credits the artists, "who are makinggood records, and David Bendeth, who is on aroll right now . . . he's very hot. We have theresources to make records that are worldwidecompetitive and that's what we're trying to do."He also points to the timing of release asimportant and the care that goes into productionand set-up before release. "I'd rather take thetime and make the record very strong withaminim um of three singles, and we look for fouror more, before we put the record out."
BMG is the only major with a downtownToronto base, which Jamieson believes is anasset. "I think being down here and close to theaction is important," he confides. "We haveartists coming in here quite regularly. We alsoget people dropping in, so I think the location iscertainly positive. But I think it's the wholepackage. What we're trying to do is represent avery visible and competitive record companyand treat the music with the kind of respect itdeserves."
Jamieson also stresses that radio is a majorfactor in breaking Canadian records "in thesense that the Canadian content regulationscertainly gives records exposure." He believesthe regulations are important "in the near term. . . but I'd like to think that in five years we asan industry would be respected enough that wewouldn't need the regulations."
Video shows are also an asset, saysJamieson. "MuchMusic and MusiquePlus havebeen very positive in their support of artists. They are far more enjoyable to work with thanMTV which is so fragmented and so tight and soregimented that it's very boring."
On the downside, Jamieson points to theconcert business in North America in general as
"... Video, in a kind ofleft-handed way, may have
been a detriment to theconcert business ..."
being in trouble. "Rod Stewart has done well,Alan Jackson and Randy Travis did well, but,"he points to "a lot of shows that have had to becancelled, or went on with disappointingly smallaudiences. The concert business is reallyhurting."
Jamieson cites too many acts and ticketprices that are too high, going on to point out
that "Video, in a kind of left-handed way, mayhave been a detriment to the concert business.Because the kids, by watching video, can gettheir fill or get a pretty good impression of theartist without having to go and see them. Andsome artists just aren't that good on video andthe audience sees that. They may like the songsand they may want to buy the record, but I'm notsure they want to see the act for $26.00 or$35.00, because they don't look that cool onvideo. It's a dimension that the kids have theopportunity to look into today that they didn'thave ten years ago."
Taking a look at the industry in general,Jamieson believes there are signs that retail iscoming back. "We're encouraged by what wesee." he says, "We're not blowing the numbersaway, but it's looking better. Certainly withsome of the major releases; the Bryan Adams, the Guns N' Roses and records like that comingout, retail will pick up and record buyers willhopefully start going backinto the stores. There'sgoing to be a lot of great music coming out overthe next three months."
He points out that the tradition ofreleasingthe big hitters in the fall is important. "That'swhen we make most of our money," he stresses,"the last four months of the year are important. So if you can get it out at this time and into theracks and visible, you have the chance to sell tothe largest number of people ... your dollars gofurther then."
BMG is also doing more as a companythen before, Jamieson admits. The companyreleased its first TV package, Country Heat, andthereis now a heavy concentration on catalogue.BMG's Tim Williams and Norman Miller arecurrently crossing the country on "a catalogueroadshow," says Jamieson, "re -introducing ourcatalogue. We were just not in the game. Butwe've done a lot internally to try to re -positionit. We're going on the road with a contest and apromotion and aprogram to re -stimulate and re-introduce our catalogue to show the accountsthat we are serious and that there is business forboth of us.
"No record company can sit around waitingfor the next 'big thing'," Jamieson admonishes."Because, while waiting, a lot of time can go byand a lot of business can be lost. I'd like to seeus have a million -selling item like they did hereeach year for the last four years . . . that makesa big difference in your bottom line. But it's nota way to run a business." He concludes with, I'drather have that million seller be the icing on thecake as opposed to the cake."

COVER STORY - by Pablo Fairhall
West End Girls surface with"Striking" is the word that comes to mind whenfirst meeting Vancouver's West End Girls. Onfurther scrutiny, one finds this young three-some to be energetic, talented and having theright attitude to excel in the dance genre. Theyare currently signed to A&M with their self -titled debut. Their first single, Not Like KissingYou, made it into the Top 20 of RPM's HitTracks and their second single, I Want YouBack, is currently #22.
The West End Girls are CamilleHenderson, Aimee MacKenzie and SivanaPetrozzi. 21 -year old Henderson started takingballet at age four and excelled in all styles ofdance by her teens. She took fine arts at collegeand had been taking acting when she became aWest End Girl. "My family's been involved inthe performing arts, too, so it sort of fell intoplace," she says. Her father, Bill Henderson(Chilliwack), produced the vocals for theirdebut.
18 -year old Petrozzi is originally fromSouth America and also comes from a musicalfamily. She formed her first band at agefourteen and played in clubs and pubs, "any-where we could get gigs," she recalls.
MacKenzie the youngest of the trio at 16,was born in New Jersey. She started out as adancer, learning tap and jazz and she says, "Ididn't really plan on being a singer, I thoughtI'd be a dancer." After being spotted singingwith some friends, "just for fun", she was askedto audition for the group. She describes being inthe group as, "a dream come true."Interestingly, she is the only member of thegroup still in school. Not naive about the upsand downs of the music business, she isadamant on finishing school.
The concept of the band originated withJohn Dexter, who also produced their album."We were a concept group," admits Petrozzi.

second single"They wanted a three girl group that fit thesound and image they were looking for. Fromthere on it developed into something theyweren't expecting, which is; we have reallystrong personalities that come out in ourmusic."
For this album, Dexter had already writtenthe songs and had the concept of the albumdown on paper. But plans are in the works forthe next album, and the girls are open to pensome of their own material.

Tune's Grand Hotelbooked into O'KeefeA road production of Tommy Tune's Broadwayhit musical, Grand Hotel, will play Toronto'sO'Keefe Centre for eight performances (Oct. 29to Nov. 3). The musical won five 1990 TonyAwards, including Direction and Choreographyby Tune.
Liliane Montevecchi, who earned a Tonynomination for her work in the Broadwayproduction, takes a starring role in the roadshow.
CRTC endorsement forBroadcast StandardsThe CRTC has expressed its full support for theCanadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC),and announced that complaints regarding issuescovered by the industry codes which the CBSCadministers will now be referred directly to theCouncil.
The announcement stems from anextensive consultation process which began in1986, when the Canadian Association ofBroadcasters (CAB) proposed the concept of anindustry council to encourage excellence inbroadcasting and to ensure compliance withindustry standards. CAB represents the largemajority of Canada's privately -owned radioand television stations, over 80% of which arealso members of the CBSC.
CRTC Acting Chairman, David Colville said,"the Standards Council provides a valuablemechanism for the industry and the public toresolve concerns about avariety of programmingand operational issues before they reach thepoint where the Commission would need tobecome involved. We have followed thedevelopment of the CBSC carefully and areencouraged by the support it has received fromthe industry. It is an important signal thatbroadcasters are committed to assuming moredirect accountability to the public."
While the CRTC is satisfied with thecomplaints process established by the Council,it retains its full authority under the BroadcastingAct and is sensitive to public concerns aboutprogram quality on radio and television. Therefore, the Commission will require theCouncil to file reports on its activities and willundertake a review of the CBSC's success inthree years.

Lions game, the Girls admit to being anxious totour. "There's been a lot of opportunity," saysHenderson, "but nothing quite right." Petrozziadds, "It all depends on how much the publicwants us." "I hope we get to travel a lot and Ihope a lot of people get exposed to the music,"concludes Henderson.

Adams ties record! Bryan Adams' (EverythingI Do) I Do It For You holds the No. 1 positionfor the eighth week. That ties it with Joan Jett &The Blackhearts' I Love Rock N' Roll as thesong holding the top spot the longest. I Do It ForYou even has a chance to remain on top for onemore week, although Rod Stewart 's The MotownSong appears ready to take over.
Has it been that long . . ? Metallica's self -titled album climbs to No. 2 and will likely reachthe top next week. If it reaches No. 1, it will bethe first self -titled album from a male solo artistor male -fronted act to do so since Asia turnedthe trick way back in 1982. Since then, fivefemale solo artists and one female trio havedone it. Name the last six artists with a self -titledalbum to hit No. 1 on the Albums chart. Hint:They've all come within the last five and a halfyears.
The hot movers ... In addition to having theNo. 1 song for the past two months, BryanAdams also has the hottest song this week. Can't Stop This Thing We Started jumps 65places to No. 32. Songs from Tom Cochrane,Karyn White and Bad English also had moves ofmore than 25 spots.
New names on the chart. Of the seven newsongs on the Hit Tracks chart, none are from anartist who had ever been on the chart before ayear ago. Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch leadthe way with Good Vibrations entering at No.75.
A country resurgence! As Garth Brooks' NoFences album drop off the chart, two new countryalbums enter. Ricky Van Shelton's Backroadsdebuts at No. 91 while High Lonesome fromRandy Travis bows at No. 96.
Did you get them all? The last six artists witha self -titled album reaching No. I are: MariahCarey, Wilson Phillips, Alannah Myles, TracyChapman, Tiffany, and Whitney Houston.

Rick Warner's huge guitar, complete with built-inradio, won him the Show Us Your CHAM contestand the grand prize of a VCR.
Douglas was busy promoting his album, touring as both a headliner and opening forsome of the big names of that day including theStray Cats, Georgia Satellites, Carl Perkins andThe Blasters. He decided to take a short hiatusand concentrate on writing and producing. Aftermaking several trips to Nashville, he decided tomove there permanently.
Nashville boasts a large and very successfulCanadian community, and it wasn't long beforeDouglas met up with Gilles Godard, perhapsone of Canada's most successful out -of -countryproducers. Douglas is now maintaining a hecticschedule of writing, producing and playingguitar and keyboards on sessions, and workingclosely with Godard. He is a staff writer for bothEMI and Sony/Tree publishing companies.
Kelita's latest chart single, Merry -Go -Round, released on Godard's Bookshop label, was co -written by Douglas with Kelita. Thesong was recently covered by Trilogy artistKimberley Richards. The new album by EddieEastman, to be released on Bookshop, containstwo Douglas songs, one, the title track. Bothtracks are scheduled to be singles.
As well, Lori Yates, has just completedrecording three song which she and Douglasco -wrote, and Scott Dibble's Watertown bandrecently recorded a track that both he and Douglaswrote for their upcoming WEA album.
Godard is also producing three Douglascompositions forcountry singer Diane Ticknor'sdebut album.
Douglas is also developing a gospel projectas writer/producer. He is also working in thestudio with Joy White, a new signing to theColumbia label. They are working together onsong material for her debut album to be producedby Paul Worley, who produced sessions for PamTillis, Kevin Welch and Wild Rose.

Montreal's CFCF opts forcontemporary countryMontreal's CFCF AM, Canada's first radiostation, has changed its call letters to CIQC andeffectively brought country back to the city. The contemporary country music format wasintroduced to Montrealers on Sept. 9 whenCountry 600 - CIQC-AM went to air.
The station's Program Director, AndreChevalier, explained that the decision to bringa country music format back to Montreal wasmade "in response to the tremendous success itis enjoying across Canada and throughout NorthAmerica," continuing with, "This success is, inpart, a result of the high quality production thecountry music industry has experienced overthe past ten years." He concludes with,"Montrealers can now turn to Country 600 -CIQC for the best in contemporary countrymusic."
Country music has made impressive gainsin Canadian radio over the past few years.Country radio is the ratings leader in three majorcities in Canada; Calgary, Halifax and Hamilton.
Mount Royal Broadcasting purchasedCFCF-AM and sister station CFQR-FM fromCFCF Inc. in 1988. CFCF Inc. also owns andoperates CFCF Television in Montreal. Withthe. AM radio operation no longer part of CFCFInc. the change in call letters was necessary to'avoid confusion in the marketplace.
