Welcome everyone. I hope you all enjoyed your week and especially Australia Day with family and friends or went to one of the many celebration events that were still on in our locality or on Sydney Harbour. Unfortunately due to the heavy rain we experienced on Wednesday 25

th we decided to cancel our yearly Breakfast and Flag Raising Ceremony at

Kellyville. Thank you to Graeme Rohan for the setup and then dismantling of all the signs, banners & bunting and also to Jim Sifonios for assisting in the organisation of the event and also for contacting dignitaries and council of our decision to cancel. Hopefully next year the weather won’t be against us. Tonight I would like to welcome Pam Wilson from The Hills Historical Society who will be talking to us about our local history on The Battle of Vinegar Hill and The Castle Hill Rebellion. President Penny Hill

Rotary receives about 2.5 million United airline miles for humanitarian projects Thank you to all those at United -- including President and CEO Jeff Smisek -- for their generosity and the opportunity to participate in United's 10 Million Charity Miles Giveaway. And thank you to everyone who voted for us. We couldn't have done it without your participation and persistence. International Services Director’s Report

Polio Eradication Program

On the 17

th January 2012

Rotary surpassed the Bill Gates Foundation Challenge and has raised US$202.6 million. In recognition of Rotary’s early achievement the Foundation has granted a further $50 million to the cause. Rotarians

throughout the World have a right to be proud of this achievement. Well done Rotary. Although this achievement is a milestone in the journey to the ultimate goal of eradicating polio the work continues. The Hills-Kellyville Club will play a part in this when they hold their polio awareness night on the 23

rd February. Please

note this date as a special event to which we encourage you to bring partners and friends. Pins

and books will be on sale on the night.

Rotary Friendship Exchange with District 3040

From 13th

- 22nd

May 2012 the District is hosting a team of three couples and single lady on a Rotary friendship exchange. It is many years since our district has had such an exchange and these events are great opportunity to appreciate the internationality of Rotary.

The group will be staying in the Hills from the 20th

to the 23

rd May and Barry Philps who is co-

ordinating the visit is seeking Rotarians who would like to host any of the visitors during their visit to this area. The plan is to try and involve as many of the Clubs in the zone as possible.

If you are able to assist, please let Bobby Redman know and she will pass the information along to Barry.

103rd International RI Convention Bangkok,

Thailand.

This convention is promising to be one of the most interesting and exciting yet and will be excellent value with the lowest registration fee in years at only US$160 for Rotarians and guests. The

cost of food, lodging and transportation is also very economical so why don’t you consider attending this convention from 6

th – 9

th May in the

Land of a Thousand Smiles.

Rotary Foundation Thought for the week.

This week's Rotary Foundation Thought is about what Ambassadorial Scholars can achieve. Probably Australia’s most famous Ambassadorial Scholar is Sir William Deane AC. He was a Justice of the High Court and Australia’s 22nd Governor General. Locally many Ambassadorial Scholars have gone to achieve impressive careers, including Professor Dominic Dwyer sponsored by Mosman club. He was a GSE Team Member to India in 1986 and then as an Ambassadorial Scholar studied Infectious Diseases in 1989 at the Institute Pasteurs in Paris. Today Professor Dominic Dwyer is a medical virologist and infectious diseases physician, and is Director of the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Laboratory Services, at Westmead Hospital He has a clinical and research interest in viral diseases and antiviral drug resistance of public health importance, and runs a clinical trials unit in antiviral drugs and vaccines. He assists State and National governments in planning for pandemic influenza and emerging infections, and is actively involved in outbreak investigations. Professor Dominic Dwyer has undertaken various overseas projects, including with the World Health Organization during the SARS outbreak in Beijing, with the Australian Government in Vietnam for avian influenza and the Maldives for tsunami relief, with the University of Sydney in Malaysia and the Sudan for HIV, and for public health regulatory bodies in New Zealand and Hong Kong. Time to register for this year’s District Conference in Wollongong. With the close vicinity and short travelling time from Sydney organisers are expecting high registrations this year. Accommodation is booking out fast, so don’t miss your opportunity to attend and share a few fun days with Rotarian friends, old and new.

The Hills-Kellyville Club will be showcasing the Bourke project – do please come along and offer your support. So far there are six definite attendees from the Club – it would be great to double that number.

See Bobby Redman for more information.

‘Friend of Rotary’ We welcome our first ‘Friend of Rotary’ member, Michael Richardson. Michael Richardson has registered as our first ‘Friend of Rotary’, we all appreciate the long standing relationship that Michael has had with Rotary, he has supported our community projects over the years and become a personal friend to many of us. 2012-13 RI Theme 'Peace Through Service'

By Megan Ferringer and Arnold R. Grahl Rotary International News -- 16 January 2012

RI President-elect Sakuji Tanaka unveiled the 2012-13 RI theme, Peace Through Service, during the opening plenary session of the 2012 International Assembly, a training event for incoming Rotary district governors.

Tanaka unveiled the RI theme during the opening plenary session of the 2012 International Assembly, a training event for incoming Rotary district governors.

"Peace, in all of the ways that we can understand it, is a real goal and a realistic goal for Rotary," he said. "Peace is not something that can only be achieved through agreements, by governments, or through heroic struggles. It is something that we can find and that we can achieve, every day and in many simple ways."

Peace has different meanings for different people, Tanaka said.

"No definition is right, and no definition is wrong," he said. "However we use the word, this is what peace means for us.

"No matter how we use, or understand the word, Rotary can help us to achieve it," he added.

Tanaka, a businessman from the greater Tokyo metropolitan area, shared how becoming a Rotarian

broadened his understanding of the world. After joining the Rotary Club of Yashio, in 1975, he said, he began to realize that his life's purpose was not to make more money, but to be useful to other people.

"I realized that by helping others, even in the simplest of ways, I could help to build peace," Tanaka said.

He noted that the Japanese tradition of putting the needs of society above the needs of the individual helped his country rebuild after the tsunami and earthquake in March.

"This is a lesson that I think the whole world can learn from, in a positive way. When we see the needs of others as more important than our own needs -- when we focus our energies on a shared goal that is for the good of all -- this changes everything," he said. "It changes our priorities in a completely fundamental way. And it changes how we understand the idea of peace."

Tanaka will ask Rotarians to focus their energy on supporting the three priorities of the RI Strategic Plan , he said. He added that he will ask the incoming leaders to promote three Rotary peace forums, to be held in Hiroshima, Japan; Berlin; and Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.

“In Rotary, our business is not profit. Our business is peace,” he said. “Our reward is not financial, but the happiness and satisfaction of seeing a better, more peaceful world, one that we have achieved through our own efforts.”

Joke of the Day –

A guy sticks his head in the barber shop and asks, "How long before I can get a haircut?" The barber looks around the shop and says, "About two hours." The guy leaves.

A few days later, the same guy sticks his head in the door and asks, "How long before I get a haircut?" The barber looks around the shop full of customers and says, "About two hours." The guy leaves.

A week later, the same guy sticks his head in the shop and asks, "How long before I can get a haircut?" The barber looks around the shop an says, "About an hour and half." The guy leaves.

The barber looks over at a friend in the shop and says, "Hey Bill, follow that guy and see where he goes." In a little while, Bill comes back into the shop laughing hysterically. The barber asks, "Bill, where did he go when he left here?" Bill looked up and said, "To your house."
