3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time – 26th January 2020 Emergency Phone 027 224 2100

Fr Vui’s Thanksgiving Mass 18th January - Vinh, Viet Nam

Fr Vui surrounded by his family, fellow priests and Bishop Paul Martin in Fr Vui’s hometown of Vinh, Vietnam. Fr Vui told the congregation which numbered over 2000 of his gratitude for the love and support the people in the Catholic parish of NP have extended to him.

Happy New Year to Parishioners!2020 is well underway. The Parish Leadership Team has plans for 2020 to nurture our Catholic community into missional disciples. Alpha, our main evangelization tool, will begin on 22 February. It is the way, we have, to facilitate an encounter with Jesus Christ, the God of mercy. Please start considering who you could invite to this coming Alpha. We will have invitation cards produced soon. To invite people to Alpha will be a significant step towards becoming a missional parish. Our hospitality team will start providing morning tea after Mass at St Joseph’s soon and at OLHC when the foyer is complete. To welcome and connect with others after Mass is key to our building meaningful community. It is important to welcome those we do not know.

Ash Wednesday is on 26 February, 40 days of Lent, then we celebrate the Easter Triduum beginning with Mass of the Last Supper on Thursday 9 April and the Easter Vigil on 11 April. We have 6 adults in the RCIA, Adults becoming Catholic process. We need some parishioners to act as sponsors for these people. If you could be a sponsor please let us know.

Hopefully most people are adapting to the new Sunday Mass schedule. Weekday Mass times return to normal this week.

The foyer build at OLHC is starting to take shape. As it will not be completed until March there will be some disruption to the normal routine of the parish and St John Bosco school. Masses will need to continue at Adele Chapel 9:10am on weekdays until March. A new presbytery for the priests to reside has been designed and will be built this year by Hassall Homes at the Brooklands site. The diocese has given the parish approval and we await resource consent. Each priest will have a bedroom and bathroom, a study/lounge. There will be a communal kitchen, dining room and tv room. Attached garaging for 3 cars. There will be a presbytery warming!

Investigation into a refurbishment and possible liturgical layout change at St Joseph’s is continuing with a presentation regarding this on Thursday 20 Feb. Fr Vui is away until mid-February with his family in Vietnam. Fr Fergus Reeves has been unwell, please keep him in your prayers. Due to this 9.30am Sunday masses will not be celebrated at Adele at present.

MESSAGE FROM THE MENS SHELTERA few days before Christmas I was invited to come to St Joseph's and collect gifts for the Homeless Men's Shelter which had been donated by the Catholic Parish of New Plymouth congregation.

I would like to sincerely thank you for those amazing and generous gifts which have, and will be, very much appreciated by those with so little .Particularly touching was the thought that had gone into adding some special items (yummy biscuits, strawberry jam, ricies, nice shower gel and soaps and even some Nutella !), as well as the essentials (Watties, Favourites, toothpaste and more), and the way the gifts were packaged looked great. These are all items that the Trust does not have the resources to provide and neither would the men have the means to obtain.

We already receive such wonderful support from your parish and St Vincent St Paul in so many ways, both for the men's shelter and for our work helping homeless women and whanau, so it was really humbling to also receive these gifts. To know that there are people such as yourselves in the community who truly care makes our commitment as volunteers worthwhile and truly encourages us.

It is sad to reflect however that the need for the Homeless Shelter still exists in New Plymouth even after the 44 years our Trust has operated despite all of the wealth in our society. Of course, money alone does not solve everybody's problems and what our men need is compassion and hope as well as material support. We make sure our guests are aware that we only exist as a Trust, that they are only able to benefit from the resources we can provide, though the individual generosity and compassion of people such as yourselves. The Catholic Parish is in our view a stand out in New Plymouth ( a beacon of hope) for all that you do in outreach and caring for the community!

This message itself cannot adequately convey our thanks but on behalf of our Trustees ,Volunteers and of course our guests ,we thank you so much for thinking of us this Christmas and may you all be ,as we feel we have been, truly blessed.

Yours very sincerely, Peter Coles, Chairperson, New Plymouth Emergency Shelter Trust

We pray for our deceased family and friends: Heydon Bartlett, Gary Reeves, Molly Hammersley, Rodrick Forsyth, Nancy Dobson, Bill Dobson, Anna Pung Tran, Anna Hoa Tran, Teresa Phuc Po, Zeta and Leo Carter, Andrea Dravitzki, Tommy Barrett, Peter Martin, Jim Hurley and deceased members of the Quin & Crowley Families
