TIME TRIATHLON ALPE D’HUEZ 2019

Dear Triathletes,

Welcome to the top of Alpe d’Huez! You have completed all of your training for this challenging yet stunning event, so now its time to relax and enjoy the Triathlon Festival week, and make the most of the services on offer to help you with your final preparations, ensuring you have the best race experience here in the French Alps.

2019 has had record entries, with up to 3500 athletes competing throughout the week in the 4 different programmed events. For the first time since the race began, the M and L distance events have sold out, several months before the deadline. We are encouraged and overjoyed at this success, and the TIME Triathlon Alpe d’Huez Organisation are commited to making sure all athletes feel part of our community and are provided with the best support we can offer to make the most of your triathlon experience. We are delighted to be part of the Spirit Tri Series, which has set up the new International Long Distance Triathlon Circuit, as it emcompasses our own philosophy in terms of

providing an athlete centred race experience. The Alpe d’Huez resort, TIME and EDF have supported us to ensure that the services provided cover all of the finer details needed for the athletes to have the best experience of the «21 mythical bends», and thanks to all our partners, we are continually improving this experience year on year. Without the support of the 100s of volunteers, this would not be possible, so a huge thank you to all of those involved in the preparation, on the day marshalling, and providing athlete care and support along their journey.

Also, thank you to all of the clubs, who are the first guardians of our values and so active in the INVERSE Team Contest (a special mention and congratulations to Issy Triathlon). Definitely, being part of the legend of the TIME Triathlon Alpe d’Huez is first and foremost a matter of attitude.

Cyrille et Laurence Neveu

6.5/15/2.5

450 participants will be taking on the greatest duathlon Sprint Duathlon in France! Starting at Bourg

d’Oisans athletes will first take on a 6.5km run around the beautiful town at the base of the mountain. A

great chance to warm up the legs before taking on the 21 bends of Alpe d’Huez, which will be the key

MAIN BRIEFING:WEDNESDAY 24TH JULY AT 18:00 AT THE EXPO VILLAGE

Race tip:

There are two types of Triathlon L finishers. Those who break down on the climb to Alpe d’Huez and make it to the finish as best they can after a hellish run. And those who manage their pace with caution all the ride long to reach the bottom of the 21 bends with enough strength to make a solid climb and give themselves the chance to do well over the final 20km. The choice is yours!

New for 2019:

Ladies will have their own wave starting 15 minutes before the men. This will ensure you have a much safer and enjoyable swim.

Swim and transitions: a few recommandations

Our swimming partner ZONE3 provides you some simple advices and tips to make the most of this great moment. The Lac du Verney awaits you!

Arrival to the Lac du Verney :For the participants, the simplest route is the one marked by the organisation to reach the shores of the lake directly by bike from Alpe d’Huez (via Villard Reculas). Cover up and enjoy the scenery. If you go down by car, you will have to go through the valley. Plan enough time. The organization will set up a drop-off zone this year to facilitate access to the park.

Check your equipment :Check your equipment and especially your bike. A mechanics assistance will be present for small last minute adjustments in the park. Leave your bike on a small gear, as you will have to climb a fairly steep ramp from the first few meters. Finally, be sure to identify your location! The lanes are well numbered, but this bike park is huge!

Lake temperature :Although in recent years, the temperature of the Lake has been quite favourable to triathletes, it can be relatively cold on race day. Neoprene hats are recommended under your swim hats, and if you know you get cold quickly a neoprene layer under your wetsuit can help as well.

The start of the race :There will be a briefing before the race commences, please listen carefully, as any last minute changes will be announced at this point. Leave plenty of time to get into the water, as even though the entry has been widened, with 1300 athletes, it takes time to get everyone in the water for the deep water start. It is a mass start! So if you get anxious, or are a weaker swimmer, give yourself space, start further back and to the side of the mass of swimmers.

Transition 1 : Zone 3 have provided all athletes with a transition bag, please ensure you put all of your kit (wetsuit, goggles, hat etc) in the bag, as this will be taken up to Alpe D’Huez for you to collect after the race at the Expo Village. Make sure that your race number is clearly marked on your bag.

MAIN BRIEFING: FRIDAY AT 10:30AM AT THE VILLAGE EXPO

Race tip:

Remember that first 4 turns are the steepest on the climb, so dont go out too hard! Once you reach La Garde the switchbacks are more gradual, and you can really get into a rhythm and attack the turns.

New for 2019:

For the duration of the event, the road will be closed to oncoming traffic between Vaujany and Allemont due to the sheer number of athletes. It is, however, imperitive that athletes comply with the highway code. There will be race referees out on the course ensuring your safety and they will be ready to issue penalties for any riders deemed to be causing danger to themselves or others.

Triathlon M

Lac du Verney – Alpe d’Huez

July 26th 2019

1,2-28-6,7

This triathlon is the meeting point for the entire community, and is regarded as the highlight of the week. 1300 athletes (a new record for 2019), of all abilities, from complete Novice to Elite, will be taking on this challenge. Athletes will swim 1.2km in Lake Verney, (and there will be a separate wave again for the female athletes). Then athletes will have a fast and flat 10km timetrial to the bottom of the mountain, before they take on the challenge of the 21 bends of Alpe d’Huez. The atmosphere on this climb is amazing, as all the supporters line the road, cheering and motivating the athletes all the way to the top. On arriving at T2, athletes will take on 1 lap of the 6.7km undulating loop, finally finishing outside the Village Expo where friends and supporters will be cheering them down the finish shoot.
