Welcome Aboard Packet

On behalf of the Information & Referral Program we would like to welcome you to Marine Corps Air

Station Yuma. We believe that you will find your assignment here to be a rewarding and enjoyable

experience. The MCAS Yuma Information & Referral Office is here to assist you in transitioning to the

local area by providing an Electronic Welcome Aboard Packet with information pertaining to the base

and the city of Yuma.

The Information & Referral Office would like to recommend that you visit your current station’s I&R

office and sign up for their Plan Your Move Seminar. This seminar is set up to relieve the stresses that

come with relocating by helping you to prepare for your impending move. Your current I&R office

should be able to provide you with information regarding MCAS Yuma as well. When you arrive at

MCAS Yuma, it is required for all new incoming service members and encouraged for spouses to attend

one of the Welcome Aboard Briefs, which are held 3rd Wednesday of the month from 0800-1030 at the

Sonoran Pueblo Gonzalez Room.

Information about Marine Corps Air Station Yuma

Established in 1959, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma is one of the Corps’ premier aviation training bases.

With access to 2.8 million acres of bombing and aviation training ranges and ideal flying weather, MCAS

Yuma supports 80 percent of the Corps’ air-to-ground aviation training. Each year, the air station hosts

approximately 70 aviation units, bringing an average of 600 aircraft and 14,000 personnel for ongoing

training exercises that take place.

Approximately 5900 Marines and sailors are aboard MCAS Yuma on any given day. There are also

several hundred permanent civilian employees and contractors employed at MCAS. With approximately

200,000 airfield operations annually, it is the most active air station in the Marine Corps and the sixth

most active in the Navy Department. MCAS Yuma is currently home to a number of tenant commands

including Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron-1 (MAWTS-1), Marine Aircraft Group-13

(MAG-13), Marine Wing Support Squadron-371 (MWSS-371), Marine Fighter Training Squadron-401

(VMFT-401), Marine Air Control Squadron-1 (MACS-1), Combat Logistics Company-16 (CLC-16), and

Marine Attack Squadrons 122, 211, 214, 311 and VMX 1, and VMU-1.

Checking Into MCAS Yuma

When checking into MCAS Yuma, personnel should arrive between 0800 and 1530, Monday-Friday and

proceed to Station Headquarters, Building 980 or phone (928) 269-2252 for further direction.

Personnel assigned to 3rd Marine Aircraft Group Units need to report between 0800 and 1530, Monday-

Friday and check-in at Marine Aircraft Group-13 (MAG-13) Headquarters, Building 505 or phone (928)

269-3262 for further direction.

Marines checking into Marine Aviations Weapons and Tactics Saquadron-1 (MAWTS-1) need to report to

Building 406 or call (928) 269-2058, between 0800 and 1530, Monday-Friday.

Those checking into Marine Fighter Training Squadron-401 (VMFT-401) need to report to Building 146 or

call (928) 269-3628, between 0800 and 1530, Monday-Friday.

Navy personnel checking in must first report to Building 980, then proceed to the Navy PSD located in

Building 1175 (Branch Medical Clinic).

All personnel checking on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, or after 1530 on weekdays, should report to the

MCAS Officer of the Day located in Building 980 or phone (928) 269-2252 for further direction.

Information about Yuma

Yuma is in the Sonoran Desert in Southwestern, Arizona. It is the third fastest growing city in the U.S and the third largest Metro area in Arizona. The year round population of Yuma is approximately 95,000. However, this number doubles to 190,000 during the winter months with the increase of winter visitors. Yuma is located near the confluence of the Gila and Colorado Rivers in the southwest corner of the state, on the borders of California and Mexico. The Colorado River, which defines the border between Arizona and California, runs along the city's northern edge. Yuma is nearly equidistant between Phoenix (178 miles) and San Diego (180 miles); also within a radius of just over 300 miles are Tucson, Las Vegas, Palm Springs and Los Angeles.

Fun Facts about Yuma Yuma is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the sunniest place on earth with 339 days of sunshine and less than 4 inches of rainfall annually. Yuma (and all of Arizona) does not observe daylight savings time, except on the Navajo Reservation. Yuma has 12 Golf Courses and 600 acres of parks and athletic fields. MCAS Yuma and Yuma International Airport share a runway that is the third longest in the United States. Most of the lettuce eaten in the United States from December through March is grown in Yuma, which has earned the city the title of “lettuce capital” of the United States.

MCAS Yuma Housing Information – Bldg 1080

Description: The mission of the Housing Office is to provide clean, comfortable, affordable and safe housing for

eligible personnel and their families assigned to MCAS Yuma. Housing is managed by a private partner, Lincoln

Military Housing. A full time government staff is also available to serve members on issues pertaining strictly to the

military as well as providing an off station referral program. There are 821 on station houses, separated by rank

and bedroom entitlement, and 128 two bedroom off station apartments for E1-E5.

To apply for family housing, you may contact the station’s housing office in building 1080 or via email at

Yuma.housing@usmc.mil. Applications for housing can be submitted prior to your departure. You can fax a copy

of your application, web orders, and dependent application form to the housing office.

Child Development Center – Bldg 1085

Description: The MCAS Yuma Child Development Center and Annex provide full day and hourly childcare for

children 6 weeks to 5 years. Fees for services are based on total family income and determined on a sliding fee

scale. Reservations for hourly care is on a first come first serve basis when space is available. Reservations can be

made up to one week in advance. The CDC offers the following programs for patrons of the MCAS Yuma

Community:

Full Day Program – Offers care for children ages 6 weeks through Kindergarten and is designed to

assist parents needing 6 or more hours of daily childcare.

Hourly Care – Childcare is available from Monday-Friday, 0600-1800. Reservations may be made

up to one week in advance.

Part Day Preschool at the Child Development Center – Available for children 3-5 years old from

September to May. Children can attend Monday-Thursday, 0900-1200.

Description: The Single Marine Program exists to improve the Quality of Life for Single Marines and Sailors aboard

MCAS Yuma. We focus on the young, single, enlisted Marine or Sailor, although we also welcome geographical

Description: Military families face unique challenges from issues such as deployment related stress, reintegration

We provide short-term, non-medical counseling services to service members and their families at no cost. We also
