FEAST OF FAITH The Greeting
At several points during the liturgy, the presider greets us with the words, “The Lord be with you.” These simple words are not like the greetings that we exchange all day long—our “good mornings,” our “hellos” and “how are yous.” This liturgical greeting has roots deep in the Old Testament. In the book of Ruth, the words “the Lord be with you” are spoken by Boaz to the harvesters who are laboring in his fields (2:4); in the book of Judges, an angel speaks similar words to Gideon (6:12), where they are words of promise: for soon Gideon will lead his op-pressed people to victory and freedom. For us, the words become a greeting of peace, a prayer that the Lord will indeed be with us, and a reminder of his promise to be with us always, to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20). Our response—“And also with you,” soon to be “And with your spirit”—returns to the presider this prayer for the Lord’s presence. As we know from the scriptures, a pray-er for the Lord’s presence is no small thing, for when God comes in our midst, God brings healing, grace, and chal-lenge. FIESTA DE LA FE Del cumplimiento a la espiritualidad La Eucaristía dominical ha de ser más que un mero cumplimiento de uno de los mandamientos de la santa madre Iglesia. La participación plena, consciente y activa en la celebración litúrgica supone ser un punto no nego-ciable en la vida de los cristianos. No es del mero cumpli-miento del precepto donde obtenemos lo necesario para continuar nuestra vida (aunque puede darse), es más bien, de asumir en nuestra vida lo que implica celebrar la Eucaristía. Es, creo yo, hacernos eco de la voz de los mártires del Norte de África que, ante la posibilidad del martirio y la experiencia de la tortura a causa de su fe, fueron capaces de afirmar: “No podemos ser cristianos sin la Eucaristía”. Resulta obvio que la celebración es par-te de esta cláusula, pero más allá está el atar la vida a ese misterio que se celebra; el transformar nuestra vida por la palabra proclamada, vivir con la frescura de tratar-nos como hermanos y hermanas, hacernos pan para que todos coman; trabajar por la justicia como una posibili-dad que puede comenzar ahora mismo y que como resul-tado tendrá la misericordia y la compasión hacia los de-más. Friday, January 22, 2021 will mark 48 years since the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade permitting abortions throughout the United States. The USCCB has designated January 22 as a National Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of the Unborn. This year, we will be hosting Eucharistic Adoration at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart from 7:30 a.m.– 4:30 p.m. All are invited to join us in prayer! SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OUR DEEPEST DESIRES
In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus’ first spoken words in the Gospel of John: “What are you looking for?” This penetrating question reverberates throughout John’s Gospel. The disciples who form Jesus’ first community, and many others who meet Jesus during his life, are drawn to him, seeking something they can’t quite name. As Jesus called and formed his community of disciples, he probed their hearts and allowed them to probe his heart. They shared their deepest needs, hopes, and commit-ments.
Jesus’ words might be directed to us, here and now. Sometimes we struggle to name what we really want. In our faith journey, in prayer and in lived experi-ence, we learn to share our dreams and also to open our hearts to know God’s dreams. In time, with lots of prac-tice, with many successes and failures, we learn to trust God to shape and to fulfill our deepest desires. YOUR SERVANT IS LISTENING
We hear of young Samuel today, dedicated to a life of service to God, under the guidance of Eli, a Temple priest. Twice, Samuel hears the call of God and says “Here I am” to Eli. At last Eli recognizes that it is God who is calling Samuel. When Samuel hears God a third time, Samuel does not say “Here I am,” but “Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.” We can see a subtle shift as Samuel moves away from announcing his intention to serve and more clearly opens himself to God’s voice. Samuel allows God to take the initiative, and attends first to God’s intentions rather than his own.
Samuel’s story helps us to remember that accept-ing God’s call is not only about a new chapter in our per-sonal story. Our acceptance is, more profoundly, a new moment in God’s story. Even in our smallest “yes,” God celebrates our partnership in God’s great work. Through our openness and acceptance, God has new opportunities to bring all of us into loving unity with God. SEGUNDO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO NUESTROS MÁS PROFUNDOS DESEOS En el Evangelio de Juan que se leyó hoy, escu-chamos las primeras palabras de Jesús. “¿Qué están bus-cando?” Esta pregunta penetrante resuena a lo largo del Evangelio de Juan. Los discípulos que formaron la prime-ra comunidad de Jesús, y muchos otros que conocieron a Jesús durante su vida, se sienten atraídos por él, buscan-do algo que no pueden nombrar. Cuando Jesús llamó y formó a su primera comunidad, él examinó sus corazo-nes y les permitió que examinaran el de él. Compartieron sus necesidades, esperanzas y compromisos más profun-dos.
Las palabras de Jesús podrían estar dirigidas ha-cia nosotros, aquí y ahora. A veces nos esforzamos por nombrar lo que realmente queremos. En nuestro viaje de fe, en la oración y en la experiencia vivida, aprendemos a compartir nuestros sueños y también a abrir nuestros corazones para conocer los sueños de Dios. Con el tiem-po, con mucha práctica, con varios éxitos y fracasos, aprendemos a confiar en Dios para dar forma y cumplir nuestros deseos más profundos. TU SIERVO ESCUCHA Hoy escuchamos a un joven Samuel, dedicado a una vida de servicio a Dios, bajo la guía de Elías, un sa-cerdote del Templo. Dos veces Samuel escucha el llama-do de Dios y responde a Elías “Aquí estoy”. Por fin Elías reconoce que es Dios quien está llamando a Samuel. Cuando Samuel escucha el llamado por tercera vez, Sa-muel no responde “Aquí estoy”, sino “Habla Señor, que tu siervo escucha”. Podemos ver un sutil cambio cuando Samuel se aleja de anunciar su intención y se abre más claramente a la voz de Dios. Samuel permite que Dios tome la iniciativa, y atiende primero a las intenciones de Dios en lugar de las suyas propias. La historia de Samuel nos ayuda a recordar que aceptar la llamada de Dios no es sólo acerca de un nuevo capitulo en nuestra historia personal. Nuestra aceptación es más profunda, un momento nuevo en la historia de Dios. Incluso en nuestro más pequeño “sí”, Dios celebra nuestra participación en su gran obra. A través de nues-tra apertura y aceptación, Dios tiene nuevas oportunida-des para llevarnos a todos a una amorosa unidad con Dios.

SANCTUARY CANDLE
Parishioners of St. John of the Cross have the opportuni-ty of purchasing a sanctuary candle in memory of their loved one. The cost is $10.00, same as the cost of offer-ing a mass for a loved one. The church continues to pray The Chaplet of the Divine Mercy. Monday– Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Chaplet will be prayed in English or Spanish. You are welcomed to come and pray with us or you may pray the chaplet wherever you may be at 3:00 p.m.
