HAPPENINGS AROUND THE CENTER

Are you ready for something new and different in

your life? Do you want to get to know some new

people? Do want to remain active and healthy?

The Wii bowling team would love to get to know

you and help you to learn Wii Bowling. Some of

the team members never bowled before joining the team. Now you can’t keep them

away. No heavy bowling ball to hold and throw, only some simple controls, and the

fun begins. Team practice 12:30 pm on Fridays in the main hall. Join us for some fun!

Tournament High Scores 200+

Love to golf, but the bag is getting too heavy or the course too

rainy, hilly, and windy? Don’t despair; don’t give up your golf game.

Come to the center and learn the Wii golf system and enjoy your game. You

will be surprised how realistic it can be, but in the comfort of the warm dry

center. Come see DJ for a lesson, or call to set up a time for one. Open for

golf practice Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 10am to 3pm.

Sad news - the team has lost Jerry Hall. Jerry will be remembered for all the caring and helpfulness he gave everyone.

He accomplished (9) 300 games (one game was in tournament, the rest were during practice at the center). Rest in peace

Jerry. You will be greatly missed.

Kinship/Caregiver Program Stillaguamish Family Caregiver Program welcomes our new Kinship Program!

Amy Dennis, Kinship Caregiver Program Coordinator (Kinship = grandparents raising grandchil-

dren) and Karen Anderson, Caregiver Support Program Manager South Snohomish County have

joined Debbie Cook in our new Kinship/Caregiver office located in the Annex building. Please stop

by and say hi!

Amy Dennis comes to the Stilly Center with 15+ years of professional

experience in Snohomish County, working in the non-profit, human ser-

vices field. Also now a part of The Stilly is the county funded and county-

wide Kinship Caregiver Program, which Amy has worked to continually

develop and implement over the past six years. This program offers criti-

cal supports to caregivers who have taken in relative children, primarily

grandparents raising their grandchildren. Based at the Stilly Senior Cen-

ter, Amy is eager to provide additional focused programming and sup-

ports to kin-families embedded in our local community! In her personal

life, Amy is a Snohomish County native currently living in Mountlake

Terrace with her two dogs and son who is getting married at the end of

August! She volunteers at her church, enjoys cooking, taking walks and

traveling over the mountains to Chelan a few times a year.

Karen Anderson Caregiver Program Manager of South Snohomish County

Karen Anderson is a veteran program and project manager in both cor-

porate and non-profit organizations. Karen has built many projects from

the ground up and they have gone on to flourish in supporting the com-

munity and the business areas each company serves. She has a strong

customer service and relationship sales background. Karen has volun-

teered with Lakes Area Youth Assistance and is currently a member of

the Mill Creek Women’s Club which supports women re-entering the

workforce and at risk youth. Karen and her husband are currently care-

givers to two local parents one in an Adult Family Home and the other is

now living in an Assisted Living Facility. Karen also was a caregiver to

her Mom the final three weeks of her life back at her Michigan

home. These hands-on experiences in caregiving creates the space for

Karen to be able to relate to the caregivers attending the Caregiver Sup-

port Groups. Karen enjoys walking, biking, hiking, photography, travel-

ing, and spending time with her husband and their two four year old

Yorkies.

Family Caregiver Support Program

Family caregivers are under a tremendous amount of stress as they care for their loved ones.

The Family Caregiver Support Program utilizes TCARE (Tailored Caregiver Assessment and

Referral).

TCARE measures stress, depression and relationship burdens involved with caregiving.

TCARE creates a better way for The Family Caregiver Specialist to target services based on

the caregiver’s specific need.

Ann Stansberry was born in the The Netherlands on March 20. Her name at that time was Annigje Bos. She lived in the Netherlands all through school, and worked there as a Secretary for and Attor-ney. She worked in Switzerland for one year as an Au pair, and did schooling there as well. When she was back in The Netherlands, she met her husband , who was in the military. He worked in a one-man station in the town where she lived. They were married there and had one son born in Holland before they moved to the US to live in Pittsburgh, PA. She was 25 when she immigrated, in 1968.

When they lived in Pittsburgh she got her first job in the US---as an Avon Lady. This job helped her with her English. They had a daughter while living in Pittsburgh. They also lived for a time in Harrisburg, PA, before getting an assignment back in the Netherlands. Another son was born there. Her husband was a Food In-spector, who inspected Dutch companies that delivered food and milk to the troops. Ann did not work when they moved back to the Netherlands. They returned to the states and lived in Lynnwood, WA. The kids settled there and had most of their school-ing there. Ann worked at Fred Meyers in the Jewelry department. She and her husband were a host family for foreign students for 16 years. Mostly kids from Edmonds Com-munity College. They had kids from many countries, including China, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. They did this while living in Lynnwood, Mill Creek, and Marysville. They moved to Arlington, which was out of the area for host families, and have lived here for 8 years. One of their Japanese students is coming for a visit this week, staying for 5 days. She wants her children to meet her US mom and dad. Ann has volunteered in the Thrift Store at the center for 2 years. Her husband volunteers for the Stilly Food Bank and has for over 5 years. They have 3 grandchildren, ages 16,17, and 18. Ann is excited that her sister is coming from the Netherlands for two months to visit. She is going to take her to work with her at the Stilly Thrift store---they will be there Mondays and Tuesdays so you can get a chance to meet her too!! Ann loves gardening, and enjoys all her flowers. She also dug an area and installed a little pond in the yard. She also enjoys keeping in touch with friends and family on Facebook.

Volunteerism Do you want to add more meaning to your life, but are unsure of how to do so? Would you like to forget about your troubles, if only temporarily, while you help someone else? If you answer “yes” to these questions, becoming a volunteer may benefit you and your life. Volunteering helps bolster self-esteem. When you help someone else, you feel better about yourself. Vol-unteering is a great way to meet like-minded, helpful people. Making new friends can become more difficult as you grow older. When you participate in activities you enjoy, you meet people with whom you have some-thing in common. Regardless of your age or physical limitation, you can become a volunteer. Becoming in-volved is one of the most rewarding ways to enrich your life. Get involved and become a volunteer at the

Stillaguamish Senior Center!!!!! Volunteering is one way of giving back to your Senior Center. Volunteers are the heart of the Center and we can always use more heart, so if you are interested in volunteering , contact the Center (360) 653-4551

Ask for D. J. and become a member of the volunteer team.

Thank you to all current volunteers!

You make it a great center for the community!

Joy through movement- Justin Stone, Originator

Climb the Joyous Mountain: Living the Meditative

T’ai Chi Chih is a gentle discipline based on ancient principles capable of bringing peace and serenity to those practicing regularly. T’ai Chi Chih consists of 19 movements and 1 posture which circulate and bal-ance Chi. These gentle movements form a moving mediation and an exercise of great efficiency—exercising the inner organs and promoting healing—but eventually it goes beyond these and permeates the life-style of the practitioner. We do not all see the same world, which is a reflection of ourselves. With the accumulation of Chi (Vital Force) through T’ai Chi Chih practice, permanent changes in the metabolism and the thinking process take place and renewed energy conditions the whole way of life...Joy becomes our natural heritage. Eight week course of instruction in movement, then join our regular class at 9:30 am Starting Sept. 4th
