Make the Most of It

Well, well, what a wonderful figure. On the morning of last Tuesday 21st, the resort

cracked the two metre mark with a snow depth Towers Main Street of 201cm’s. The measurements in other open snowmaking areas at the same time were: Wombats Ramble: 176cm’s. Drovers: 181cm’s. Mousetrap: 184cm’s. Boardwalk: 142cm’s. Scott’s: 165cm’s. Ruined Castle: 185cm’s - giving an average for all open areas of 179cm’s.The beautiful snow fall last weekend did a ripper job and secured some great times for many visitors who are yet to make it to Falls Creek. Some come for

the great skiing, some for the brilliant boarding - and some just come along for the good times - and there are plenty of those. Let’s see what we have on offer this weekSnow PlayLet’s face it. There is not a man or woman alive who, on their first trip to the snow, did not make a snowman. They can have stones for eyes, carrots for noses, jelly snakes for lips and sticks for arms. They can be small or big, be individuals or families and can be hours of fun. And it’s as simple as walking out the door, finding a patch of snow (not in the middle of a ski run, or under the eaves where more snow may fall) and start building. This activity accrues ‘quality time’ points for the adults. The more time you spend with the kids, the more points you get! •

Nordic Snowshoeing ToursThe opportunity to experience Falls Creek from a different perspective is available when you join the team on a guided Nordic Snowshoe tour. Fun and fitness come together on this two hour walk through the snow-gums around our picturesque village and its outer limits.

Nordic Snowshoeing involves strapping on a pair of special ‘Yowie’ snowshoes and using Nordic walking poles to help you along while walking groomed and ungroomed tracks as well as some fresh deep snow. The snowshoes are shaped at the toe and heal to allow natural foot rolling movement. Sharp metal claws underneath the snowshoe grip the ice and maintain a firm footing in the snow.Nordic Snowshoeing is an exciting and energetic way of experiencing some pure untouched snow on some of our beautiful walking trails - usually covered in wildflowers during the summer. Nordic snowshoeing tours can be tailored to suit you and your party so that everyone is able to participate in this new and popular sport here in Australia. Tours are available every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 1:30 - 3:30pm.Book at the Falls Creek Activities Desk, or phone 1800 204 424. •Scenic Heli-flightsIf heading off to Mount Hotham for the day does not sit with your plans, what about a fabulous scenic flight over the resort, the ski fields and the Bogong High Plains? Each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the helicopter is available to take you and your party (maximum of

five people) on a wonderful flit over the area, giving you a better idea of just how vast the snow covered high plains are. There are no better ways of discovering the beauty and learning more about the area than flying over it - and that golden opportunity exists now. •Bungy TrampolineAn activity for the younger team, the bungy trampoline is located in the Village Bowl. During the week the Bungy Trampoline will operate between 12noon and 2pm and then again from 4pm until 6pm. where there is a constant interchange of knowledge, ideas and experience.Patrol is made up of a variety of dedicated men and women from both professional and non-professional backgrounds. While Patrol attracts more professionals these days, there is always a good smattering of skilled trades-people - plumbers and carpenters in particular.Members of Patrol start at 0500 to collect weather readings from three weather stations around the hill. This data is recorded, formatted and then fed out through our media network. Finish times for patrollers can be as late as 21:30 after our fun night skiing program. Most patrollers work a four day week, which seems to be the optimum arrangement, giving the team time to ski, relax with the family, the occasional party and for the more mature, time to sleep. To date this season, our Patrol has responded to in excess of 1100 calls. From these 1100+ calls, a little over 600 were injuries that required transport to the Falls Creek Medical Centre for further treatment. Of these patients, seven required the services of the helicopter air ambulance for further treatment. And while on this subject, now is the time to check that your ambulance subscription is up to date (Ph: 1800 648 484 to renew or sign up). This injury rate this season is slightly lower than the average over the last 10 years at 1.4 patients to clinic per 1000 visitor days. The most common injury among skiers is knees. Among snowboarders, it is wrist and head injuries. This year, Patrol has attended four patients that have suffered femur fractures. Wearing a helmet is smart.

SKI PATROL UPDATEFalls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK

The Season So Far

Snowsports are an invigorating past-time with adrenalin, plenty of exercise, lots of fresh air and

great scenery. No wonder it is loved by thousands. But, it is one of very few past-times that are performed on the side of a hill, in changing weather, with changing visibility, among participants of all ages and abilities. It is evident in some folk that their enthusiasm far exceeds their abilities. That is why every resort in the world has Ski Patrol. They are on the slopes to keep us safe and assist us when injured. The following is a snapshot of Falls Creek Ski Patrol as of the end of August 2012.Ski Patrol is made up of 30 paid patrollers, plus 10 volunteers. We also have two exchange patrollers, one from Squaw Valley CA, and the other from Keystone CO. These patrollers are part of the on-going exchange program, first initiated in the 80’s,

During this season, Patrol has focused on several areas with a view to improving everyone’s experience. Firstly, the protection of skiers and boarders in beginner areas. A second priority is the safety in the management of terrain parks and a third aspect is the promotion of the Alpine Responsibility Code - especially among school groups.Internally, Patrol Management has focused on sustainable manual handling practices and the development of patient lifting aids. A second point is the personal development of individual patrollers towards achieving National benchmarks within ASPA. A third point of focus is the general improvement in medical skills thanks to the valuable input from on-mountain Paramedics and Doctors. There have been a couple of very concerning issues also this season. The first is the number of skiers and boarders who do not obey the Slow signs on Slow Zones. These zones are created for a reason - and should not be ignored.A second point to be aware of; and one that could have severe implications - is the construction of mini terrain parks (jumps etc) built within the village. This could be extremely dangerous and site-holders need to be aware of potential litigious exposure. I.e. If a kid builds a jump on your site, jumps off it and lands awkwardly or on a passer-by - you could be up for some cost.Once again, good knowledge of the Alpine Responsibility Code is a vital part of all snowsports enthusiasts’ kit.The Alpine Responsibility Code is available on the ASPA website www.skipatrol.org.au or the Snowsafe website

at www.snowsafe.org.au.Another improvement in the overall operation of Ski Patrol is that more snowmobiles are used these days. Patrol has six snowmobiles and these can carry more personnel, tow a sled and get to a patient quicker. Another major benefit is the recently acquired Ski Patrol Nissan patient transports vehicle. Known among the fraternity as ‘SJ’, the Patrol Nissan has proved a vital link in the transfer of patients from the Falls Express area down the main road to the medical centre.Funding of Ski Patrol is always an issue, but in this resort we are very lucky to have some generous businesses and supporters. Among these major contributors we have the lovely Marg Hansen at The Man Hotel, the crew at Wagga Ski Club, Simon Warrender & Family and one very generous local resident and ski patroller Simon Allen. These folk have contributed significantly towards ‘SJ’ the Patrol Nissan, the Alex Warrender Memorial Ski Patrol Base, the purchase of Emergency Resuscitation packs and a variety of other rescue equipment. These contributions, together with those from the Falls Creek community are sincerely appreciated. Now, there are several major activities taking place in patrol circles in the near

From the rigours of the 42km main race, to the 21km Birkebeiner or the 7km Joey Hoppet, the event offers something for everyone. I love the family appeal of the ‘Joey.’ For the record, my wife Deb and I, together with our children Bree and Aaron, will be competing again this year. Falls Creek’s Cross Country Showcase

Each year Falls Creek proudly hosts the largest snow sports event in the southern hemisphere. The Kangaroo

Hoppet is a prestigious event on the international cross country calendar and one of only 16 races (together with 12 European countries, the United States, Canada and Japan) that forms the Worldloppet circuit. This weekend marks the 22nd running of Kangaroo Hoppet in Falls Creek. The entry list in this year’s event reads like a ‘who’s who’ of cross country skiing. In addition to the best local talent, the 2012 field will boast a number of elite skiers from overseas including members of the Russian National Cross Country Ski Team (who have been training in the Falls Creek for several weeks). Indeed this

and relative ease of access. Falls Creek has Australia’s best cross country ski trails which are perfectly showcased over the weekend. A huge vote of thanks goes to the Hoppet Committee, the event sponsors and our wonderful Resort Management staff including the grooming team and event support crew.I would encourage all Resort guests to head down to the Nordic Bowl this Saturday morning to take part in the excitement of the Kangaroo Hoppet. It’s a part of the Falls Creek experience not to be missed. Enjoy the snow! •David Herman, CEO,Falls Creek Resort Management

Sit Ski Achievement

On the 17th of January this year, Grant Korgan skied to the South Pole using only his upper body

and arms. As part of ‘The Push - A South Pole Adventure’ Grant pushed himself 100 miles across Antarctica in a sit ski. A documentary called ‘The Push’ was made about the epic undertaking. The film’s director, Steven Siig, said, “Grant just pulled off one of the most amazing athletic achievements in modern history and a first for adaptive athletes. This is a historic day in the name of recovery, technology, adventure and the human potential.”Another exciting development in the world of Nordic sit-skiing will occur at this year’s Kangaroo Hoppet cross country ski race at Falls Creek. Norwegian Nordic sit-skier, Ole Herman Rønnevig is competing in Australia’s premier cross country ski event, which is part of the Worldloppet series. In 1990 Ole broke his neck in a car accident. In hospital doctors told him he would spend the rest of his life in an institution. Determined to not allow this to happen, Ole dedicated all his waking hours to rebuilding his strength and independence. Training up to 1200 hours a year in a top athlete training

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIAcentre in Oslo, Ole had to visit hospital less and less frequently and eventually became strong enough to begin skiing. To begin with, due to his lack of shoulder muscles, Ole had to develop a technique that would allow him to propel himself. With a twisting of the hands and straightening of the elbow Ole overcame this hurdle and began devoting all his energy and training towards developing his skiing technique. With the help of a guide - who informs Ole about the track ahead, which is difficult to see for someone sitting down - he finished his first 38km race in six and a half hours. To date, Ole’s best time over a similar distance is 2 hours and 58 minutes. In 2003 Ole competed in his first Worldloppet event, the Vasaloppet, a 90km cross country ski race in Sweden. His dream was to become a Worldloppet Master, someone who has competed in ten Worldloppet ski events, with at least one being on a different continent. Ole achieved this dream in 2011. He is now in Falls Creek to continue on his Worldloppet journey. Look out for him on the cross country trails this week and at the Kangaroo Hoppet on Saturday.

And guess what? I’m back in town! I arrived late last week but lay very low with all the snow that fell over

the weekend - what a wonderful storm! I’m so very excited about all that snow though because it’s going to make the Kangaroo Hoppet this Saturday the 25th of August just fantastic! That’s why I’ve come back up to visit! What a job the organisers are doing - the Kangaroo Hoppet is in its 22nd year and is the opening event of the 2012/13 Worldloppet Series of long distance cross country ski races - which are held all around the world. (I wonder if I could race in one overseas?) The Kangaroo Hoppet, here at Falls Creek takes participants out into my home, the Alpine National Park to complete the 7km Joey Hoppet, the 21km Australian Birkebeiner and the 42km Kangaroo Hoppet. I can’t believe how many people get involved in these three events - in 2011 there were 1051 participants from over 20 different countries. And they were all different ages and abilities too! That’s my kind of great day out in the National Park! And I so love coming up to visit the Kiewa Valley and seeing all my friends up here. I love catching up with all the rangers in the Parks Victoria office - who are helping to prepare the Hoppet course and make sure it’s challenging enough for everyone. And to see all my other

Leg two of our Great Alpine Challenge is the Kangaroo Hoppet, Australian Birkebeiner and Joey Hoppet, held each year on the fourth Saturday in August. Then, to complete this extremely long event, we have the Mitta to Mount Beauty Mountain Bike Ride, a 55km point to point ride which takes place on the fourth Sunday in October; this year being Sunday 28th October. For further details on the Mitta ride, visit www.tmb.org.au.Taking part in these three events is a challenge in itself. Completing them all gives a real feeling of satisfaction. •The Hoppet DozenWith its high profile position in regional tourism, the Hoppet promotes the local wine industry through their Hoppet Dozen project. The Hoppet Dozen is sourced from the wineries of the Alpine Valleys and King Valley wine regions and aims to introduce skiers and friends to local wines with the idea of encouraging visitors to try wines that they might not otherwise come across.

Hopefully they will like what they try and make the effort to drop in on the local cellar doors to explore their full range of wines.Available only from the Hoppet office during Hoppet Week, the 2012 Hoppet Dozen includes wines from the Annapurna and Ceccanti wineries in the Kiewa Valley, Boynton’s from Porepunkah in the Ovens Valley, Australian Alps Winery at Gapsted, Sam Miranda Wines from Oxley and, new for 2012, a chardonnay from Benjella another of our local Kiewa valley wineries. The Hoppet Dozen comes packaged in Sam Miranda’s striking six bottle presentation packs, allowing people to choose six reds, six whites, or the full mixed dozen. •

DistanceAlexander Legkov went two from two by winning the 15km distance championship event on Sunday. Legkov, along with his team mates Ilia Chernousov who was second and Alexey Tchernousov who was third, put on a brilliant demonstration on how to XC ski. Technically these three stood out and it is easy to see why they are ranked among world’s best. Of the Australians it was Alex Almoukov who took the title and finished a very respectable fourth overall, veteran Ben Derrick was second and Callum Watson third. Maria Graefnings from Sweden came out firing in the women’s 10km event winning by over two minutes in front of Russian Marina Chernousova and Australian Sprint Champion Esther Bottomley. It was a much closer race for the second and third Australian spots with Lescinska Grimmer, Anna Trnka and Lucy Glanville trading the lead throughout the race. In the end Lucy showed her stamina and came through in second place with Anna finishing third Australian and Lescinska fourth.

There was much anticipation and excitement surrounding the 2012 Australian Senior Championships

which were held at Falls Creek last weekend. Organised with the usual class by Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club, the Championships consisted of a sprint and distance event and attracted skiers from around the World.SprintThe men’s sprint was an all international affair with Russia taking first, second and third and the Czech Republic forth. The winner, Alexander Legkov is ranked fourth in the World for distance skiing and he showed on Saturday that he also can sprint winning comfortably in front of his two Russian team mates. The first Australian was Callum Watson from New South Wales in front of Mark van der Ploeg from Mount Beauty and Alex Almoukov from Berridale. On a side note Mark broke a personal FIS point barrier going under 100 FIS points for the first time.In the women’s sprint Mount Beauty’s Esther Bottomley showed she could match the best in the world by dominating a strong field and winning comfortably. Sweden’s Maria Graefnings was second and junior athlete Anna Trnka was third.

women’s event and become an Australian Champion. Sarah qualified just over 6 seconds in front of second place Sabrina Howell from New South Wales. Third was Sophie Lewis also from New South Wales. In the boys U16 event New South Welshman Matthew Bull won in front of Wangaratta’s Rowan Kaye who skied a solid race to finish second. Third was Victorian squad member Hugh Pollard. In the U20 classes the national titles for the sprint event went to Alasdair Tutt and Anna Trnka who are both spending the winter living and working at Falls Creek. Tutt finished first in the qualifying a head of Melbourne’s Alex Gibson who was second and the ACT’s Hamish Roberts who was third. It was always going to be tight in the U20 women’s sprint event with the top three girls all being very competitive. Multiple Australian sprint Champion Lucy Glanville from New South Wales went in favourite with Victorians Anna Trnka, Xanthea Dewez and Ash Spittle all in contention. Tricky waxing and skiing conditions saw a few upsets early on with Lucy’s skis ‘balling up’ and Xanthea taking a spill on the final corner. Xanthea was still able to hold onto third place in the time trail and stay in contention however Lucy’s day was over. Anna and Ash skied solid time trails to finish first and second. The U20’s were mixed in with the seniors for the finals and Anna and Xanthea came up against each other in the semi. Xanthea led out of the start and at the top of the final climb had a seven meter lead over Anna. Unable to give up Anna kept fighting and was able to catch back

up on the downhill and in a fast finish get in front by around a ski length at the finish. The end results was Anna first, Xanthea second and Ash third.DistanceIn the distance event the junior age groups were broken into U12, U14, U16, U18 and U20.The U12 and U14 age groups raced 2.5km. In the boys U12 it was Tommi Silvester who finished first in front of Ash Forrer. In the U12 girls event it was Meg Watkins first and Acacia Benne-Keeble second. Anthony Evans (fast name, fast results) won the boys U14 race just in front of Matthew Wright who was second and Jarrah Forrer who was third. In the girls U14 it was Claudia Richardson winning in front of Katarina Trnka. The U16 event saw Matthew Bull back up from the previous day’s win to take another Australian title in front of Hugh Pollard who was second and Rowan Kaye who was third. The female U16 championship went to Sabrina Howell with Olivia Jeffrey and Kate Hesse finishing second and third. The U18 race finished with Xanthea Dewez from Wangaratta taking first place in front of New South Wales skier Jillian Colebourn who was second and Katerina Paul from Healesville who was third. The boys U18 event was won by Damon Morton in front of Hamish Roberts who was second and Misa Trnka who was third.

The U20 girls saw Lucy Glanville recover from her disappointing result in the sprint to take another Australian Junior Title (I think she is close to 20 wins in Australian Junior Championship races which has to be close to some sort of record). Anna Trnka put up a good fight to finish second and Casey Wright was third. The U20 men’s event was won by Alasdair Tutt who finished just in front of his good friend Nick Montgomery with Jackson Bursill taking third. •

Marty came to Australia to work for the prestigious Hilton Hotel chain and progressed to running his own venue in Cliffton Beach, Queensland for many years. Marty sold his restaurant this year and was lured to Falls Creek by FCCC owners Graham and Christine Irish. This is Martin’s first year at Falls, however he has worked a season at Candlelight in Thredbo.Marty’s traditional background means that he invests a lot of time, care and preparation into his meals. In an age of instant everything it is gratifying to find a craftsman who has the knowledge and takes the time to make his stocks from scratch. Marty is supported by second year apprentice Corey, and Toby, a German backpacker. They make a tight knit, hard-working team. The restaurant is open from Monday to Saturday so at least they have Sundays off to get out and ski.The FCCC is a family owned and run business. After having a very busy week it was a little less hectic the night we dined and we were very lucky to have Christine, Graham and two of their sons, Alexander and Ben join us for dinner, with-out too many interruptions. Graham and Christine have been involved in many aspects of Falls Creek for around 20 years. They also have a small group of independent cinemas in several rural locations. The best thing for them about living and working in Falls Creek is having family around, being able to ski together (all passionate about the snow) the fresh air, beauty of the area, the mountains and the amazing view of the stars at night. The wine list has a good selection of all Australian wines with a few notable

They have their own road/driveway leading from the Bogong High Plains Road up to the main entrance. We began our evening higher up in the village and strolled down Falls Creek Road to enter from the Diana Trail down the restaurant access stairs, just a little short cut tip for you if you are heading there from the village. The most noticeable thing about dining at the Country Club is that the menu is a little different from many of the other restaurants at Falls Creek. There is a lot of rather fancy, modern, ‘Master Chef’ food to be found however the FCCC offers a more traditional selection of meals at very reasonable prices. The menu possibly reflects Chef Martin Seubert’s classical training having learned his craft in Austria and Switzerland.

exceptions. There are three Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand and if you ask for a glass of ‘bubbles’ to begin your night, you will be given a piccolo of Louis Perdrier, a lovely, yeasty, French tipple that we can’t call Champagne because it was not made in that area. There is also an interesting selection of European beers from Bavaria, Germany, Belgium and even the Czech Republic. You may be getting the impression that FCCC has a rather European flavour.Speaking of flavours, there were half a dozen entrees to choose from on the evening that we dined and a specials board that listed a few tasty offerings to compliment the standard menu. I have noticed that there is not a large amount of soups on offer around the

resort this season so it was a nice surprise to find both a Spicey Beef Goulash and a Seafood Chowder on the menu. I chose the Chowder and was served a delicate bowl with fresh plump morsels of seafood swimming in a scrumtious broth, infused with dill and pernod. There was a house made Duck Liver Pate, Ciabatta, Bruschetta and Salt and Pepper Calamari available as entrees also. I did try a piece of the Calamari from a fellow diners plate and it was exactly how I like it, tender and flavoured perfectly so as not to drown the taste of the Calamari which is quite subtle.FCCC is a family friendly restaurant and they offer a kids menu for $16.95 which includes ice-cream for dessert. There is a Char-Grill selection that offers fabulous steaks, Rib Eye and Fillet of Beef from Victoria and Porterhouse from South Australia. One of our party chose the Fillet of course. The steaks are served with vegetables, your choice of sauce and a very tasty gratin potato. I can’t believe I missed the Duck! It was on the menu the previous night so breaking with tradition I chose its near cousin, Baked Chicken Supreme. This dish was beautifully presented and I was particularly fond of the crispy flakes of sweet potato garnishing my chicken breast which was wrapped in filo and roasted with capsicum, prosciutto, bocconcini and a Mediterranean vegetable salad with Napoli sauce. In keeping with the refined, traditional theme I chose the Creme Caramel for

dessert and it was the perfect finish to my meal. The Viennese-style Apple and Almond Strudel was calling me but I was not sure I had the room in my very satisfied and full stomach. A fellow diner went with the less traditional Xuxu Bomb, a serve of vanilla ice-cream with Xuxu liqueur, mixed berries and almond biscotti. It is worth noting that if you are staying at FCCC, all of the meals can be ordered as room service and all you need to do is come and collect when ready. room while dining in your tracky dacks would have to be one of the best bonuses the FCCC has to offer! The night we dined at the Country Club was the eve of one of the best dumps of snow so far this season. By the time we were leaving the village around 11pm there was already around 8cm of snow covering the road and much more was to fall in the following 24 hours. As we wandered down the tree lined driveway, in the soft silence of falling snow it was hard to believe we were not actually in Europe. •

was played in Wodonga on Saturday. This wraps up a long season comprising 18 home and away games. For some teams, however, it has not completely wrapped up. Going into finals this weekend are the U14’s and U17’s football teams, as well as the B Grade netball team. B Grade finished 4th and will go into the elimination final, whereas both the boys teams finished 3rd and will go into semi-finals, effectively giving them ‘a second chance’. Needless to say, these three teams had convincing wins on the weekend. Both senior football teams also had good wins.In Albury on Monday night, the league vote count was held at the Commercial Club. Well it seems to be catching as, after a beautifully romantic dinner at Astra last Wednesday night, Ash Bridle our friendly barman from Winterhaven) turned to his lovely partner of seven years, Hannah MacFarlane (who shares the work on the floor at Winterhaven with Danni Forde) and proposed. And, you guessed it; the good news is “YES!” Congratulations to you both and best wishes for many happy and healthy years together. •

Volunteers and Technology

Like many organisations in this area and beyond, our Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre is

continually working to attract volunteers. An article this publication recently presented explained that the Neighbourhood Centre was a community organisation and service that you don’t really need (we think) - until we need it. And when it does come time to need it, it is comforting to know that the Centre is where we can get lots of help and receive considerable support. As a result of that article, the team at the Neighbourhood Centre are pleased to welcome three new volunteers into the ‘family.’ Barbara Thomas has just moved to town from Port Macquarie and has joined the volunteers; as has Karen Collins, who was previously in the mining industry for many years. Both ladies will be fulfilling

roles in the Centre’s administration. The third new volunteer is Jacqui Packer, who needs no introduction, having spent the bulk of her working life in the hospitality industry. Jacqui will assist in the Centre’s hospitality and catering department. Now there are three new volunteers who have a wealth of knowledge and experience and would all be a pleasure to talk with. But, volunteers are still needed. Give it some thought - you might even enjoy it.Adult Learners WeekThe Hon Sharon Bird MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Higher Education and Skills offers a welcome to ALW 2012! (We’re confusing you now with acronyms). See www.adultlearnersweek.org The Australian Government is proud to support ALW through national projects that enhance awareness of the role and importance of adult learning in the community. This year’s ALW theme is ‘Digital Literacy’ - an important and very topical focus. At its broadest, the term refers to the ability to use digital technology such as computers, phones, tablets, the internet, and more recently televisions and other entertainment equipment. In our rapidly changing society, digital literacy skills are essential, but there are large numbers of Australians - especially adults - who feel increasingly lost when it comes to technology. So what better way to encourage Australian

adults to delve into digital learning, than through Adult Learners’ Week? Educational organisations including TAFEs, universities and community education and training providers, have taken the opportunity to organise events, activities and celebrations of lifelong learning, skills development, digital literacy and much more.Locally, our centre is continuing this theme with a program to help you learn to use your portable electronic device. Let’s face it. My new Samsung Galaxy 3 or whatever is so bloody complicated it is hard work to make a simple phone call. This day is set for Monday 3rd September and begins with a morning tea at 11am. SKI CLUB NEWSFalls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK

Alpine Club Races

One of the most exciting activities of an Alpine Ski Club is its annual club ski

races. Club races provide a great opportunity for members of all skiing abilities to compete in a fun and friendly environment. Racing is a great motivator to help improve your technique and a great way to judge if all that practice is working! The Australian Alpine Club Falls Creek is one such club to hold annual ski races, this year on Father Fosters. Sharing the race course with Riverina Ski Club, AAC entered 32 competitors on a Giant Slalom course set up and run by Falls Creek Ski Lifts Race & Events team. The competition comprises two timed runs for each competitor, the second run in the reverse order to the first. Categories include adult male, adult female and children. There is also a snowboarding category.Skiing conditions last Saturday were particularly ‘friendly’ with competitors being greeted with good visibility and a dusting of fresh snow on a smooth easy to ski course. A

strong head wind meant going too fast wasn’t going to be a problem. Children loved the conditions, with the smiles on their faces telling the story as they completed each run.The day concluded with a ‘Retro Theme’ club dinner and trophy presentations back at the lodge. It was great to see the old one piece suits and fluro tops getting one more chance to be worn! The mirrored disco ball and 80’s music also got a work out late into the evening. The Australian Alpine Club Falls Creek is a family friendly lodge with currently a limited number of membership vacancies. If you would like to be a part of this type of club environment please contact the membership officer on [email protected] or visit the website www.aacfallscreek.comResults:Women1 Emma Pitt2 Melisa Cameron3 Viv WallMen1 Ross Barker2 John Cameron3 Harrison Cowie
