Colonial America (1-3) Find out how the colonists lived, worked, and played. Old-fashioned crafts, games, candle making, soap making, and gardening will be explored.

Learn the art of script writing and practice proper upper- and lower-case letters. Druidawn: Writing, Role-Playing and World Forklore (1-3 and 4-7) Motivating for reluctant (or enthusiastic!) writers, this year’s fantasy role-playing game takes players through worlds populated by magical creatures of folklore. Blending creative writing with cooperative gaming, players increase their character’s “power” with each word they write. New adventures every week!

Along with great stories you’ll enjoy fun activities while learning about characters, settings, fiction and nonfiction. Learn to re-tell a story. Practice partner reading techniques using “I Read, You Read” and a readers’ theatre will add to the fun. Let the love of reading begin!

Settlers of Catan (4-7)You’ll enjoy this German board game as you build settlements, roads and cities while embarking on a quest to settle the island of Catan. Sign Language (1-3 and 4-7)Here’s a chance to learn how to talk with your hands and communicate with a deaf or hard-of-hearing friend. You’ll learn the basic sign language alphabet, how to sign songs, and how to carry on a brief conversation.

NEW! Charlotte’s Web, the Animal Planet and You! (1-3)Children will read and discuss E. B. White’s children’s classic “Charlotte’s Web,” as well as view the recent film adaption of the book. A fun time will be had by all as they participate in group activities role playing various animals, to better understand an outsider’s individual perspective on the world. The final week class activity will be a puppet show presentation based on one of the episodes in the book.

NEW! Advanced Manufacturing I (4-7)Explore transportation technologies, including the basics of advanced manufacturing design and 12-volt DC energy and circuits. Students will also take a field trip to Stark State College’s Automotive Transportation Center and to a related advanced manufacturing or automotive company. (Permission forms will be sent home on the first day; transportation provided). This class is held over two time slots in the afternoon.

Owls, Birds, Snakes and Frogs (1-3) If you enjoy exploring all the fauna around us, this course is for you. Examine what owls eat by dissecting owl pellets and comparing owls from Western and Eastern regions. Embark on a journey of beauty of the birds around us and design your own bird house. Take a nature hike in search of black snakes that make the campus their home and then return to the classroom to design your own (wooden) snake friend. The week will end with a lesson on the life cycle of frogs.

Come share what you know about your pet and learn about what it takes to care for a pet, understand that animals have feelings too, and discover that companion animals and people share many of the same needs. Representatives from the Humane Society will bring a few pets for us to meet and families will have the opportunity to donate items to our local shelter.

NEW! Pen Pals - Explore the World with a Friend (1-3 and 4-7) What do you get when you combine paper, a pen, an envelope and a stamp? A new friend! Explore what it means to be a pen pal and meet a friend from another state or even a foreign country. We’ll welcome a foreign exchange student into our classroom to learn about their culture and experience here in our country as well as learn about the letter writing process. Information will be sent home for parents to review before addresses are shared.
