Register for one, two, three or all four weeks. Morning (3 class periods), afternoon (2 class periods), or all-day sessions (5 classes) are available.

COST

LUNCHES All-day students may bring a brown bag lunch or purchase lunch in our cafeteria for $4 daily. A weekly menu will be available at www.starkstate.edu/kidscollege. Make checks for lunch payable to Stark State College. Vending machines are available.

REFUNDS A full refund, minus a $7 processing fee, will be made for registrations canceled on or before the Thursday prior to start of selected week.

T-SHIRTS [ NEW DESIGN] Pre-order your official Kids’ College T-shirt for $5 by May 11. Students can pick it up on their first day. T-shirts are not required; limited availability if not pre-ordered.

Colonial America (1-3) Find out how the colonists lived, worked, and played. Old-fashioned crafts, games, candle making, soap making, and gardening will be explored.

Learn the art of script writing and practice proper upper- and lower-case letters. Druidawn: Writing, Role-Playing and World Forklore (1-3 and 4-7) Motivating for reluctant (or enthusiastic!) writers, this year’s fantasy role-playing game takes players through worlds populated by magical creatures of folklore. Blending creative writing with cooperative gaming, players increase their character’s “power” with each word they write. New adventures every week!

You’ll experience different books each day, and after each story and discussion you’ll write a story and learn to draw step-by-step pictures of people, animals and insects with details and settings. At week’s end you’ll take home a notebook journal to continue at home. Journaling is fun but it is also based on state standards for student learning—so it’s educational, too!

Along with great stories you’ll enjoy fun activities while learning about characters, settings, fiction and nonfiction. Learn to re-tell a story. Practice partner reading techniques using “I Read, You Read” and a readers’ theatre will add to the fun. Let the love of reading begin!

Learn to write mysterious messages, make and break codes, and find out how different people in history (like Julius Caesar!) tried to keep communication top secret.

Settlers of Catan (4-7)You’ll enjoy this German board game as you build settlements, roads and cities while embarking on a quest to settle the island of Catan. Through acquiring resource cards, careful building, and the luck of the dice you’ll be the next ruler of Catan. The layout of the board changes every game, which captures your interest and inspires you to play some more and win.

Sign Language (1-3 and 4-7)Here’s a chance to learn how to talk with your hands and communicate with a deaf or hard-of-hearing friend. You’ll learn the basic sign language alphabet, how to sign songs, and how to carry on a brief conversation.

NEW! Charlotte’s Web, the Animal Planet and You! (1-3)Children will read and discuss E. B. White’s children’s classic “Charlotte’s Web,” as well as view the recent film adaption of the book. A fun time will be had by all as they participate in group activities role playing various animals, to better understand an outsider’s individual perspective on the world. The final week class activity will be a puppet show presentation based on one of the episodes in the book.

NEW! Advanced Manufacturing I (4-7)Explore transportation technologies, including the basics of advanced manufacturing design and 12-volt DC energy and circuits. Students will also take a field trip to Stark State College’s Automotive Transportation Center and to a related advanced manufacturing or automotive company. (Permission forms will be sent home on the first day; transportation provided). This class is held over two time slots in the afternoon.

Animals Inside and Out I (4-7)Take a look at animal insides as we dissect several of the animal kingdom’s most interesting species such as frogs, jellyfish, and a crayfish.


Animals Inside and Out II (4-7)Let’s discover more animal insides – this time we’ll explore a worm, starfish and a shark, as well as another surprise or two.


Animal Science (1-3)Enjoy hands-on science experiments to explore how animals survive in their environment. Have you ever wondered what helps polar bears survive in the cold? How do duck feathers repel water? What do owls eat? Join us to find out!


Basic AutoCAD (4-7)Attention future builders, manufacturers, electricians, and engineers: get introduced to the world of computer-aided design and learn how it’s used in the construction and manufacturing industries. You’ll create and print simple designs.

NEW! Bugs, Bugs Everywhere (1-3)So much bug fun: learn about the life cycle of an insect, sketch different insects and learn more about butterflies! Make your own caterpillar, build an insect collection jar, learn about entomophagy and vermicomposting.

Digital Camera Capers (4-7)We can take pictures ALL THE TIME now with our cell phones. How do I take a good picture? How do I organize my pictures and free up memory on my phone? Learn about photography, how to organize photos and what to do with your pictures once they are taken. Create a poster collage of your favorite pics (to be printed out at home). Learn how to make a slideshow of your favorite pictures to show to friends and family. Please bring your cell phone and the cord to connect it to the computer so we can manipulate the pictures!

Environmental Engineering (4-7) Learn how to use energy from the sun to make solar robots and cars.Then you can examine the effects of gravity by competing in an old-fash-ioned egg drop and building your own mini trebuchet so you can imagine gravity and aerodynamics in action.

We will explore both “Creative” and “Survival” worlds including Mods, Maps, and Mining. From beginners to advanced players, there will be something for all!

Movie Maker (4-7) Once you take a video, what do you do with it? Learn how to put short movies and pictures together to make a movie to share with friends and family. We will put transitions, titles and credits into your movie. We’ll be tapping into your creativity so bring your ideas and your imagination for a video. Owls, Birds, Snakes and Frogs (1-3) If you enjoy exploring all the fauna around us, this course is for you. Examine what owls eat by dissecting owl pellets and comparing owls from Western and Eastern regions. Embark on a journey of beauty of the birds around us and design your own bird house. Take a nature hike in search of black snakes that make the campus their home and then return to the classroom to design your own (wooden) snake friend. The week will end with a lesson on the life cycle of frogs.


NEW! Scavenger Hunt Math (1-3) Math is much more than numbers on a paper! Have fun using math to solve mysteries and complete scavenger hunts. Use numbers to unlock and solve each scavenger hunt! Are you ready? You never know what you may find!

You will look at multiple modes of transportation, be given a model and try to make YOUR model go faster and further than your peers. This class is geared towards the student who likes to solve problems, use their skills and be confident of their design (even if it needs adapted).


NEW! Things that Grow (1-3) Create your own pot and plant a Wisconsin Fast Plant to see how fast it grows. Learn about the plant life cycle, plant milkweed pods so you can help area Monarchs flourish and create your own wind chime to commemo-rate all of your new knowledge.


NEW! Video Game Design (4-7) Create a 2D side scrolling game for your Windows-based PC: construct levels, add hazards and enemies to your map, and complete the project with finishing touches like teleporters and inventory items. Save it and take home to play all summer!

Vintage Toys for Modern Day Kids (1-3) Kids, your parents might remember playing with Tinker Toys, Silly Putty, Lite Bright, Slinky, Magic Slate, Spirograph, Pick-up-Sticks, or Etch-a-Sketch … but have you? These toys provide a natural way to learn about science, experiment with simple machines, promote eye-hand coordination, develop math concepts like spatial relationships, shape recognition, measuring and comparing. Teamwork, creativity, perseverance and problem-solving skills will also be enhanced as we interact with these class toys. We’ll look at how these toys were designed, developed, and became family favorites. We’ll research the inventors to learn how an idea turned into a reality. Come and play with us.

NEW! Weather or Not? (1-3) Create your own weather vane. Learn about tornados and make a tornado model (students will need two 2-liter bottles) and make a weather wheel so you can teach your family what you have learned.


Hobbies and Recreational Activities

Animals Galore (1-3)Lions, tigers and bears, oh my! We’ll read books to learn cool facts about all kinds of different animals, checking out where they live and what they eat. We’ll also be doing crafts to go along with these animals.


Balloon Man I (1-3 and 4-7)Ever wonder how they turn those balloons into monkeys, palm trees, dinosaurs and crazy hats? Well, now you can learn how to do it yourself and be the life of the next party! The class includes a starter kit of 100 balloons, pump and workbook.

Balloon Man II (1-3 and 4-7)Here’s an advanced balloon class where you can learn how to make more creative objects and characters. You need to be able to blow up the balloon and tie it, and Vern will share some of his neat creations with you.

Pets and People (1-3 and 4-7) Do you have a pet or would you like one? Come share what you know about your pet and learn about what it takes to care for a pet, understand that animals have feelings too, and discover that companion animals and people share many of the same needs. Representatives from the Humane Society will bring a few pets for us to meet and families will have the opportunity to donate items to our local shelter.


NEW! Puppets on Parade (1-3) Create different types of puppets and bring them to life with your creativity!


NEW! Slime Time (1-3) Whats ooey, gooey, and so much fun? Slime! Learn how to combine a variety of substances to create slime for stretching, gooping, pasting, and more. How many kinds of slime can we make? Join us and find out!


Teamwork (1-3)Teams can accomplish things one person alone cannot. Through fun activities and games, you’ll learn to be a great team player. In fact, you’ll be so busy having fun you won’t realize the important team and work skills you’ll be gaining for future sports and school activities.


Cross Stitch and Sewing (4-7)Count your thread line by line, make an “X” you’ll do just fine. Come and learn how to cross stitch by creating some simple creations. Simple sewing techniques will also be practiced.

Legomania! (1-3) Just imagine a room full of Legomaniacs and buckets of Legos! You’ll self-explore provided Lego sets to create unique and new pieces and bounce ideas off each other. Four days of fun and you’ll have a new Lego set to take home!


Let’s Have a Party (1-3)Celebrate the summer with theme parties! Learn about Mardi Gras traditions and experience a Hawaiian luau. How about a rodeo round-up or a pajama party? There’s no limit to what kind of party we might throw.


Magic! Magic! Magic! (1-3 and 4-7)Discover the enchantment of magic as you experience the thrill of learning and performing magical effects. Your friends will wonder how you did those tricks! All participants will receive magic tricks and expert instruction on performing these tricks.

NEW! Pen Pals - Explore the World with a Friend (1-3 and 4-7) What do you get when you combine paper, a pen, an envelope and a stamp? A new friend! Explore what it means to be a pen pal and meet a friend from another state or even a foreign country. We’ll welcome a foreign exchange student into our classroom to learn about their culture and experience here in our country as well as learn about the letter writing process. Information will be sent home for parents to review before addresses are shared.
