SIXTH GRADE ELA CURRICULUM

READING – •Text= Elements of Fiction- Holt, Rinehart and Winston•Text includes poetry, short stories, folk tales, myths•Text- based around themes students can connect to their everyday lives•NOVELS= Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit, Bud not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis•Independent Reading- AR two books a term read outside the classroom with an assessment in class

GRAMMAR/WRITING•Text = Elements of Writing as well as other sources for writing.•Text supports curriculum of writing, usage and mechanics, and using resources. • Also- The Collins Writing Program which we will be using this year. •This program emphasizes writing fluency through frequent, usually short, writing tasks, while specific writing skills (sentence variety, organization, word choice etc.) are addressed in longer, more detailed assignments.

• VOCAB AND SPELLING• Vocabulary development- through text and additional

resources• Spelling- Use of Frequently Misspelled Word Lists as

well as emphasis on misused words/ homophones

• Text= McDougal Littell World History: Ancient Civilizations.

• The sixth grade study of ancient civilizations begins with early man and continues through the fall of the Roman Empire.

Grading and Homework• HOMEWORK

– Mon- Thursday sometimes longer projects on weekends.

• HOW IS HOMEWORK GRADED?

Homework will be graded by a √+,√and √-.

• √+ = 25 points

• √ = 20 points

• √- = 15 points• Late homework is accepted the next day, for an automatic √- .

• After this, students will receive a zero for that homework assignment.

• Each week ( Mon-Thurs.) will be added for a weekly homework grade.

• You will receive an email home if a student has more than three missing homeworks per term.
