New Faces------------------------------------Once again faces have been changing at the

Baby Boom------------------------------------This year has seen the arrival of two Calvert

Trust babies. Congratulations to Mark

(Activity Team) who has a beautiful baby

boy and to Zoe (Customer Service Team)

who has a beautiful baby girl and to both

their partners. Well done!

We can also expect another patter of tiny feet

in the New Year. Catherine our Fundraising

Manager is expecting her second baby which

is due in January; we wish her all the best,

for a quick and safe arrival.

World Cup Wonders------------------------------------Love it? Hate it? This year saw the return of the World Cup. To celebrate we had a World Cup village set up in our games room complete with flags and banners, two large TV’s and seating for all our avid fans. Every match was LIVE, with special snacks and drinks available throughout.

A raffle was organised for guests and staff

to have the chance to win Zakumi, the World

Cup mascot, with the winner drawn after

the final match - well done to Fiona, one of

our carer’s who’s lucky number was drawn.

A special big thank you to our gap students

for organising and running the whole event.

It’s lovely when we hear that you, our guests have had a great time with us. It lets us know that we are doing a good job. Over the past few months we have had some lovely feedback - here are a few of your comments:

“We collected Ian after his week’s holiday

at the centre on Saturday. It was immediately

apparent to us both how happy and relaxed

he was and how well he looked. It was

thrilling for us to see him like that and thanks

must once again go out to all the staff who

had given him such a good week’s holiday.

We are always confident that he will be well

looked after and his weeks up at Kielder do

make a big difference to Ian and he always

looks forward to the next one. Well done to

all your wonderful staff and big thanks from

us and of course Ian, keep up the good work.”

Hollingsworth family - Activity Holiday

“I would just like to write and say thank

you for making our break away so memorable,

we only stayed for 5 days but felt we could

have stayed a little longer. It was our first

visit to the Calvert Trust and it was just what

we needed, a nice combination of beautiful

scenery and walks with an amazing choice

of activities if we wanted to take part in.

I have never been sailing before and I really en-

joyed it there are not many places where you

can be hoisted into a sailing boat and it was

wonderful to have this opportunity, I also had

an hour’s session on the zip wire which

Thank You------------------------------------------

Have Your Say On Theme Weeks------------------------------------Blokey week:

This year we had our first Men only week

- Blokey week. During the week the guys

designed and built a squirrel platform that

would then be erected during a go wild

week. They also had a curry night, a trip

out to watch the Newcastle Vipers and

a very informative talk on brewing and

tasting beer which they all enjoyed, and

some enjoyed a bit more than others!

Things the guests said when asked how

to make this week better and what was

the best thing about the week...

“You couldn’t explain how to make a

perfect week better”

“The extra effort put in by the staff was fabu-

lous”

“Letting my hair down on beer tasting

night”

was exciting exhilarating and amazing this was

two fantastic activities that I have never done.

I would love to come back and visit you again

and we will definitely be booking up to come

back. Thank you all once again, the staff were

outstanding”.

McMahon family - Self Catering Holiday

“Just to say a big thank you to the team at

Kielder for supporting our children and making

it such a great weekend for them. They had a

wonderful time”.

Balliol Primary School - School Residential

“I recently attended your sailing week for

the first time and absolutely loved it! My

favourite boats are the Challenger and the

Wind Rider because I could sit in them without

an Aquaback. I have always felt that because I

require an Aquaback to sit in the boat to keep

my balance I am restricted, because of all the

straps. This week I was able to lean forward

to grab hold of ropes and really reach the tiller

to steer the boat myself. I also had to get used

to pushing the tiller the opposite way to the

way I wanted to go, for example if I wanted

to go to the left I had to push the tiller to the

right so I had to get used to using opposites.

Although my muscles ached and I was tired

every night it was a good tiredness because

I felt I had achieved something, all the guests

helped each other out and worked well

together as a team so well done everyone!

Thank you Calvert Trust”.

Chris Harris - Respite Care Holiday

Thank You-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fun Stuff------------------------------------Q. What did the fish say when he swam

into the wall?

A. Dam!

Q. Have you heard the joke about the

butter?

A. I better not tell you, it might spread.

Did you know?

The largest flower in the world, the rafflesia arnoldi, weighs 7 kg (15 pounds) and grows only on the Sumatra island of Indonesia. Its petals grow to 1.6 ft (1 metre) long and 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick.

Snails can sleep for 3 years without eating.

A cockroach will live nine days without it’s head, before it starves to death.

Charity Golf Tournament

On Friday 2nd July 13 teams took to the golf

course at Close House to raise funds for the

Trust. This year’s winners were Siemens Energy

who walked away with the Calvert Cup. The

day raised over £1,500. We would like to say

a huge thank you to all those who helped to

make the day a success.

Kilimanjaro

Our Fundraiser, Hazel Munro has been training

and preparing for her climb up Africa’s highest

mountain, Kilimanjaro. Later this October,

along with nine other climbers, she will be

jetting off to Tanzania to tackle the mammoth

climb. Hazel is hoping to smash her target of

£3,000 and has been gathering sponsorship,

doing raffles and various collections to raise

the funds for the challenge. You can help by

Spring 2010 Competition Winner------------------------------------Congratulations to Linda Dickinson

who was the lucky winner of our Spring

Newsletter competition. Linda received

£100 off her next holiday with us. Thank

you to all who took part. The correct

answers were: Indoor Climbing Wall,

Velcro Olympics and Archery.

Unwanted gifts make perfect prizes:------------------------------------Do you ever receive a gift that is just not what you wanted or you would use? Does it go straight in the bin?

If you answer yes, then you could help.

Please send us your unwanted gifts or

bring them with you on your next visit.

All gift donations can be re-used as

prizes for our quiz nights, bingo nights,

raffle prizes, or used for pamper weeks.

School Support

Newcastle School for Boys have adopted us

as their charity of the year. Back in July they

completed a Kilimanjaro climb of their own,

but they didn’t go all the way to Africa, in-

stead they worked together to do enough

climbs up a climbing tower to match the

same height.

A group of students from Mowden Hall School

spent the day at the centre helping with the

gardening. The children prepared and painted

over 20 hanging baskets which have really

brightened the place up!
