The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Morsels And Tidbits

Notes on the Scripture Today is the Fourth Sunday of Easter, but this is commonly referred to as “Good Shepherd Sunday,” as all the readings and prayers point us in that di-rection. The shepherd is indeed one of the most beloved images of God, and those who are not religious at all are familiar with the twenty-third psalm. While there is comfort in that familiarity, it is also easy to work almost on autopilot and simply fill the day with the first shepherd hymns that come to mind. But in doing so, we are not giving the liturgy its full due. This Sunday the focus is on leadership and vocations. Today, in a special way, we celebrate and encourage vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life. It’s important for every Catholic to participate in creating what the bishops call a “culture of vocations,” and that includes pray-ing for vocations and proposing vocations to young people. Many priests, sisters, and brothers have said that they first con-sidered a vocation when someone simply asked them if they would consider it. Do you know a special young person who might answer the call if you asked them the question? May I love May. It is my favorite month of the year. It is so beautiful – the weather is getting better and everything is blooming. It is also a very busy time for every-body. It is First Communions, Mother’s Day, Graduations and Memorial Day month. In all that business let us make sure we find time to enjoy it. Take time to smell the roses and admire the beauty around us. Our Lady of Fatima Novena We joyfully thank God for the great gift of Our Lady’s apparitions in Fatima, Portugal 100 years ago. The closeness of Our Lady to us and her call to return to the Gospel through prayer, sacrifice and conversion are as important for us today as they were in 1917. Please, join us, for the novena celebrations (9 days of prayers) – everyday at 8:30am, starting on May 4th until May 13th. Congratulations This weekend we are celebrating our First Communions and some of our sec-ond graders are approaching the table of the Eucharist for the very first time. As they experience God through the Eucharistic Meal, I hope and pray that they can grow closer with Him and our church community. Congratulations!!!

Last week, we continued a review of the design princi-ples established by the building committee; we fo-cused on the principles for the design and furnishings of the worship space: the church. Logically, I began with the baptismal font be-cause that is the place of our Catholic beginning which is why the font was placed at the entrance, to remind us of our baptism when we enter church and cross ourselves. Let me switch for a moment away from the liturgical sig-nificance of the font, and share the design and instal-lation challenges. Much to my surprise, this was one of the most complicated tasks in the church building pro-cess! The liturgical consultant wanted to insure the font was proportional to the space of the church, i.e. large enough to carry out both its symbolic function and sacramental use. Thus, it needed to be visible and convenient to those enter-ing; able to immerse infants and baptize adults. It could not be more prominent than the altar or appear insignifi-cant. The first decision was the overall design, which is now in place. The large “bowl” as the place for infant baptism, the kneeling location for adult baptism, with flowing

er. It took a great deal of searching to find the correct pump and heating unit. As I learned, there are no “font pumps” stores. (No google 25 years ago.) And for our architects, this was the first baptismal font they de-signed that required a pump. Without going into the de-tails, which I had forgotten, there was a standoff be-tween the consultant, the architect and the contractor. It was not clear who had specific responsibilities for each of the distinct steps involved: design, engineer-ing, construction. While the font project went forward, these questions (who gets paid for what) were not an-swered until the building was almost completed. And of course besides the leaking of the bowl, the pipes leading from the font to the pump began to leak into the lower level (Upton Hall). This was more of a project that I imagined – it seemed so simple. If I knew then what I know now, I am not sure we would have a font with flowing, warm water. But I am glad that the com-mittee stayed focused.

water l surrounded by ter-razzo. These requirements needed pumping, heat, and drainage. The consultant first suggest-ed an “antique” bowl. So, he took me on a tour of archi-tectural stores. A first for me - stores that purchase architectural pieces from buildings before demolition and then offer them for sale. We found few such bowls and then were concerned that cutting a hole in the bottom for draining might crack them. There was also concern about sealing and making it leak proof and even the possibility of leach-ing by toxins. This proved to be a journey of futility. The next decision was to design our own, which was done. We learned it is diffi-cult to make a large ceramic bowl (our desire) that does not crack during construc-tion. But this is what we did. Unfortunately, soon after installation, this bowl began to develop small cracks and so, small leaks. We tried a great number of sealers that worked temporarily, but not permanently. We were in the church for about a year when we com-missioned the beautiful brass bowl now in use, which has not leaked!! The committee wanted flow-ing water as well as a heat-

of the Church and gives the blessing of the Church. The presence of the minis-ter and the congregation visibly expresses the fact that marriage is an eccle-sial or church reality. CCC 1630 It therefore, only makes sense that the sacrament takes place in the building of a Catholic church. So, give glory to God and have a beautiful wedding in the sacred place that is our church. Then enjoy the reception in a park, beach, or arboretum. Want more? CCC 1659-1664 Questions? [email protected]

My daughter wanted her wedding in a beautiful ar-boretum. Why doesn’t the church allow this? Marriage is a vocation. Hopefully, the bride and groom have discerned that this is their vocation. The man and woman have dis-cerned that God calls them to live out their discipleship as a follower of Jesus in the sacrament of marriage. God calls people to live out their discipleship in the single life, marriage, or priestly/religious life. What-ever your vocation, it is a gift to the body of Christ, the Church. In marriage, it is not just about you or your spouse any more than a priest’s vocation is just about him. Our voca-tions are how we live our life for Christ in his church. So, the wedding is about the gift that your marriage is to the church. The priest or deacon who assists at the celebration of a mar-riage receives the consent of the spouses in the name

I’M GLAD YOU ASKED THAT QUESTION by, Sue Flanagan

THOUGHTS by, Pat Depcik

It was a dreary morning and the world looked awful-ly dull, when I spotted the two ducks wandering through my back yard. They were heading toward their usual nesting place under the evergreen trees. They stopped and just stood facing south, in their own little world, realizing their nesting place had dis-appeared. The trees had been removed because of a beetle infestation. The two came every year, the male and the female, and he was the more beau-tiful of the two. His lus-cious green, blue, black and white feathers far out-shone her dusty brown. They were a pair for as long as I can remember. It worried me as to where they would find somewhere else to nest and then lay and hatch their eggs. they waddled about for a short time and then headed north in the grass. He would move ahead a little and she would fall behind and stay. He would then stop and wait patiently until she joined him in the journey. Eventually, they were out of sight and I trusted they found a safe haven. I thought about what a wonderful world we have been given. How these two creatures could show the virtues of patience, for-titude and love. They were quiet and seemingly confi-dent of finding a new place. They belonged to God and He would tend to them. And He will tend to us. In Matthew 6, we read of not having two masters because it will not work.

God is the Provider and the Master. He stresses not to worry of material things or tomorrow. God knows what is needed and just as He cares for all creation, He will care for you.

A new tree will be planted in the spring and hopefully my two yearly visitors will find it again, and I will see them again as the gift that they are.

KNOWLEDGE AND PRAYER PROGRAM “PROTECTING YOUR CHURCH”

We have plans for emergencies in our schools, shopping centers, and movie theaters. Why not our church-es? Come to St. Francis of Assisi Center, 15050 S. Wolf Rd. Orland Park, 7 PM on Tuesday May 16th to find out what needs to be done. The purpose of the "Protecting Your Church" program is to bring to the attention of Church parishioners and leaders, the dangers that we could all face today in our own Churches. The presentation will high-light the fact that MOST of the churches in the USA have no plan whatsoever in place about how to respond to a "dangerous incident" and who at the church would be respon-sible to respond to such an incident. In general, our church-es are not at all prepared or equipped to deal with dangerous or inflammatory situations. The presenters are both well versed in personal safety and personal security matters. Bruce Johnson, is the President of Integrity Security Personnel, and is a 25 year veteran of the Illinois State Police. Tim Dilbeck, is a personal safety instruc-tor, and is active in the pro-life movement in Chicago. The program will enlighten all of us as to what to expect dur-ing a dangerous incident, and how to respond responsi-bly. The presentation is based upon the premise that it is not so much "if a dangerous incident may occur", but how to re-spond to a dangerous situation "when it occurs". With all that is happening to Church's throughout the world, now is the ideal time for such a program. Your attendance is welcomed and appreciated. This unique program is sponsored by the Respect Life Minis-tries of St. Bernard’s, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Michael, Our Lady of the Woods and Annunciation Byzantine in co-operation with Knights of Columbus local councils.

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima ap-paritions. To honor this special occasion, you are invited to participate in our parish novena (9 days) of prayer. At 8:30 am, starting May 4, the rosary and novena prayer will be recited in the Church. On Saturday, May 13th, a special Mass to honor of Our Lady of Fatima will be celebrated at 8:30 AM, followed by May Crowning. We celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13th. On this day in 1917, Our Lady made her first appearance to three shepherd children, Jacinta (age 7), Francisco (age 9) and Lucia (age 10), at Fatima in Portugal. She appeared to them once a month from May through October. The lives of the three children of Fatima were entirely transformed by the heavenly apparitions. While fulfilling the duties of their state with the greatest fidelity, those children seemed now to live only for prayer and sacrifice, which they offered in a spirit of reparation to obtain peace and the conversion of sinners. They deprived themselves of water during the periods of great heat; they gave their lunch to poor chil-dren; they wore around their waists thick cords that even drew blood; they abstained from innocent pleasures and urged one another to the practice of prayer and pen-ance with an ardor comparable to that of the great saints.

FINDING INNER PEACE AND EMPOWERMENT IN DIFFICULT TIMES - Portiuncula Center for Prayer

9263 W St. Francis Road, Frankfort, IL 60423

Date: Monday, May 22 Time: 9:30 - Noon Fee: $25

“Do not lose heart; we were made for these times.” These wise words written by Dr. Claris-sa Pinkola Estes serve as a reminder that we all embody more resilience, strength, and depth than we can imagine. In today’s challenging political and world climate, filled with increasing fear and violence, many of us are struggling with distress, discouragement, and confusion. How do we find hope and maintain our inner peace and open hearts without burying our heads in the sand? In this workshop together we will explore ways in which we can reawaken our sense of hope in the future, preserve and strengthen our inner peace, and open our hearts to one another in a renewed sense of connection and compassion. There will be time for group discussion, experiential exercises, and self-reflection. Facilitator: Barbara Fox is a LPC, holds a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and is a certified Domestic Violence Professional. Barbara loves guiding people on their journey to find deeper meaning in their dai-ly lives.

THE CALL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

The Twenty-third Psalm, today's re-sponsorial psalm, is arguably the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads "Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side / with your rod and your staff / that give me cour-age" (Psalm 23:4) connects this week's scriptures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shep-herd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our baptism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shep-herd: "I came so that they might have life and have it more abundant-ly" (John 10:10).
