Welcome to the Upcoming School Year! Happy Summer to All! I am thrilled to be joining the Pleasant Ridge family. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve had the opportunity to begin my transition and get to know more specifics about the school and the students. I want you to know that I am delighted to join such a warm and welcoming school community. Let me tell you a little bit about me. My career in education began long ago when I did educational outreach into elementary, middle, and high school settings. This work led me to pursue my Masters in Social Work. Over the last 16 years I have served in three schools in the Evanston/Skokie School District - as a Social Worker, as an Assistant Principal, and, most recently, as Principal. It’s been an amazing journey in Evanston and I’m proud of all that we accomplished in those schools. I am excited for what the future holds for all of us at Pleasant Ridge. My passion is people. I love the school setting because I have the privilege of working with children (who are the best part of the job!), passionate educators, and involved families. My number one goal is get to know all Pleasant Ridge students and what makes them tick. This knowledge provides me the necessary insight to make sure we are supporting and challenging all our students and ensuring that school is a meaningful experience. I am dedicated to supporting all facets of student development and have a strong desire to make sure we foster each student’s social and emotional development and well being. I’m looking forward to getting to know our staff and working with them to further develop goals and focus areas for our work with children at Pleasant Ridge.

On a personal note, I am the father of two lovely and energetic girls and my wife Jenny is a Special Education Teacher at Hoffman. Cayla (6), will be entering 1st grade next year and Josie (4) will be completing one more year of pre-school in the Fall. Since our daughter just completed her Kindergarten year I have a new appreciation for being ‘on the parent side’ of things. I empathize with the amazing journey and challenge that it can all be, and know the importance of school and home connecting and collaborating with each other. I am excited and honored to support the entire Pleasant Ridge community. I look forward to meeting you all in the coming months and partnering with you so that our students can be their personal best. I welcome your thoughts and perspectives as I begin to learn about the Pleasant Ridge learning community. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me, I can be reached at [email protected] or by phone at 847-657-2795. For now, keep your children busy with lots of play and free time, summer is an ideal time for kids to unwind and tap into their passions and hobbies. I hope you continue to enjoy summer with your families and get to do whatever it is that brings you joy and happiness. I’m hoping to shave a few strokes off my golf game (although golf does not always bring joy and happiness), and spend many summer evenings with the family. Here’s to some fulfilling down time before we get the 2017-18 school year underway...enjoy it!

Registration

Registration is not complete until you have updated your information online, paid your registration fees, and if needed proved residency.

Residency Process

The residency process for incoming 3rd grade students, students who have moved during the school year (even to temporary housing), renters whose leases have expired, and new students to the district must be completed at the District Office before your child will be placed in a class. You will not be able to get any information on Posting Day if you have not completed this residency process. In addition, District policy is that students will not be able to start the first day if the family has not completed the residency process.

PTA NEWS AND NOTES by Sharon Bux

Greetings Pleasant Ridge Families! As the newly elected Lyon/PR PTA president, I would like to welcome back our returning families and extend a warm welcome to our new Pleasant Ridge families! We look forward to welcoming and partnering with our new principal Erik Friedman. And to our wonderful teachers, staff, and administration, we appreciate all that you do and we will continue to work hard to support you! I am honored to work with our dedicated and supportive Lyon/PR PTA which consist of an eight-person Executive Board, a fifty-person General Board, and over 300 parent, teacher and administrative members, who advocate for our students, families, and staff. Through the PTA fundraising efforts, we are able to provide “extra” funds, programming, and resources to enrich our children’s educational experiences throughout the year. We personally invite you to become an involved member of the Lyon/PR PTA. To enroll

or renew your membership, go to our website to sign up and pay annual dues of $15 at www.lyonprpta.org. Your contribution, whether it is your time, knowledge, or resources, truly make a difference. The PTA continues to focus on improved communications with the Lyon/PR community. Last year we built a new website that was mobile friendly and allowed us to showcase event photos, volunteer opportunities and a PTA activity calendar. We will continue to update our website as well as send all families weekly e-Blasts to inform them of upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, and provide links to the newsletters published by the Lyon/PR schools. As we enter another exciting year, we have an outstanding Fall Enrichment Program planned, educational assemblies, author visits, International Night, and other programming that we look forward to sharing with you. In a couple of weeks, the PTA will distribute $25 - $75 gift cards to all teachers and certified school staff to help with their back-to-classroom shopping. In August, we will be delivering pre-purchased school supply kits to the classrooms. There are several upcoming fun, hands-on ways to get involved in the PTA and the school: Room Parents Our PTA Room Parent Coordinators, Shari Isaacs, and Dana Palmer are seeking two room parents for each classroom. If you are interested in becoming a room parent, please email them at [email protected] between Class List Posting Day, August 10th, and Wednesday, August 23rd at 12pm. Please provide your name, your child’s name, the classroom teacher, and your contact information. Please note that sending an email is the only way to volunteer. If there are multiple requests for the same classroom, a lottery system will be used to determine the assignments. International Night 2017 We are currently seeking country host and volunteers to help us celebrate the diversity and cultural heritage of our student,

faculty, and community at our annual 'International Night'. Join us on Friday, October 6th, from 6 pm to 8pm at Pleasant Ridge. Hosting a room allows you to showcase your heritage at this much-loved and well-attended event. Don’t miss this great opportunity to do something educational and fun with your kids! The event is free to all! To find out more, please visit the PTA website www.lyonprpta.org to see what we have done in the previous years or contact Chair Galia Polyanovsky at [email protected]. Fall Book Fair Our Fall Book Fair will take place Thursday, November 9, and Friday, November 10 at Lyon School. Thousands of books will be available, including new and noteworthy titles, state and national award winners, and favorite authors. Special family events will be held nightly. Contact Co-Chairs Rebecca Herlitz ([email protected]) or Niki Van Vuren ([email protected]) for more information on how to volunteer. Ways to support PTA programming from your home. Start of School Information and Notes:

The following are some of the processes and procedures at Pleasant Ridge School.

• Start of Day: Morning Supervision begins at 7:40am, please do not arrive earlier than this. Students can go into their classrooms at 7:45 a.m. The pledge and morning announcements are read at 7:50 a.m. Classes begin promptly at 7:55 a.m.

• To call in an illness, please dial the absence line voice mail at 847-657-2794(new phone number). If you arrive after 7:55 a.m., please go to the office to sign in. Please know that tardies are counted and reported on report cards.

• We encourage each child to leave the house prepared for the day. In order to minimize disruptions to the classroom, we have arranged two morning deliveries and one afternoon delivery time for items that are dropped off at the office. There will be no exceptions, even if children call home for items, please know that we will not be calling into classrooms and disrupting the learning of students in order to call a child out for items such as iPads, textbooks, homework, lunches or shoes being dropped off. These will be delivered with our regular rounds, (9:00,10:45 am and 1:30 pm ).

• At times, as parents, we need to relay an "emergency" message, and we are happy to help when these instances

arise. However, all non-emergency messages will be relayed to the students through our delivery system noted above. "Reminders" of after school events should be done before your child leaves for school. Please do not call the office to ask that your child be reminded to attend an after-school event.

• Changes in transportation can be confusing for children. If your child has several different ways to go home on different days -- a little schedule in his/her backpack will help organize them. In order to have the messages regarding changes in transportation at dismissal delivered in time, those calls need to be made no later then 1:30 so that we can ensure delivery.

• The Food Service Programs in District 34 are computerized; please be aware that the cashiers cannot accept cash at the time of food purchase. Students have their own cafeteria accounts, and use their ID cards to access these accounts to purchase breakfast and lunch. These cards stay in the Multi-Purpose Room. You can add money to your child’s account at any time. There are several ways to accomplish this: check or cash brought to school and given to the Food Service staff/kitchen, or online with your credit card. For more information about the meals program or how to access your child’s meal account, please visit www.glenview34.org/parents/foodServices/

• Bus route information will be available at the August 10th Posting Day at Lyon School. Questions about bus routes should be directed to the District’s Transportation Coordinator, Rob Conner ([email protected]), who can be reached at 847-998-5064. Students who ride a bus will receive a bus pass the first day of school; the pass should be attached to their backpacks. All students riding buses will be expected to remain seated with their seat belts secure for the entire ride. All electronic devices, including cell phones and ipads should remain in their

backpacks. Please remember that students may ride only the bus to which they have been assigned and, therefore, cannot switch to another bus. If your child forgets something on a bus (ie:backpack or musical instrument) you should call the bus company direct: 847-674- 0090, please know the bus number of your child (PR#?).

• Our goal is to maintain a safe and secure environment for all of our students. The District will be implementing a new safety procedure at the beginning of school. At the end of this newsletter you will find a letter from Superintendent Delli. You will be hearing more about this new procedure before school starts. The District will be sending out a letter outlining the new safety measures, and we will be posting that information on our Pleasant Ridge website before school begins. If all the information is available at the time of posting we will include it in the family envelopes.

• We welcome visits by parents, but all visits to the classroom must be cleared with your child's teacher beforehand, in order to avoid disrupting instruction.

• Students are not to sell or trade items such as candy, gum, cards, bracelets. All items intended for sale or sold for profit will be confiscated.

Before and After-School Care Before and after-school care is available through Wesley Child Care. For further information on these programs, please contact Jennifer Quintas at 847-729-0184.

Pick-Up and Drop-Off Procedures at Pleasant Ridge Our goal is always to provide a safe and secure environment for all Pleasant Ridge students. Please be patient and aware as you do pick-up and drop-off. At Pleasant Ridge, all buses

arrive and depart from the North Parking Lot. Following the procedures below will maximize the traffic flow and minimize the risk to students.

• Students should ride their assigned buses whenever possible; if you must drive, try to carpool. This decreases the number of cars, making arrival and dismissal times safer for our students.

• Please do not make U-turns on Sunset Ridge Road.

• Please do not use cell phones or two-way radios while driving in the pick-up and drop-off area. Please know that you may be issued a ticket by the Glenview Police for using a cell phone on or near school grounds.

• The driveways in front of the building are reserved for bus and emergency vehicle parking only. For the safety of our students, we cannot mix buses, cars, and children in the same area.

• When students are being loaded or unloaded, the buses have their lights flashing with their stop signs out, making it illegal to pass, even in a parking lot. Please do not pass a bus in the parking lot during drop off in the morning or dismissal in afternoon. You are expected to wait until the buses have departed the parking lot before moving your vehicle.

• Students may not change pick-up plans on their own. We must have a note or a call from the parents when there is a change of plans. Please note that all messages regarding transportation issues need to be in no later than 1:30 p.m. Drop-off Drop-off begins at 7:40 (or when buses have departed): For Cars Departing School and Heading South towards Lake Street

• Enter the South Parking Lot from Sunset Ridge Road.

Circle around the parking circle and drop off student(s) in the loading area in front of the school. Cars should exit the parking lot and turn right only onto Sunset Ridge Road. There are no left turns permitted from the South Parking Lot. Please be aware that you may be issued a ticket from the Glenview Police for turning left from this parking lot.

• Students from this entry point come into the building through the main office doors.

For Cars Departing School and Heading North towards Winnetka Road or South towards Lake Street, and all buses.

• Enter the North Parking Lot from Kenilworth Lane, forming a single lane in front of the building when dropping off students. Follow the driveway and drop off student(s) in the loading area in front of the school. Cars should exit the parking lot and turn right or left onto Sunset Ridge Road.

• Students from this entry point will come into the building through the north doors near the Multi-Purpose Room. Other Drop-off Safety Notes:

• Buses utilize the North Parking Lot only.

• Bike racks are located on the south side of the building.

• Students should use the available walkways and sidewalks whenever possible.

• Please move your car forward as soon as you can, so that the drop-off lines can continue to move. Pick-up at Dismissal For Cars Departing School and

Heading South towards Lake Street.

• Enter the South Parking Lot from Sunset Ridge Road. Circle around the parking circle. A line will form in the loading area in front of the school. At dismissal, students will be released to go to this car area. Children will be called to their cars and released. Cars should exit the parking lot and turn right only onto Sunset Ridge Road.

For Buses and Cars Departing School and Heading North towards Winnetka Road or South towards Lake Street.

• Buses will line up first in the North Parking Lot. Students will be loaded onto buses, and buses will be sent to do their routes by 2:35pm.

• Cars enter the North Parking Lot from Kenilworth Lane, after the buses have been released. Cars will form a single lane in front of the building, and students will be released to their cars in the loading area in front of the school. Cars should exit the parking lot and turn right or left onto Sunset Ridge Road. Other Pick-up Notes:

• Walkers and bike riders are dismissed after the buses and cars leave the parking lot, minimizing the danger to our students.

• Please remain in your car.

• When you have picked up your child, please move your car as quickly as you can so that another car can move up in line.

• Please do not try to circumvent the pick-up procedure by

asking your child to meet you at a different place; doing so jeopardizes a student’s safety.

Pick-up from After-School Activities -- All students are dismissed from the Main South Entrance

• Please enter the South Parking Lot (main office entrance), forming a single line in front circle (loading area) along the curb. Please do not double park.

• Please remain in your car.

• When you have picked up your child, please move your car as quickly as possible so that another car can move up in line.

Thank you for helping us make Pleasant Ridge School a safe environment for our students.

Starting Times at all Intermediate Schools is 7:55 A.M.

The first bell rings at 7:50, this is the alert that school will begin in 5 minutes. Students are considered tardy after 7:55. Morning announcements are made daily at 7:50 about events during the day and other important information. It is very important for students to be on time to facilitate the start of their day with the knowledge and information to be successful. Depending on your child’s grade level, they will begin their day with Reading or Math instruction, so promptness is important. If they arrive late to school, they will lose valuable learning time. If tardiness continues, the time lost to instruction quickly accumulates and will have a negative impact on their learning. The late entry into the homerooms interrupts all the students from learning. Please help us start the day off right by helping your children arrive on time to school.

Dismissal Arrangements

If you need to change the after school pick-up arrangements for your child, please call our office before 1:30 pm to inform us of the changes. As you can imagine, there is much activity going on in a school office both at the start and end of the school day. By calling before 1:30 pm, you are giving the front office staff the time needed to locate classroom teachers and communicate the message regarding the pick-up arrangements for your child in a timely manner.

FOOD SERVICE NEWS! Glenview School Café Best Bites:

The Food Service Department is part of the USDA’s National School Lunch Program. The NSLP has guidelines and rules that we must follow in our District. The mission of the NSLP is to improve nutrition and reduce childhood obesity because our Nation depends on it. Schools are the only place where the USDA Dietary Guidelines are being followed. In addition, school food service personnel are certified in sanitation and must fulfill professional development hours each year.

All students are welcome to participate in our program!

School Lunches are FIVE STAR meals consisting of five food components: FRUITS VEGETABLES PROTEIN WHOLE GRAINS DAIRY

Currently, students are asked to choose a fruit or vegetable with their lunch. Signs identifying the meals and its components will be posted daily as the students enter the lunchroom. Food items will be color coded to help students choose all of the required items.

To make a “complete lunch”, students must choose at least 3 of the 5 components; one of these choices MUST be a Fruit or Vegetable. Students can choose all 5 components.

A higher Ala Carte price will be charged for meals that do not contain a fruit or vegetable. If your student usually gets a free or reduced price lunch or your student pays the full price, you would also be charged the higher Ala Carte price if a complete meal is not selected.

Glenview School District 34 Meal Procedures: Glenview District 34 offers lunch at all schools and breakfast at Glen Grove, Hoffman, Pleasant Ridge, Springman and Attea. Our mission is to provide safe, nutritious, tasty meals to all students. Good nutrition fosters proper growth and development to prepare students to learn at their optimal level during the school day. We participate in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program and meet all of the nutritional requirements of these programs. We offer healthy entrée options that meet the calorie, fat and sodium guidelines set forth by the USDA. We offer a variety of fresh fruit and vegetable options daily, including local produce and all grains offered are whole grain rich. Our entrée items are an age appropriate portion size, fruits and vegetables are offered in half-cup portions and eight ounces of skim milk is offered in plain and flavored varieties with no sugar added. Milk is sold separately for those who bring lunch from home. All students may participate in our meals program. FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEALS: Families may apply for assistance by filling out the 2017-18 meals application. A new meal application must be filled out each new school year. Free and reduced price meals are provided to families that meet the federal established income guidelines. Some families qualify through the State of Illinois Direct Certification program and will receive a letter from us stating they don’t have to fill out the application. MEAL PAYMENTS: Money can be added to a student lunch account by check sent directly to the school, or by using the link to a credit card system found here http://glenview.revtrak.net LUNCH ID CARDS: At the middle school, a new lunch card, which is also their ID, is provided to the students on the first day of classes. At the primary and elementary schools, lunch ID cards are provided to the teachers and kept at school. At Henking, Lyon and Westbrook schools lunch cards are given to the student prior to lunch service and then given to the cashier when they have selected their lunch.

At Glen Grove, Hoffman and Pleasant Ridge, students retrieve their lunch cards from pockets in the lunchroom, select their lunch and then give their card to the cashier. Cards are kept secure when not in use. At Springman and Attea, students are responsible for their own cards and must have them to enter the food court. LUNCH BALANCES: The lunch card/ account is a debit system. Students must have money on their card to purchase meals. Students who qualify for free meals do not need to have money on their account, unless they choose to purchase milk only, or they attend Springman or Attea and intend to purchase ala carte items. Reduced price meals cost $ .30 cents for breakfast and $ .40 cents for lunch. An automated email sends low balance reminders when a student’s account reaches $10.00. Delinquent accounts will be addressed through contacting the parent by mail and phone calls. Because we don’t want any child to go hungry, students with negative balances will be given an alternative meal; this meal will be charged to the child’s account. Students will be expected to bring money the next day. Lunch is an important component in academic achievement and we want to ensure your child can access the daily lunch offerings. Therefore, parents need to make sure that their child’s lunch account has money available in it. SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS: Please contact the Director of Food Services if your child has any special dietary needs to see if they can be accommodated through the Food Services Department. Please visit our webpage at www.glenview34.org/foodservice For any questions regarding meal accounts or status, please contact: Kimberly Cleveland Cheryl Flicek Director of Food Services Food Services Administrative Assistant 2500 Chestnut Avenue [email protected] Glenview, IL. 60026 847-486-7702 [email protected] 847-486-7711

FOOD GUIDELINES FOR DISTRICT 34 Glenview School District is continuing to promote healthy living and lifestyle choices for its students. The Wellness Policy was adopted to educate students about healthy food choices and to help reduce childhood obesity.

No Food Items at Birthday Parties

District 34 does not allow food or beverages at birthday parties at school. Instead, there are several suggestions below for parents and children who still want to celebrate a birthday without food, including:

- Special time/special recognition during class. Examples include the student reading to the class, sharing a personal story with the class or selecting a fun activity from a list provided by the teacher.

- Purchase a book for the classroom library. This might include the student’s name in the front of the book, indicating it was donated by the student in celebration of a birthday. Bring in a non-food item/party favor (i.e. - pencils, erasers, stickers). Please, no disruptive items. If you need help deciding, please contact the school for guidance. Donate an indoor recess game to the classroom. Please know all celebratory activities should be cleared with the classroom teacher in advance but that no food or beverages will be allowed as part of these celebrations. Administrators throughout the District are responsible for implementing this practice.

Food Guidelines for Non-Birthday Classroom Celebrations Food and beverages can be a part of non-birthday classroom celebrations like Halloween and holiday parties. However, those food and drink items will be chosen from a list of menu options developed by the Food Service Department and Wellness Committee. The guidelines can be found at www.glenview34.org/parents/foodServices/ under the Links/Forms section. No homemade foods are

allowed. If you have questions or comments about this change in practice, you may contact your building principal or the District office at 998-5000.

Birthday Party Invitations

Please do not send Birthday Party invitations to school for your child or teacher to distribute.

We want your child’s birthday party celebration to be a fun and positive experience. If you are holding a birthday party for your child, please email your invitations or deliver them to the recipients’ homes.

School District #34

Students in District #34 have the opportunity to join the school band or orchestra starting in 4th grade. Students who do not start instrumental instruction in 4th grade can still join in any grade 5-8. On August 25, 2017, the instrumental music staff will present the instruments to all 4th and 5th grade students. On Tuesday, August 29, 2017, 7:00pm at Attea, there will be a Beginning Band and Orchestra Parent Night where more detailed information will be available about the instrumental program, enrollment procedures and obtaining an instrument. Over the following 2 weeks, directors will work with individual students to select an appropriate instrument.

Instruction is available in flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, percussion, violin, viola, cello and bass.

Many families already have an instrument from a family member or friend that their student is interested in playing. Please take that instrument to a local music store over the summer to have it checked out and repaired if necessary. August is a very busy time for music stores, and it will take longer to service your instrument if you wait. Lessons for beginning students will start the week of September 11th, so please make plans accordingly.

Playing an instrument can be a big commitment, but it is also very rewarding. Ensemble playing teaches teamwork, cooperation and responsibility, as well as providing an outlet for students’ creativity. There are many other benefits to participation in instrumental music, as well.

Benefits of Instrumental Music

Scientific American’s (2010) board of editors asserted, “Studies have shown that assiduous instrument training from an early age can help the brain to process sounds better, making it easier to stay focused when absorbing other subjects, from literature to tensor calculus.” Hearing the music, honing the mind. (2010). Scientific American, 303(5), 16.

On the 2012 SAT, students who participated in music scored an average of 31 points above average in reading, 23 points above average in math, and 31 points above average in writing. College Board SAT, 2012 College-Bound Seniors: Total Group Profile Report.

July 2017

Dear District 34 Families, As part of the district’s continued review of its security procedures, you will experience a significant -- but important—change when visiting our buildings this coming school year. We appreciate your attention to this communication given its impact on all visitors to District 34 schools. Recently, we installed new technology that locks the interior doors from the main vestibule into the front office at each school at district office. This change will allow for increased safety and security for students and staff, and more closely align District 34 with the practices of surrounding districts. Moving forward, whenever visiting a District 34 building, you will no longer have immediate access to the front office. Instead, our front office staff will first need to correctly identify you through a security camera and have a confirmed reason for your visit. You will then gain access. As with past practice, you will still need to be run through our Raptor System prior to entering the school from the front office. This method for how visitors enter school buildings is all rooted in the understanding that locking the interior door would provide another method to slow down a potential threat to school environments. If, for instance there was a perceived threat, main office staff could have additional time to utilize panic hardware to alert staff, students and first responders with a pre-recorded lock down message. With that said, we understand this will be a cultural shift for our community. However, it is an important change to provide increased security measures to everyone in our schools. We also appreciate being able to work closely with Glenview Police, Glenview Fire and a security consultant in order to receive their critical input to inform all changes we consider as it relates to the well being of our community. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this change to enhance the safety and security of our buildings. Sincerely, Dane Delli, Ph.D. Superintendent

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Change in Access to District 34 Schools

Q: When can we expect this change to occur? A: The change is effective beginning the first day of school. Q: Why is District 34 making this change? A: After discussion with Glenview first responders, the district learned it was inconsistent with recommended security measures. It was also inconsistent with other districts that all keep their interior or exterior school doors to the front office locked. Additionally, as we continued to review several long-term health life safety projects and finalized our crisis plans, it became clear that additional measures should be made as it relates to visitor management at all of our schools. Q: Was this change in practice made in response to any one specific event in District 34? A: No. These security measures are considered common practice in schools based off the recommendations of first responders and security experts. Q: How does this enhance the overall security of the building? A: This change in security essentially allows us to slow down a potential threat to school environments. If, for instance there was a perceived threat, main office staff could have additional time to utilize panic hardware to alert staff, students and first responders with a pre-recorded lock down message. Q: What if I am just coming to school to drop off my child’s lunch or need to leave something at the front office? In other words, I do not need full access to the school? A: All visitors to District 34 schools will need to state the purpose of their visit before they can enter the front office. Even if you need to just drop something off, you will need to be visible to our front office staff in the security camera and state the reason for your visit. Q: What can we expect during afternoon pick-up when many parents are entering the building or children are leaving? A: We have every expectation that all visitors will continue to utilize this new security system in order to gain access to the building. Any staff member holding the door to allow for children to exit the building will still require you to utilize the security system to have access to the front office.

Atentamente, Dane Delli, Ph.D. Superintendente
