Mo0va0on for Understanding Emissions
QuanOtaOve emission informaOon is needed for: • AccounOng for the past • Observing and calculaOng the present • PredicOng and projecOng the future • Taking acOon on emissions • Making choices: Which “knob” to turn? Is one beIer than the other? Ø Do current emissions data meet our needs? Ø How can these data be improved while maximizing sparse resources?
Ac#ons and decisions about the atmosphere focus on emissions

The Need for an Emissions Community

Complexity • SpaOal/temporal scales • Source types • Interdisciplinary Development • Inconsistencies • Timeliness • Traceability
Analysis • EvaluaOons • UncertainOes • Impacts Communica#on • Data access and sharing • Literature access • Producer – user feedbacks
At the same #me, there are many issues and needs associated with emissions data
Many emissions data requirements are common to air quality and climate research, regula#on, & policy • Transparency • Consistency
• Accuracy • Timeliness
• Uncertainty
Frost et al., Atmos. Environ., 2012
The best informa#on about emissions is developed by a broad community with diverse exper#se
Originally Global focus è now Global + Regional + Megacities
Global Emissions Ini0A0ve
Early GEIA history • GEIA was formed in 1990 as part of IGAC • Goal: Establish emission inventories for trace species from anthropogenic and natural sources • Working groups were formed, in order to develop one “best” inventory for 1980-‐1985 for most species
• More than 20 groups were formed, and this set of emissions became know as the “GEIA inventories” • Past GEIA chairs:
-‐ T. Graedel: 1990-‐1996 -‐ G. Marland: 1996-‐1998 -‐ J. Olivier and D. Cunnold: 1998-‐2004
Recent GEIA History • IGBP restructuring in 2004-‐2005 è FormaOon of the AIMES project of IGBP AIMES = Analysis, IntegraOon and Modeling of the Earth System • Goals of AIMES: Integrate IGBP sub-‐projects’ research è GEIA became an AIMES subproject è Co-‐chairs: A. Guenther and C. Granier (2005-‐2011)
• AIMES focuses more on the carbon cycle and greenhouse gases è In 2010, the GEIA co-‐chairs proposed that GEIA become a joint IGAC-‐iLEAPS-‐AIMES project
GEIA Ac0vi0es Developing the GEIA Network Moving from “best inventory” goal to access to available
emission data Developing the GEIA emissions portal Standardizing emissions data formats and documentaOon Developing the ECCAD emissions database Organizing conferences
• 15 between 1991 and 2012 Helping organize summer schools
• Successful school in 2007, another planned in 2013 Facilitate emissions data evaluaOons and assessments Prepare state-‐of-‐the-‐science emissions summaries Support internaOonal scienOfic projects New Direc8ons Demonstrate potenOal of improving inventories
• Promote interoperability of datasets & tools • Make use of near-‐real-‐Ome observaOons

Town Hall Discussion IdenOfy current capabiliOes to produce beIer emission informaOon in support of science and policy Discussion will form basis for planning GEIA’s next steps (e.g., SC MeeOng) and will help guide the community’s emissions research direcOons Topics: 1. Emission InformaOon for the Assessment of Air Quality & Climate 2. Emission InformaOon for Control Measures and Planning 3. Improving Community ConnecOons for Emissions Small groups meet in half-‐hour discussion blocks Each group discusses above topics by answering 3 quesOons:
• What are the main limitaOons in present emission informaOon (communicaOon methods) for this applicaOon?
• What are the main innovaOon methods that can be used to overcome such limitaOons?
• What are emerging prioriOes for emission work (improving communicaOon and interoperability)?
