REGIONAL UPDATE The WCA is very busy producing promotional items including our website, video, and an
array of marketing material including posters, bookmarks, journals and pins. As these items
become available they will be distributed to our partners where visitors will be able to find
them at participating venues, such as Tourism
Visitor Centres and Museums.
The Chief’s of Ontario held a two day Roundtable discussion focussing on how the
First Nations can get involved in the commemorations for the Bicentennial. They
are hosting the Assembly of First Nations AGM in 2012 and are looking at producing a
theatrical piece for the event to share First Nation stories and perspectives on their role
in the War of 1812. This production will be available to travel throughout the Bicentennial.
Zach Melnick from Lock3Media created a
promotional video for the WCA. Bill Darfler
starts by telling the social impact story of the rural raiding within the Western Corridor
during the war. Several of our members are then interviewed about the projects they are
working on for the Bicentennial. You can find the video on our Website;
www.westerncorridor1812.com
I have spoken at UEL meetings and to the Halton Hills Heritage Network group. I am
available for more speaking engagements and discussions on how to help your community
commemorate the Bicentennial. Let me know!

ONTARIO 7 The seven Provincial Regional Managers met in Penetanguishene in mid-June. It was an
excellent meeting where we were taken on a great tour of 1812 sites in the area, and got to
see the new Nancy Island Interpretive centre. We had several organizations present ideas
for the Bicentennial including the design for a
grave marker for 1812 veterans. Museums In Motion presented a concept for a travelling
exhibition on the war that would travel throughout Canada in a transport truck!
Mysteries 1812 is looking for unsolved stories of the war to be used as the basis for school
programs based on CSI type research. So let Adrienne know if you have any 1812 unsolved
mystery stories.

THE THRONE SPEECH On June 3, 2011, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General
of Canada, gave his speech from the Throne. He talks about the importance of marking the
Bicentennial for the War of 1812.
“Beyond our natural heritage, Canadians also cherish our shared history. Anniversaries are
an important part of how a society marks its collective progress and defines its goals for
the future. A key milestone next year will be
the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. We will remember how those of diverse backgrounds
and various regions came together to fight for Canada, ensuring the independent destiny of
our country in North America.”
Several milestones were mentioned in his speech, Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017,
Park Canada’s 100th anniversary in 2011, the War of 1812 Bicentennial, as well as the
Bicentennial of the Selkirk Settlement in 2012.

ROUTE 1812: SOUTH GRAND RIVER TRAIL The Grand River Conservation Authority
Heritage Working Group hosted a tour of the War of 1812 sites along the southern portion
of the Grand River on June 27, 2011. About 30 interested historians, tourism and culture
people boarded a school bus in Brantford and travelled along the Grand down to Cayuga,
seeing all the relevant 1812 sites along the way including an Archaeology site. We then
headed back up river on the other side,
through Six Nations to Mt. Pleasant. Coincidently, we met a CBC crew who spoke
to us about what we were doing so we got
some extra coverage!

ROUTE 1812 TRAIL The name Route 1812 is gaining popularity, as you may have noticed
it was used by the GRCA for their bus tour and the Southwestern
Ontario region will use it as a prefex to The Tecumseh Parkway, an 1812
driving historic trail in that area (it is the pink trail on the map). As such,
the trail is growing as we are able to connect the dots from one region to
the next. Route 1812 is a large loop now throughout Southern Ontario
including connecting the trails in the Niagara Region with sites in Grimbsy and to Battlefield House in Stoney Creek. It also travels through Halton Hills stopping at Fort York in Toronto.
We are in the process of ploting the historic sites on the trail and will next look at local
attractions including the Ontario Barn Quilt Trail.
HONOUR OUR 1812 HEROES A group of concerned Canadians is dedicated to: a) securing official recognition of the
Canadian military units that fought in the War of 1812; and b) perpetuating that
recognition through the award of Battle Honours to units of the Canadian Forces.
Their aim is to accomplish these objectives by June 18, 2012, the commencement of the
bicentennial commemoration of the War of 1812. Unlike the United Kingdom and the
United States, Canada has never officially recognized our 1812 military heritage in this
way. Achieving their two goals will redress this longstanding neglect and create
a lasting legacy that will make future
Canadians proud of their forbearers. Go to
their site; www.warof1812.ca/heroes for more information and how you can support
this initiative to recognize these forgotten acts of heroism.

There is much excitement about plans to display the Quilt of Belonging as part of the
Commemoration of the War of 1812 – 1814. At an Ontario Barn Quilt planning meeting in
Thamesville on May 30th, we were honoured to meet Shirley Baker, one of the creators of
the Delaware (Lenni Lenape) block in the Quilt of Belonging. Click Delaware (Lenni

BOOK NEWS STRANGE FATALITY WINS AWARDSWINS AWARDSWINS AWARDSWINS AWARDS
The Ontario Historical Society has announced that James Elliott’s Strange Fatality has won the 2010 J. J. Talman Award2010 J. J. Talman Award2010 J. J. Talman Award2010 J. J. Talman Award for the best book on Ontario’s
social, economic, political and cultural history. The judges’ citation reads in
part: “Well researched, well written and well illustrated, Strange Fatality
brings to life the Battle of Stoney Creek, one of the most decisive reversals of military fortune in the War of 1812 that, in no small measure, determined
the fate of the colony that would become the Province of Ontario.” For the full OHS press release, click here. (http://strangefatality.com/pdf/James-E-

Elliott has also won the non-fiction book prize in the 17th Annual Hamilton Literary Awards. The award was made November 15 by Arts Hamilton in a ceremony at Theatre Aquarius.
Elliott’s study of the Battle of Stoney Creek has been widely praised on both sides of the
border for showing how a largely-forgotten action in June 1813 changed the course of the war and quite likely saved the future province of Ontario. Elliott’s revelations on the neglect of
soldiers’ remains on the battlefield were instrumental in convincing municipal politicians to approve a major reinterment project set for 2011.
