The Situation:

After several attempts to increase enrollment and the amount of advisement sessions, the numbers at Snow College continued to drop. Meetings with advisers are crucial in higher education institutions — most importantly for student success, but also for enrollment and retention. Newly enrolled freshmen often fail to register for classes simply because they are overwhelmed or feel unsupported. The students who are most likely to complete their degrees feel connected with the campus and specifically with advisers. Students are also busier than ever as they constantly negotiate schedules with families, jobs, academics, and extracurriculars. Susan Larsen, Director of Academic Advising, discovered that many students struggled to fit an extra trip to campus in their schedules. So while the college needed advising to become more accessible, they were actually facing additional obstacles. It was at this point that the college began exploring options for online advising.

The Solution: Susan Larsen implemented Cranium Cafe and was ultimately impressed by “how easy it was to use” and she knew the importance of finding a FERPA-compliant solution. The college liked that it made advising more accessible to students without losing the benefits of an in-office appointment, so Cranium Cafe was soon implemented in the Academic Advising Department.

During the spring semester of 2015, Dr. Katy Evans taught two online English courses for Westminster College — a small liberal arts school in Salt Lake City — from her home in Massachusetts.In course A, Dr. Evans required that each student meet with her two times: the first about a third of the way into the semester, the second during the second-to-last week, when they were writing their final papers. In course B, students had the option to meet and discuss papers via Cafe or over the phone, but no students took her up on her offer.

On course B, Dr. Evans says: "I felt so out of touch with them. I don’t know what any of them looked like, I never talked to them, I didn't know if they were loving it or hating it, or what was happening or why. Then a bunch of people just stopped turning assignments in and responding to my emails. They just sort of slipped away and I had no way of pulling them back. My other class wasn't like that at all."

On course A, Dr Evans says: Everyone was really engaged on the discussion board, and whenever I talked with them in the Cafe and about their papers, they always talked about how appreciative they were of feeling like they were a part of a community.

"I felt like the teacher was here the whole time even though it's an online class."

The Situation:

In addition to working full time, Samantha is a freshman and a distance learner at The Community Colleges of Spokane. She was struggling in her logic course and felt she couldn’t get the help she needed. She frequently played phone tag with her professor to ask questions, and the responses via email just confused her further. Samantha continued to work harder, but without the ability to discuss homework assignments with her teacher, her grade kept dropping.

The Solution: Samantha discovered the “Cranium Cafe” tab within her Canvas Courses. After some experimenting, she quickly learned how to initiate face-to-face meetings and work on documents uploaded to the collaboration board.

Samantha is pleased to announce that she passed her class, and credits her success to Cranium Cafe. “I used it once a week with my professor,” she says. “Prior to the Cafe I had never seen her at all, and this is the closest I can get.” Together, they worked through the concepts and marked up her homework sheets by uploading them to the collaboration board.

“I wish more teachers used Cranium Cafe,” she says. “I could definitely use the help in my biology class… and math! The drawing board is really good for math.”

The Situation:How do you engage more than 600 degree-seeking students from a single distance learning office?How do you create effective communication between more than 7,000 enrolled online students with their advisors?

The Solution:

Cranium Cafe offers an in-office experience to off-campus students. The video and meeting collaboration software provides easy options for advising distance learners. The instant chat functionality allows enrolled and prospective students fast and easy communication with their staff. 

Cranium Cafe offers real-time advisement for prospective students in addition to degree seeking students. The Cranium Cafe team worked with Adams State to customize the interface to display on their website in an engaging way. Watts said this created “an aggressive form of marketing for students to use this feature.” After featuring the Cafe interface at the top of search results and their webpage, Adams State has seen amazing and effective results.
