Rangers poolers swamp Brightonby Warren Kozireski

Jared Kettinger and Max Wersinger each had first place finishes in two individual events and were part of two winning relay teams to lead 2-1 Spencerport to a 109-76 victory in boy’s swimming.

Kettinger finished first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:08.21 and the 100-yard butterfly in :56.50. Wersinger took the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyles with winning times of 1:54.34 and 5:09.24 respectively.

Both were part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team with Alex Gunther

and Jonah Bates in 1:36.03 and the 400-yard freestyle relay with Evan Napper and Matthew Kegler in 3:39.87.

Gunther also won the 50-yard freestyle in :24.88 and took second in diving. Ian Gillis touched first in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.55. The Rangers swept the top three spots in the backstroke with Zachary Nau and Eric Stein taking second and third.

The meet-opening 200-yard medley re-lay team of Gillis, Andrew Cole, Stein and Gunther won with a time of 1:57.31.

Diver Corey Neas of Brighton set a Spencerport pool record with a 6-dive score of 334.75.

Blue Devils’ Rockownets first career hat trickby Warren Kozireski

Junior forward Alec Rockow scored three goals over the final two periods and added an assist on what would prove to be the game-winning goal to pace Brockport to a 5-2 win over Churchville-Chili in Monroe County high school hockey.

Sophomore Andrew Harley opened the scoring with a power play goal at 6:26 of the first period. He took a pass from defen-seman Ben Leach and walked out in front from the right wing boards before putting a wrist shot into the net. Anthony Volpe also assisted on the play.

The Saints tied the game in the final minute of the first period as Connor Quinn skated down the right wing and found line-mate Zachary Olsen all alone in the slot. He deked around the goaltender and scored his second goal of the season.

Brockport took a 2-1 lead just 33 seconds into the second stanza. Patrick Viscardi sent the puck in deep to Mitchell Henshaw. He passed to Rockow open in the slot for his first goal of the game.

Churchville-Chili again fought back to tie the contest 2-2 at 8:23 of the period as

Tanner Metcalfe banged home the rebound from an Alan Brault shot for his first tally of the campaign.

But the Blue Devils took the lead for good as they converted on the power play at 10:34. Rockow passed to Leach and connected with Henshaw whose shot from inside the left faceoff circle found net for a 3-2 lead.

Rockow finished off his three-goal game with a pair of goals in the third. The first came at 8:29 on a rebound from his own shot and the second, again on the power play, came with just 48 seconds remaining with an assist from Henshaw, who regis-tered his 99th career point on the play.

“He’s scored five goals and without a doubt has been our hardest working player since day one,” Brockport head coach Greg Stahl said. “He has started the season on fire and that’s what happens when you go hard every shift.”

Saints goaltender Kyle Wood kept his team in the game with a stellar first period with ten saves, including many from point-blank range. He made 30 saves overall.

Brockport net-minder Riley Emmerson was credited with 14 saves in the win.

Gift ideas for the gardener on your list - including yourself!by Kristina Gabalski

I think gardeners are very easy people for whom to shop. In addition to being really awesome and friendly, gardeners always have a need for both practical items like garden tools and gloves, as well as extravagant items like garden hardscape materials, benches, statuary, even hoop or greenhouses.

If you are shopping this Christmas for a gardener or are looking to make up your own wish list, here are a few items to consider.

Gardening product and seed company websites serve as excellent places to search for new and innovative gardening items. I found several interesting items on the Burpee website (www.burpee.com), for example, including an herb and flower dry-ing rack kit, reasonably priced at $14.95. It looks great and is designed to hang inside your home where drying blooms and herbs can add a decorative touch and provide easy access when ready to use.

I always find myself looking for spots to hang and dry garden materials and this looks like an interesting and easy-to-use option. The hanging rack comes with hooks and twine for attaching plant material.

I’m sure I’m not alone in being in des-perate need of a kneeling pad for weeding chores. I feel embarrassed to say how old my garden kneeling pad is as well as some of the items I use to cushion my aging knees while working in the dirt.

There are a wide variety of very nice garden kneeling pads available out there and I know I would love to find a new one under the Christmas tree.

Burpee Seeds offers a wide selection of thoughtful gardening “kits” which include a Gardener’s Tool Time gift set for $39.95. It comes with a trowel and soil fork, a tool carry bag and plant markers. The Sunflow-er Super Success gift set comes to a little more at $58.95 and includes a trowel, fertil-izer and a garden hose. Burpee also offers a “Burpee’s Buddies” pet treat collection for $22.95 with oatgrass and wheatgrass seed for planting inside in a container and growing on your windowsill for the munch-ing pleasure of kitties and doggies.

I enjoy growing sprouts inside, espe-cially in the winter to add to salads and sandwiches. Most seed catalogs, including Harris Seeds, offer inexpensive sprouting dishes that make it easy to have a constant supply of fresh sprouts. Seed catalogs also sell a wide range of seeds for sprouting.

A nice camera can make a wonderful gift for a gardener. Photographing your garden is fun and can help you spot areas that are working and areas that need help or are in need of a change. Additionally, photographs can help you document to remember grow-ing seasons, especially if you combine the photos with a journal.

Finally, don’t forget about cookbooks. They serve as another great item for gar-deners who are always looking for new ways to prepare the fresh fruits and vegetables they grow. There are a wealth of books out there that focus on using fresh garden produce.

Vedge, for example, is a vegetarian cookbook from Philadelphia restaurateurs Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby. Included are vegetable dishes as well as desserts featuring fruit.

Cookbooks featuring fruits and vegetables are a wonderful holiday gift idea for gardeners. K. Gabalski photo.
