Yellow Belt Test

What I Need To Know For My

Answers the question... “What will be on my test?”

INTRO

YELLOW BELT = You are like a Taekwon-Do plant. Yellow symbolizes the soil from which you are

grounding yourself and getting your roots sunk in. At this level you have become more proficient at basic

blocks, strikes, stances, and kicks.

Journey Everybody learns at different speeds and everyone has their specialties. Some people are great at side kicks and others have super powerful punches. Taekwon-Do is a solo journey. It’s what you get out of it that matters not what others get out of it. So the other Yellow Belt can do 6 flips in the air while breaking 12 boards. Does that mean that you should be able to do that because you are a yellow belt? Of course not. This book is the guideline as to what I expect at your level and I assure you… do-ing 6 flips while breaking 12 boards is not a test require-ment. –Cheryl Cleveland

Pre-Form & Form 1

Hyung/Forms and Their Meanings

Form 1 = Chon-Ji - 19 moves - "Heaven and Earth", the beginning. Hence, the first form you learn when you be-gin your training.

Key Point

There are only 3 moves in this form: Low Block, Middle Punch to the stomach, and Inner forearm block. The first half of the form has only walking stances and the first half ends when you face the back of the room. The 2nd half has its middle blocks in L-Stances. Don’t forget the form ends with 2 punches forward and 2 punches backwards.

1 Steps The defender starts in Junbi Stance. The attacker lines up his right foot along the side of the defender’s left foot. The attacker steps his right foot back into a left foot forward walking stance. When the defender is ready he will dictate the level of the punch he wants and Kiyups. When Kiyup is given the attacker steps forward into a right walking stance and delivers the appropriate punch. The defender either steps back and blocks and counter attacks. (Variations can be stepping forward to block, stepping in at an angle and blocking, or dodging instead of blocking).

For your test you will have to do 6 one-steps. Try to do 2 low, 2 middle, and 2 high defenses. I’m looking for speed not complexity. Counter attacks can repeat so don’t be afraid to use a high punch multiple times. If you do can do a low block, mid block and high block with a high punch that counts as 3whole techniques.

Free Sparring Students perform a short round of non-contact sparring. Only kicks above the belt (not to the backside) and closed hand techniques are permitted. The higher the rank the closer I expect your attacks to be without touching. At this belt I expect a student to use both punches and kicks and maybe even block once or twice.

1. Know what Taekwon-Do means and know what each word means separately. Taekwon-Do is the art of Kicking and Punching.

Tae=Kick or smash with foot Kwon=Hand or Fist

Do=Art

2. What Country Is Taekwon-Do from? Korea

Always see the instructor at the begin-ning of your next class to see the results

of your test and what you can improve on!

You must break 1 Board with any technique. Please use different one from last test.

WHY DO WE BREAK BOARDS? It demonstrates in a visible way a student’s: power, focus, speed, balance and proper technique. It also helps you realize that your body itself is a very good weapon (that’s why self control is very important!)

Note from the author

Taekwon-Do has taught me to persevere through challenges, it has made my muscles flexible, it has made me stronger, it has given me health and days of energy, it has given my mind a place of meditation, it has been the beginning of many social re-lationships, it has taught me balance and speed, it has tested my limits and has rewarded me with confidence for conquering my limits. Through Taekwon-Do I have improved both my physical and mental health and have nourished a positive “I can” attitude. I hope to share my knowledge and love of this art to benefit as many people as possible. –Cheryl Cleveland "As human beings, we are capable of so much more than we know if only we are bold enough to face down our fear and say 'yes' to the challenge." -Hornsey

This book will help make your test go by easy. Please make sure you go through every page and understand what is being asked of you. If you have any questions about your test please see the instructor ahead of time (not 5 minutes before your test!).
