Problem Identified

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

There are more than 9.9 million migrants (living in Mumbai alone with no jobs) who cannot provide food for their family, especially infants and young, growing children [5]. These children are the future of our nation. The schools which provide mid- day meals have been shut down. Moreover, the Anganwadi workers who provided meals to these children from BoP families (who earn less than $2 a day) are unable to do so. What are the physical, mental and psychological impacts of this COVID19-induced lockdown on these children (BoP)? What can be done to ensure provision of food (for children and their mothers) and mental stress- management for this affected population of the migrant workers?

Problem IdentifiedWHY IS IT AN URGENT PROBLEM?

1. Hunger is the main problem for the migrant workers since they have no source of income and have children to feed.

2. The children are confined in a limited space, and they are not allowed to socialise and participate in leisure activities. Hence, their mental and psychological stress would increase. This stress can affects their mothers too.

3. Since they have no source of income, the well being of the family is compromised.

Explorations

ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS

1. The families living in the BoP segment can

be provided with cooked food and fruits for

a whole day. A toy will also be provided to

the kids to play with. There will be board

games like ludo or snake and ladder-which

can be played by the whole family.

2. The families who belong to BoP and lower

middle class will be provided with

ready-to-cook food items and fresh fruits.

They will only need to add hot water to the

packets and it cooks up a delicious meal.

SolutionThe word ‘Shishu Annapurna’ means “Food and overall well-being of the Children” in Sanskrit. Shishu Annapurna provides help to the children in the BoP and helps them to reduce physical, emotional as well as mental stress. This solution nurtures them with healthy meals and provides a toy for them to play with.. This also reduces the stress of the mother regarding the provision of food. The world has around 2.7 billion people in the BoP segment that is 37% of the global population[17]. During times like a global pandemic or Natural disasters, this can be used as a relief for the people and the children living in the BoP segment.

Solution

The box includes a fruit, a packet of milk and 2 food items along with a toy. The box also include wooden cutlery like spoons and forks. The toys will be made by traditional local artisans who make Channapatna dolls, Kondapalli toys, and the like. The box also include DIY toys and paper toys which are sustainable and non-toxic.[21] Additionally, this box also includes some nutrition for the mother. The quantities have been measured according to the needs of the children. The milk packets will be packaged in Tetrapacks which are leakproof and sustainable. The other food items will be wrapped in banana leaf or any other locally-sourced natural packaging material available in the region. A set of masks is also provided to fight the infection of COVID19.

Alternative Solution:Rural Scenario

There will also be a box which will have dry, uncooked ingredients for the children living in the rural parts of the country. This box will contain dry, uncooked rice and dal, packet of oil, salt, sugar, masala, a packet of milk, a set of spoon and fork and a toy. The dry food will be packaged in paper bags. This will also allow the mother to cook meals according to family’s taste. Moreover, the food will not get spoilt.

Solution

The meals will differ according to the age group of the child. The meal plan is set according to child’s need. For the children and the mothers who live in the rural areas, they will be provided with the staple dal and rice using which they can create various dishes according to their taste.

Solution

Shishu Annapurna is promoting sustainability as well as helping and promoting the local artisans. This also promotes PM Modi’s “Be vocal about local”. This project would be a PPP and will partner with Governments, NGOs, UN and will also use crowdfunding. Furthermore, people can also donate meals on the website and the app. This will also work on commercial basis for the people who wish to buy it for the children.

User Experience

The website and the app works as a platform for the people who are stuck at home, yet want to help the worst affected. This would be a channel through which we will receive the funds through crowdfunding.

India is projected to hit 401m+ smartphone users in 2020 [26.1]. The app can be used by the people who would like to have this kit. They can either simply call us through the website or the app using a toll free number.

Process

The design process followed by our team was:

1. Empathy

2. Group Brainstorming

3. TRIZ based morphological analysis

Page 22: What if we are in a lockdown situation for more than a ... · Mumbai alone with no jobs) who cannot provide food for their family, especially infants and young, growing children [5]

Process

Empathy

After the nationwide lockdown was announced in India by Prime Minister Modi, the migrant workers who live on daily wages immediately lost their jobs. Stuck in an alien city with no source of income was scary. With no public transportation, the migrants started walking back to their home states. When the news reporters asked Why are they walking back so far to their hometown?, they said even though we have a roof over our head, we have neither money nor food to feed our family.

Page 23: What if we are in a lockdown situation for more than a ... · Mumbai alone with no jobs) who cannot provide food for their family, especially infants and young, growing children [5]

Process

Group Brainstorming

The team came up with a few ideas first which

we pitched to our mentor. We discussed and

merged few of those ideas and came up with a

few solutions. The idea we came up with was to

design something for the BoP segment, the

migrant workers who have been affected the

most during the pandemic. We had articles

about how they were suffering without food and

shelter and also how many of them were dying.

Page 24: What if we are in a lockdown situation for more than a ... · Mumbai alone with no jobs) who cannot provide food for their family, especially infants and young, growing children [5]

Process

TRIZ on based morphological analysisWhen we decide that we are working on

design for BoP, our mentor suggested we

use TRIZ. We created a table and noted

down the user base, type of food we could

provide, the economic status, the cost price

of the whole package, the life cycle/how

long the product will last and where it will be

produced. We have added dots to the

criteria which we will be using in our design

using colour codes. D1 is the idea/solution

we will be taking forward.

Impact

“When the mother is happy, Family is happy. When Family is happy, Nation is happy” ~Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

This quote by Dr Kalam is indeed very true. When a child is born, the mother makes sure that her baby is safe and is taken care of accordingly. When she sees the child happy, it gives her immense joy and also the family is happy. Even the smallest achievements of her children cheers her up. The true joy of a mother is to see her children content and achieve all the successes in life. When one child is happy, the entire family is happy and when many children are happy, the entire nation is happy and these happy children are the future of our nation.

Execution & Viability

This box has perishable goods as well as non-perishable goods and these two will be sourced from 2 different places. The sourcing of raw material for the perishable goods will done through wholesale markets.. The meals will be cooked and packaged at the community kitchens. The toy will be sourced from local toy artists. The whole box will be put together at a warehouse where the packaged food and the procured toys will be delivered through tempos. They will go through quality checks. These box will be distributed through volunteers and Anganwadi workers to the children living in BoP. They can also be delivered by the delivery partners like Zomato and Swiggy to people’s houses.

Start

Page 27: What if we are in a lockdown situation for more than a ... · Mumbai alone with no jobs) who cannot provide food for their family, especially infants and young, growing children [5]

Execution & Viability

When this is scaled throughout the country or globally, the menu will be created according to the local tastes ad cuisine as well as the local crops grown in the region. This becomes sustainable as well as cost efficient-both to produce food and package it.

Execution & Viability

This will be under a PPP model where government and other non-profit organizations would be helping us financially. We will also be using crowding funding on our website and application, where people can donate for meals and pay how much ever they like to. These boxes can also be bought by people of the middle class and higher middle class. All the data regarding the project and the supply chain will be stored in a data cloud system (AWS). The partners for this project will be able to see how everything is working through a login access provided to them. These will also be used by volunteers to review the smooth running of this supply chain.
