What is Compass House?

Compass House is a membership-based community for

individuals who experience persistent mental ill-

ness. Compass House is designed after the Clubhousemodel which is a proven approach for rehabilitation,

recovery and reintegration in to the community. The

federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services

Administration (SAMHSA) lists it on its National Reg-

istry of Evidenced-Based Programs and Practices.

Since the first clubhouse opened in 1948, they have

been successfully implemented in more than 333 com-

munities across 33 countries, serving close to 100,000

people a year. Compass House is part of an inter-

national community of clubhouses through our partner-

ship with Clubhouse International.

Clubhouses Change Lives Community Benefits

Clubhouses serve their members and provide tangible

benefits to the wider community. This recovery based

model of care has enabled people with mental illness

to avoid expensive hospital visits and stay off the

street and out of prison.

Compass House expects to achieve the same positiveresults attained by other Clubhouse International club-

Compass House complements and collaborateswith the county’s existing mental health system. Itwill provide a supportive place where people with amental illness can voluntarily go on a daily basis foras long as they wish at no cost to the member ortheir family. Compass House will create an environment in which people with mental illness canrebuild hope, self respect, and their lives.

Reduced hospitalization: Studies indicate that mem-bership in a clubhouse reduced the number of hospi-talizations by one third and the average number of

hospital days per year by 70%, resulting in considera-

ble savings to the community.

I’m Jill Redelf. I love the Compass House. It gets me out to do stuff so I won’t be so depressed, and I like working around the people there. I used to go to the Hawthorne Center but it closed, and thank God it did, because now we have Compass House and I like it better. You can volunteer to do what you want to do, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to, and everything is up to the members. I get to be more of a help in things. My favorite things so far at Compass House are working in the kitchen, answering phones, and recreation activities. The people are really neat to be around, and I try to work with all of them. My goal is to learn how to read and get better at it. People at Compass House give me reading lessons, plus I get to help write the lunch menu, and help write articles for the newsletter.Before the clubhouse opened, I was staying home all the time and not going anywhere. I am good with people, and I like having a lot of friends. So now, I’m getting out, doing more, and I’m happier.
